Caleb is the baby of the family which has left him free of the strict family expectations that have been placed on his older siblings. Part of him knows he should be striving so for some kind of "success", but no one has told him exactly what that means so he has decided to ignore that for now. Instead he likes to do things his own way and follow his impulses, regardless of what anyone around him says, especially his sister. For most of his life Caleb has been left to his own devices, and while that has made him creative it has also lead to some less than ideal social skills as well as a habit for sneaking out. He is desperate to make friends and talk to anyone he can, but he can sometimes push too hard and not know how to read when someone is not feeling the same way. He wants people to want to be around him as much as he wants to be around people. Caleb also loves to be in charge and have people listen to him, and he will try and claim things as his own idea as often as he can get away with.

The Thorne family comes from a prominent line of witches and wizards, with old money and a lot of connections back home in London. But after his father made some bad business decisions they were forced to leave England and start a new life New Zealand if they wanted to keep even a shred of their family's reputation in tact. Caleb was only eight years old at the time and was protected from some of the uglier reasons for their move. He spent most of his childhood being raised by nannies while his parents took a very hands off approach. After the move the nannies were gone but his parent's were as distant as ever, and his father started traveling more and more for work. Caleb is slightly closer to his mother, only because she is home with him more often while his father has become more of a presence than a person in his mind, and whether he is there or not has very little affect on Caleb' day to day life. When she is around Delilah, his older sister, tires to give him some structure but he quickly considered her a nag and no fun, and tends to avoid her when she gets like that. His brother, Simon, on the other hand treats him as little more than a pest so he quickly gave up on trying to have a relationship with him.
