Open Y43 Start of Year Feast

Seamus had been glad that he'd decided to not work over the break, working was hard and boring, and there was no way that he wanted to do it. The teen had experienced it once, and he'd wait until he was graduated before he even got close to bothering with it again. The Slytherin was sat at the slytherin table, waiting for all the usual stuff to be over so that he could eat and then leave. He was determined he'd make the Slytherin quidditch team this year, so he would work harder than before to get it. Nothing was going to stand in his way this time. The slytherin sighed in relief when the food finally appeared and he was able to just dig in.

Rosie was happy to be back at school. She had so many plans for this year, all of which were mostly centred around herbology and being the co-leader of the wild patch. She had dubbed herself the princess of flowers, learning from the older yearbooks that, typically those leading the WPC, went with royal titles. Rosie loved the idea of being the princess of flowers, to protect and look after all that grew in the kingdom of the wild patch. Rosie was of course working with someone else, and Rosie was pretty eager to get to know her a little more than she had previously. The gryffindor was excitedly sitting with her sister as people got sorted. She cheered for them, but was mostly focused on what was on her mind. Rosie didn't even realize how quickly it all went until the food suddenly appeared. She spotted Abby and gave her a little wave. "Hey Abby, how was the rest of your break?" she asked.

Emmanuel was feeling a little conflicted. He wanted to focus all of his energy upon his club and doing well in history, but his mother's family had reminded him over the break that he was a pureblood. To them this meant that he should be achieving, or aiming to achieve, way more than he was. The teen was a little disappointed that they didn't take his success on the merit they were and were looking for him to do more. But he knew they were right too, he had to try better. Had to aim higher and be better. The Ravenclaw watched the other kids get sorted and was glad when the headmaster only spoke briefly. This was usually a very long day.

Savannah welcomed returning to school. Being at home was just…well, it was better to be at school. She was looking forward to her nice bed in the dorm, and not being woken up at all hours by her parents partying. She didn't understand why they thought they could party when they needed to get out and get jobs. But it didn't matter, she was at school and whatever rubbish they did outside of it didn't bother her. The ravenclaw had brought a book to the sorting/start of year feast. She had it carefully hidden so that she could read it without being caught. Savannah barely glanced up from it as food arrived, she mindlessly put some stuff on her plate and went back to reading.

Gregory did not want to be at school. he had begged his dad to let him stay home, let him just go to muggle school, go to the muggle school on the island and just let him be done with magic, but clearly as he sat amongst his peers at the magical school he had not won. he was still tightly clutching the shell which he'd gotten from Conan on the train, but that conversation hadn't made him feel much better, he was just stuck, stuck at this school. He hoped Cassius wouldn't bother him this year, but he knew his luck. Gregory took some food, but was intending to eat quickly and see if he couldn't hide himself out of the way of everyone else.

Fraser was really happy to be sorted into Gryffindor. He had been hoping for Hufflepuff a little like his brother and dad had both been, but in reality he had and would've been pleased with anywhere, because there was only one thing on his mind and that was quidditch. He could spot where a few of his friends, the folk he'd met before being sorted at school. Fraser couldn't decide what item of food he wanted first, it all seemed just so delicious.

Rion could still hang out with Ruby, this was true. And she totally would, just as soon as she could bring herself to speak to her again. Being separated from your twin brother was indisputably much worse. "They split you up from your twin? Rude," she said, half-rising to her feet to look over the candelabra. "You should write to your lawyer. I'm going to write to mine - where's the cheese?!" What kind of banquet was it without a cheese platter? Not a sliver of edam in sight!

As she sat back down, she stretched for the beans and gravy and set them on the table within Ralph's reach. "I have a sister in Hufflepuff. Can I please have the pumpkin juice? We're nothing like each other." Maybe it was for the best Rion hadn't made it into her sister's house; the only thing worse than being called a nerd was being known simply as 'Ainmere's little sister'. "I'm from England. What about you?"

Elara couldn't believe this was the last sorting ceremony she'd sit through. It felt like only a few days ago that she had been sorted into Gryffindor, embarking on a totally new adventure. Now, she was sitting with her friends and boyfriend at their house table, watching a bunch of infants join the castle brood. It was wild to think about, and she mainly wanted to get on with the food as the headmaster droned on. As she finished, she snickered and gave a little whisper. "Maybe we should do a quick hike into the forest this year just for fun," she whispered to Zay. It was kind of joke, as she'd never been there, but she also knew that there were definitely dangerous things in there, especially after the debacle a few years ago. The castle wasn't even necessarily safe.

Moving in her seat, she saw Veronique sitting at the Hufflepuff table and avoided making eye contact. She didn't have ill feelings towards her cousin necessarily, but there was just something about her presence that made Elara want to run. Maybe it was because Veronique was always trying to be in her business, but she was at her wits end. Why did her aunt let her come back to this school? Thankfully, she only had to do one year, and she had plenty more to focus on.

Indi was still getting used to the head girl badge on her robes and she had to fight the feeling that everyone was looking at her because of it. She had been so excited when she had gotten it but now that she was back at school she found it hard to completely ignore the imposter syndrome that lingered in the back of her mind. She hadn't been a prefect but she had been chosen anyways. She could count all the reasons she deserved it and apparently others did too, but the feeling lingered. The sorting ceremony had dragged on like usual and she was eager to eat. It had been a long day already and now she had to help heard the first years to the dorms. Was it too late to give the badge back? Indi sighed but at least the food was finally served. She glanced over at Natalia and noticed her sour looking roommate seemed even more down than usual. "What happened to you?" she asked. "Did they not make your favorite?" she teased lightly. Their hostile relationship had cooled over the past few years and who knew, maybe they could even spend their last year as friends. @Natalia Novak

Caleb's stomach hurt. The train ride back to school had started off so well but took a sharp turn towards awful. Why did Rene have such awful timing? Why did Louis have to open his big mouth? A million questions ran through his head and he was tempted to slam it against the table to make them all stop. The sorting ceremony nearly distracted him enough to forget his problems but now it was over and he was waiting for the feast to begin. He wasn't even hungry even though he had been looking forward to this meal for months. Deep down he knew Louis wasn't going to offer him any kind of grand romance but at least when things were unsaid he could pretend he wasn't just wasting his time. No matter how fun it was for now. He wasn't sure what he was going to do now. When the meal appeared he just went through the motions of serving himself and just picked at his food.

It was weird, watching the ceremony from the tables this years instead of all being gathered in a nervous gaggle like they had last year. Raafe amused himself as it went on, trying to guess who was going to get in what house based off the first years' faces and body language alone. He wasn't overly successful, but it was pretty fun. The nervous ones did seem to end up in Hufflepuff at least.

As the ceremony ended as the feast was due to begin, Raafe was half-expecting Professor Alcott-Ward to mention the new head students, nudging Anisha and getting ready with a knowing look to send Indi's way the second her name was called, though it was mostly wasted and he just ended up staring at the side of her head as she started talking to someone else at the Slytherin table instead.

Shrugging, Raafe adjusted his glasses and turned to the food that had appeared, noticing one of the new first years staring at it, apparently spoilt for choice. "Oh, I remember you from the ceremony. I knew you'd be in Gryffindor. You have a very Gryffindor nose," Raafe informed him, reaching past the boy to scoop up some potatoes. @Fraser Fergusson

Felix felt weird. He kept fighting the urge to to look for Sawyer and Theia in the crowd even though he knew they wouldn't be there. The last time it was just him and Thistle somewhere it was before he had even come to Hogwarts and that had been totally different because they were home with dad. Now he was the oldest of his siblings at school and it felt like the world was slightly off it's axis and no one around him seemed to notice. Not to mention the prefect badge on his robes that seemed to push him even farther off balance. Nothing felt right this year except for Thistle's still green hair and when he managed to catch Molly's eye and smile at her. Maybe this was all in his head and it would be a fine year? A great year even! He tried to accept his own internal peep talk as the food finally appeared and he piled his plate high. He just needed to pretend like everything was fine and maybe it would be.

Margo usually felt lonely during feasts since she could never sit with her friends. She wasn't sure if it was going to be better or worse with Isadora gone. But as she reflexively scanned the Gryffindor table for her she realized it was much much worse. She bit her lip and stared down at her empty plate as the sorting ceremony finished and the headmaster said a few words. Margo had been sure she had cried all the tears she could possibly shed over the break but being here was so much harder than she had expected. Deep down she knew her friend was fine at Durmstang but it wasn't like she had a good record of dealing with people she cared about leaving her. She tried to be strong like she had been on the train. But in that moment all of her bravado was gone. Maybe it would be back in the morning but for now she sat with her feelings and slowly picked at her dinner.

Dorian understood he couldn't have skipped the start of year feast last year, considering sorting and all, but after going through it himself he could definitely confirm it would be better if the whole thing were optional once you were past your first year. Or better yet, have them do sorting somewhere private instead of under the invasive gaze of the entire school.

Deciding to give the new first years a bit more privacy than anyone had likely afforded him, Dorian stared into the middle distance, aware he was scowling but not bothered enough to change it. It was hard to fully zone out however, not with Conan nearby shuffling with something in some box like a niffler with a galleon. "What's in there that's so bloody interesting," he griped, grumpy and tired enough not to mind his manners as he noticed Conan was still holding onto the box even as he began to eat. @Conan Burke

Ethan felt like he was used to the whole school thing by now. He liked watching the sorting ceremony and seeing all the new kids filing in. It wasn't even that long ago but it was still hard for him to imagine he was ever that lost looking but he knew he probably was. All he knew for sure was that he was excited to finally get to pick his classes, and more than anything he was excited for Care of Magical Creatures. He had been dying to take that class since he learned he was magical and would be going to wizard school. It felt like things were finally paying off and having to leave his mom behind was almost worth it. Almost. He hadn't heard from her all break and he wanted to believe it was because she was busy but it still left him feeling uneasy. At least he had a good school year to look forward to.

Leah had been counting down the days till she got to come back to Hogwarts. As expected most of her holiday had been spent bouncing around between different family events and her parent's houses. It felt like she hadn't been able to stay in one place for more than a couple weeks at a time and she was ready for some stability. Even with several roommates she was sure she would sleep better at school than in all the unfamiliar beds she'd spent the night in over the break. She smiled at all the first years who had joined the Gryffindor table and she was eager to get to know them all and welcome them. She listened as the headmaster gave them another welcome and just like that the feast appeared and she served herself quickly, knowing just how hungry her house tended to be.

Marnie knew she should be paying attention to the feast and the sorting ceremony, and she was, clapping loudly and letting out a few hoots every time she heard "Hufflepuff" (and nearly cheering by mistake when Professor Alcott-Ward introduced Professor Carter), but really all she wanted to do right now was stare at Felix Carnahan.

She'd seen him around school plenty the previous years, sure, talked to him some too since he was on the team and she was easily the team's number one fan since Penny had joined, but there was something different about him this year. Besides the prefect badge.

She cleared her throat, mouth already opening as she searched for an ice breaker. "Hey Felix, I like your hair this year I mean I loved the green last year you remember when you helped me paint my hair yellow last year it was kinda like that but yours was green but I mean you look good with black hair too though I was kind of curious if you'd keep it or maybe pick a new colour have you considered yellow I still have some of the coloured hair spray if you wanna try it out sometime!" Marnie said in a rush, nearly dipping her elbow in tomato sauce she proped it on the table to lean a little closer to Felix. @Felix Carnahan

Gryffindor. Great. Santiago wasn't sure how he had ended up in the house that was apparently for the 'brave'. What a joke. He wasn't brave. If he was he would have stood up to his parents and insisted he go to his regular school. But he wasn't and now he was here, but he guessed it was better than his other options. He kept thinking about what the hat had said and how it had called him out for being from far away. What did that even mean? Surely he couldn't be the only one not from this country. New Zealand wasn't very big. Was it racist? He shook his head. It was a hat. Santiago didn't bother to pay attention to the headmaster, just like before. He doubted anything he said was that important. But at least when he was done talking this time, food appeared and he realized just how hungry he was. He served himself and had to admit the food was pretty good. So maybe it wouldn't be like prison after all.

Aine stared glumly at the food in front of her. She picked at a couple of potatoes, but felt that she was lacking in appetite. All it had taken was one comment from an aunt to throw her off - 'geez, Aine, boarding school's given you a bit of extra weight,' - and now she kept dwelling on her appearance. It was stupid, but combined with the fear of being seen as weird for her academic achievement, she couldn't help but feel anxious. She had clapped politely for each Hufflepuff, and would've chatted to Margo some more but worried she'd annoyed her roommate, and figured she needed some space too. She shook her head, putting on a polite smile at the people around her. There were reasons to be optimistic. New year, new Aine. Again. Hell take her if she was going to have peaked at fourteen.

Renata felt a little shy about the new badge on her robes, but she wore it with pride. It was funny to think about how far she'd already come, from a scared and bullied little girl at Durmstrang, spending some time at Hogwarts feeling a little overwhelmed and lost. But things were really starting to come together, she thought, catching Eugene's eyes a few times and unable to stop a smile from lingering on her lips. Not that she could get ahead of herself, but she felt very excited to be back at school. OWLs made her feel a bit nervous, but aside from that she was motivated to do her best this year. With each new Hufflepuff, she loudly cheered and applauded, making sure to give a big smile to each student who joined them at their table. They'd come so close to winning the house cup last year, she wanted to put in an effort to help them get there this year. Looking around, she noticed Margo looking a little less than enthusiastic and leaned over to her, not wanting to make a big deal but wanting to check on the younger girl. Even if they weren't necessarily going to be paired up in Heta Omega again it felt like a nice thing to do. "Hey, Margo, everything alright? Long trip today, yes?" she offered, giving a sympathetic smile.

@Margo Fox

So, Oz had been sorted into Hufflepuff, he guessed. Whatever that meant. From what little of the song he'd bothered to pay attention to it was the house filled with friendly people, or, you know, the everyone else house. He sighed quietly to himself, loading up his plate with as much food as he could handle (or more accurately, more than he could actually handle). There were so many kids he was a little intimidated, but on the other hand, perhaps that was for the best. Now he could easily blend into the crowd and just be a normal kid, just like everyone else. Maybe he'd meet people to go exploring with, but he wanted to wait and assess them first. He couldn't bear the thought of having people be overly concerned or falsely kind. Pity was the worst possible outcome.

Isaiah grinned when Elara whispered to him. Honestly, he didn't even think it was that bad of an idea. Even if she did sound like she was joking. He had been to the forest before but the last time he went wasn't one he particularly liked to think about. "Maybe we should." He replied when the Headmaster had finished his speech. At least now he didn't have to whisper. "I mean I don't think Wes or Jordie would be up for joining me with those badges they're sporting." Zay added jokingly. He was proud of his friends, both of them, but he had to admit he had been wondering what it would mean for all of the plans he had made for this year. @Elara Chatelain

Fraser glanced at the boy that started speaking to him. He reached up and touched his nose before laughing lightly. "That's funny, my dad was a hufflepuff," he said, thinking that genetically it meant he might not actually have it. "I'm Fraser!" he greeted holding out his hand to the boy.

Cameron's shoulders were practically at his ears as he hunched at the table, trying his best to block out the rest of the feast and the students around him. If he thought he'd been mad at Isadora for leaving over the break it was nothing compared to actually being back at school without her. It was so unfair, he only had a handful of friends he could tolerate here to begin with and then she had to up and leave them. Maybe he should just replace her, he already had a Gryffindor friend like Abigail, he didn't need two, he thought viciously as his eyes tracked the Gryffindor table, as if he could see the empty space Isadora would have left.

Ready to get out of the hall as soon as possible, Cameron practically attacked his food when it appeared, shoving it into his mouth so he could hopefully finish quick enough to dodge any annoying first years or prefects and get back to the common room early.

Gwen had taken a seat at the Slytherin table without paying close attention to who she was sitting next to, which had been a mistake. She frowned slightly as she watched that weird little guy from Accio sit at the table and glare over at the Gryffindor table as if it hurt him. Gwen wished she had looked for anyone cooler to sit with and talk to. She saw Seamus a few seats away and shot him a smile, he hadn’t been the worst train companion.

But Cameron got her attention again when he started stabbing at his food as if it was still alive and he was trying to kill it. Gwen wrinkled her nose in disgust. “Why are you behaving like a caveman?” She asked him, giving him a look.

@Cameron Roswell
