PERSONALITY

Kas tends to interact with others by shielding himself with humor. Commonly responding with sarcasm as a way to distance himself, Kas can often come across aloof or outright caustic to those as he is rarely willing to act with true sincerity to those he’s not very close with.
While at odds with his family and isolated by his upbringing, Kas still undoubtedly comes from a place of privilege and doesn’t always understand what it might mean for those around him to not have easy access to money, magic, or other resources he takes for granted. He generally finds he is able to rebel against the things he disagrees with because he faces very little actual risk to his well-being.
He’s quite concerned with his appearance, spending a lot of his time and energy making sure he’s portraying just the right amount of put together aloofness, a persona that also helps him keep his distance from other people. Kas is very good at keeping his cool and adapting to his surroundings or social situations and it takes a lot to truly get under his skin and make him break his facade.

FAMILY + HISTORY
The Safir family has always been tied to snakes, it was a connection dating back generations. Snakes on their family crest, snakes in their portraits, snakes in their house. The connection was so strong even international customs laws had not stopped Kas’s family from smuggling in a few when they had arrived in New Zealand from Egypt, the offspring of which are displayed proudly around the house. When Kas began to display parselmouth abilities as a child, his parents were overjoyed. Unfortunately, like all things his parents value, Kas’ parselmouth skills are something he makes an effort to downplay. Kas grew up feeling like his parents had already planned out his whole life for him. In the face of all the pressure from his family, Kas intentionally distances himself from their goals and often reacts apathetically or counterproductively towards their plans for him.
While not pure blood on paper, Kas’ family is still very intent on status and prestige in the wizarding community, and while they have no archival proof, the Safir’s claimed pure blood status until about 5 generations ago, when Kas’ great-great-grandfather fell in love with a muggleborn. In order to escape the disgrace, they immigrated to New Zealand, a small isolated wizarding community, in an attempt to start fresh and save face. As his parent’s only son and now the 4th generation mixed-blood, Kas grew up with a lot of pressure and expectations of carrying on his family's legacy, something Kas does not care for one bit.
Kas fought hard to step as far away from his family expectations while at Hogwarts New Zealand; being sorted into Hufflepuff, befriending muggleborns, and succeeding in being an all round mediocre student, only ever excelling in Care of Magical creatures. While Kas worked hard as part of Accio! and made a few lifetime friends in the likes of Connor Holland, Freya Song, and Lysander Summers, his tenure at Hogwarts was undoubtedly overshadowed in an incident in his 7th year where he was involved in the creation of a Basilisk. This incident resulted in immediate expulsion from school right before Kas was due to graduate and has left Kas with a permanent black mark on his record, only narrowly avoiding more serious charges after his Wizengamot Hearing sentenced him to probation and community service.
After his trial in 2056, Kas wasted no time in leaving his family home once his house arrest was lifted, moving in with the Summers' family, grateful for their support throughout all this, and committing himself to working hard at the Menagerie in return.
