Santiago is full of contradictions. He is an incredibly loyal friend and would take any secret entrusted to him to the grave. But he is incredibly slow to open up to others and is reluctant to put that kind of trust into others. He is perfectly content to spend most of his time alone doing the things he likes. But he also longs for companionship and easily feels left out. He is stubborn when told what to do but would gladly do something kinds without being asked.
Growing up around horses and unicorns have given him a love and respect for the animals, although he was never allowed around the unicorns. Instead he spent most summers of his life caring for the horses and riding all around his families property. As the only grandchild on both sides of his family he spent a lot of time on his own and picked up the guitar at a young age and has been teaching himself ever since. He also picked up skateboarding when he started muggle school and started to make friends who liked to skate. Recently he's shown an interest in graffiti art much to his parent's displeasure.

Santiago's parents met briefly when they were barely twenty-one and after their chance encounter they found themselves expecting a baby. It was an unexpected surprise but not an unwelcome one and they decided that they would do what was best for their son and co-parent as cordially as they could. Santiago spent most of his early childhood with his mother in Texas, west of San Antonio, on her family's horse and unicorn ranch. But as he got older it made more sense for him to live with his father in Arizona during the school year and spend his summers and holidays with his mother instead.
By all accounts Santiago had a great childhood with both sides of his family loving him and supporting him the best they could. But that didn't stop Santiago from resenting his parents for making him split his time between them. He hated having to go back and forth and not having a place to really call his home. He firmly believes that if they get along so well as his parents why couldn't they try and be a real family for him especially since neither of his parents have dated much over the years.
During the school year Santiago spends most of his time with his dad's family, either at his grandparent's house, his dad's mechanic shop, or with any one of his other uncles. While they all care for him, he still feels like he as a burden at times when he gets passed from one family member to another, and he ends up longing for the consistency he has with his mom. Yet when he's with her on the ranch he feels isolated despite his family and all the creatures to spend time with, and just ends up wanting to be back with his school friends and his dad.
As he has gotten older he has started to act out a bit more in class and outside of school as a way to vent his frustrations. Santiago regularly talks back to his teachers and will sometimes even shoplifts a candy bar from a convince store when he's skating with his friends. It all came to a head when he got caught red handed, literally, spray painting the side of his dad's garage after hours. With the beginning of his magical education on the horizon his parent's decided a total change of scenery might do him some good and that he would attend Hogwarts New Zealand despite his entire family having graduated from Illvermorny.
