Open SDA Event S1 - Defensive Devices

Juniper was feeling rather confident this year after her club promotion. This had to prove she was better than Lysander, right? She made her way into the chamber, getting everything set up so when Syndey arrived, she would hopefully be impressed. They would be going over some magical defense devices, seeing as sometimes, they could be pretty helpful, even if you had a wand. Or especially when you didn't. Once Sydney came in, she gave her a big smile and then waited as students arrived to the event.

"Hi everyone, and thanks for coming to our first event for the year! I'm Juniper Zumwalt, one of your co-leaders this year, and today, we're going to talk about some practical things that could benefit you outside school. Or I suppose inside if you really had a reason," she smirked, going to pick up a long golden stick. "This right here is one of the Dark Detectors we'll be talking about today, and some of you might have seen it before if you got in trouble with the wrong staff member. It's a Probity Probe, and you can wave it in front of someone to see if they're hiding any objects that have magic or are using certain concealment spells."

Juniper placed the stick down and pick up a mirror, trying not to stare into it at this moment, as she had already gotten an idea of some people who would appear. "This is pretty helpful for personal use in my opinion. It's a Foe-Glass, and if you look into it, you can see your enemies. The closer they are to you, the more shapely and detailed they'll appear. Could help if you're trying to watch your back." She placed the mirror down and passed the attention over to Sydney.

[Sydney Townsend]

Sydney had been looking to run the club solo after Tyler had graduated, but the more she'd thought about it, the more she'd wanted to be sure she was leaving the SDA in good hands. Juniper had seemed like an easy choice to take over and so far Sydney had few complaints about her co-president, especially considering it meant she could trust her to do things like set up for a club meeting without worrying Juniper was going to ruin it all.

Sydney had been doing more and more research into things like Dark Detectors lately, if only for her own peace of mind, but she figured it was an important set of tools for all their club members to at least be aware of. She nodded as Juniper greeted the club and began covering some of the items they had for today, stepping forward once Juniper had finished. "It's important to understand that defending yourself doesn't just mean learning how to cast shield charms and hexes. You can arm yourself in a number of different ways, including by utilizing items like these," Sydney said, motioning to both the items Juniper had covered and the two she had with her.

"This is a sneakoscope. It's probably the easiest of our Dark Detectors to come by, I recommend picking one up from Dervish and Bang's next Brightstone weekend," Sydney began, holding up the object, which looked fairly similar to a small glass spinning top. "It will start to spin and whistle, lighting up when someone nearby is doing something untrustworthy. I highly recommend keeping one in your dorm especially if you have untrustworthy roommates," she said, setting the sneakoscope aside. "And last, is the Secrecy Sensor," Sydney said, holding up the long, gold aerial shaped object, "It will vibrate when it detects that someone is concealing or lying about something," Sydney said, noting that the the secrecy sensor was already vibrating and wondering who in the club was hiding something. It could be anyone. "We have a few of these dark detectors here in the club for you today, so feel free to pick them up, test them out, test out lying near them, and look into investing in your own," Sydney said, setting the sensor aside and stepping back so the club could get a look.

[Lysander Summers]

Lysander half expected to be barred from this term's meeting. Sydney already wasn't his biggest fan, and now with Juniper helping her to lead, he hadn't liked his chances. Nevermind that he dungbombed their party the year before. He stepped in, and when it seemed like no one was yelling at him to get out, he grinned to himself and joined everyone else. This might not be so bad. The Gryffindor rolled his eyes when Juniper took the lead in the meeting, and audibly fake-coughed a few times through her explanation of the items to interrupt. Despite that, the dark detectors they were showing off were actually pretty cool, and he wondered about getting some of his own. A sneakoscope was a good idea, though he had no reason to distrust his dormmates. He was pretty sure that Fuzzfeathers would have nipped their fingers if they did try to go through his things. When they finished talking, Lysander stepped up to get a better look at the foe-glass. "Don't think I need one of these to see my enemies." He commented, not too quietly, as he held it up to obscure Juniper's face from where he stood. "Is this supposed to be a mirror, or a window?" He asked, turning it this way and that.​

 

[Ivy Ashworth]

Ivy headed to the SDA meeting, curious about what they would do. She knew there was a new leader, though Sydney was still there as well. The new leader started the meeting, though, introducing herself as Juniper and explaining what they were going to do. They would be talking about Dark Detectors, and Ivy was immediately curious. The Ravenclaw explained two of the times, and then Sydney took over. She explained why this was important, then talked about the sneakoscope and secrecy sensor. Ivy picked up a secrecy sensor and turned it around to observe it. She wondered how it worked. Maybe she should look it up in the library later?

 

[Flynn North-McGowan]

Flynn had found the SDA meetings to be somewhat useful, if only because they offered another chance to practice his spellwork. So, it was a little disappointing to arrive to find out that they wouldn't be doing that this time and would just be talking about some useful objects. He was quiet as he listened, shifting his weight to his good foot while he was standing still before folding his arms across his chest. Though, then he spotted Ivy inspecting one of secrecy sensors, so he decided to wander over, peering over the girl's shoulder. "You have something in your hair," he lied rather easily, hearing the sensor in her hand vibrate. "Huh," he mused, stepping from behind the girl and standing next to her instead, "Guess it works."

[Aisa Hunter]

The dueling tournament was the main reason Aisa was part of the SDA, but she still went to the events usually. The new leader introduced herself and then told them what they would be doing today. The idea of looking at some Dark Detectors wasn’t a bad one, and Aisa was pretty interested, especially as she would likely run into these objects in her future job as well. Adorah’s sister explained about two of the objects and then Sydney took over. Aisa hadn’t heard of most of these before, and she was curious about them. Once the explanation was over, she headed over to where Sydney was standing and picked up a sneakoscope, turning it over in her hand. She wondered how useful it was, as it probably picked up more on silly pranks than anything else.

 

[Ivy Ashworth]

Ivy looked up from the secrecy sensor as Flynn approached, her hand flying up to her hair at his words. But then the sensor started to vibrate and she understood what was going on. She not so gently poked him with it. “Guess so.” She said, then glanced at him as he came to stand next to her. Their conversation over break was one that still stuck with her, and she guessed Flynn was one of her friends now, sort of. She wasn’t sure how it had happened, but she actually kind of enjoyed his company. Even if he could still be annoying. “I wonder what the difference is between this thing and the sneakoscope, wouldn’t they both kind of do the same thing?” She asked, glancing at the sneakoscope Sydney had tested out earlier. “I mean, lying is untrustworthy, right?” She held out the sensor to him. "Do you want to try it?" She asked.

[Ellie Tsai]

Ellie didn't know too much about defensive spells or even the opposite of those yet. But she had a hunger to know everything which was why she showed up to the Duelling Chamber after hearing about some event a club was going to be hosting down there. It was a near space she hadn't seen another like it at the school yet. She found a seat looking around and noticing how much older the other students were compared to her. Her face didn't betrayed her nerves however as she took a few notes on the items that the older students were talking about. They sounded seriously cool describing how to use them, the sneakoscope sounded particularly interesting. Once they had the chance to test the items out she took a moment with each thing while listening to the comments the other students were making. Ellie herself stayed relatively quiet just enjoying learning something that it seemed she wouldn't have learned about otherwise. Mostly she hoped it was okay that she was there, but no one had complained yet.

 

[Indira Khatri]

Indi liked being apart of SDA mostly because it gave her an opportunity to practice spells when the rest of her classes lacked a more hands on element. But she was curious what this meeting was going to be about when she entered the club room and took note of the bizarre objects that seemed to be on display. She found a spot near the front where she could get a good view of everything and listened closely as Juniper began explaining what those things were. Her interest grew as Sydney began next and smirked at the mention of untrustworthy roommates. Apparently she wasn’t the only one to hate most of the people she lived with. When they were done Indi didn’t hesitate before moving forward to get a closer look at the items. It was different than what she had expected but she found she was enjoying herself.

 

[Leia Hume]

Leia had not always been a part of the student defense club but in the last few year she'd signed up because of her duelling wins, it made sense in her head if she wanted to continue to win that she be immersed in all things that could relate to it. But as she sat down in the duelling chamber and listened to the leaders talk about some devices she realised that they might not always focus on things that were useful to duelling. But the items themselves weren't uninteresting, she just wasn't as keen on them as others appeared to be. The sneakoscope did seem like it could be quite handy, she went towards one of them thinking about how it could be practical. ​

Lumio had never been very good at fighting magic, perhaps because he wasn't very good with magic, but he liked going to clubs, it was always fun to be involved in things and really Lumio liked learning about different elements of magic even if he wasn't great at magic and found lectures difficult to listen to. This did seem to fall heavily on the latter with the two leaders of the club spending a good amount of time telling them about the four devices that were useful for defensive stuff. When they could Lumio went over, he was quite keen to see it and keen to get a good look at them. They seemed interesting. ​

 

[Liusaidh Styx]

Liusaidh tended to enjoy more offensive things but this was the only other club she was a part of, and Liusaidh figured she was probably always one step away from being kicked out of clubs if she didn't at least appear to be trying. She walked into the room and sat down, having to stop herself from galling asleep as they the two leaders talked about really pointless things. As soon as the leaders were finished Liusaidh headed out, uninterested in looking at items she'd definitely seen before. ​

 

[Leonardo Orr]

Leonardo was visibly nervous as he made his way to the first meeting of the year. He hadn't signed up for many clubs but this had seemed like a good one to start with. He wasn't sure what would be involved in more of them and really he didn't want to make a bad impression on the people at this club. He didn't want to seem like he didn't know what he was doing...but he didn't. He shifted awkwardly from one foot to the other and took a seat. He wasn't waiting long till the leaders were talking about items that were defensive devices and Leonardo made sure to keep his attention. He watched as other approached the object began speaking after but he just hung back not wanting to force his way to seeing the objects. ​

 

[Celia Vuong]

The primary reason Celia had joined the SDA was to learn new spells that would help her with the dueling tournament. So it was incredibly frustrating that the first meeting of the year was a glorified show-and-tell. For a moment, Celia thought about leaving, but she didn't want to leave a bad impression on the two club leaders. One was a prefect in her house, and the other was someone Elliot had flagged as noteworthy during their conversation last year. Besides, she supposed it couldn't hurt to learn more about the magical world, seeing as she would be stuck here for a while.

The items turned out to actually be quite interesting — even if they had the most ridiculous names. Celia wasn't convinced they'd be all that useful, especially considering that one of them was going off right this second. But that didn't mean she wouldn't try them out. She reached for a Foe-Glass, curious to know what it would show her. There were quite a few people she disliked at Hogwarts, and she wondered if any would appear in the glass. However, when she peered into the mirror, all she could see were dark shadows. Frowning, she twisted it this way and that before holding it up to the person next to her. "Can you see anything?" Maybe it was broken.

 

[Brooke Townsend]

Brooke lurked near the back of the gathered club members as Sydney and Juniper started the meeting for today. It was early enough that she didn't want to draw Sydney's ire unnecessarily, even if she knew in the back of her mind she was running out of time to change Sydney's mind on their fractured relationship. Another part of her, equally ridiculous, was also worried if she got too close she'd show up in Sydney's foe glass somehow, even if she knew it was silly. Still, once the demonstration was over, Brooke couldn't resist getting a closer look at some of the items, sure she'd seen at least one or two of them around their house at home.

She was inspecting some of the objects when the younger Slytherin next to her held up the foe glass. "Hmm, no just vague shapes," she said, ducking down to peer a little closer. "But that's good right? Either you don't have clear enemies, or they're not close enough to threaten you," she offered, pleased to get to show off a little knowledge of the items and also confirm for herself that she had no immediate enemies near. @Celia Vuong

Celia's frown deepened as the older girl ducked down, finding the gesture a bit condescending. Was that really necessary? She knew she was short, even compared to some of the first years, but she didn't think she was that short. The other girl didn't seem to see anything noteworthy either, so maybe the glass wasn't defective. "I guess," Celia said, her gaze flickering up as she took in the room. "It'd be more useful if it could show you exactly who your enemies are and where they are." She was picturing something like Find My Friends — but for one's enemies. The thought of such an app was ridiculous enough to make her smile briefly. "What if you had an enemy you didn't know of? By the time they show up in the glass, it might be too late." Celia didn't think she had any secret enemies, not here at Hogwarts at least, but she thought it a valid concern for someone who actually needed a Foe Glass.

[Blair Bianchi]

Blair was looking forward to SDA as it was something she enjoyed in Hogwarts, if not counting dances and Quidditch. And once she got to the meeting, she excitedly looked at instruments that Sydney showed them and one thing she surely understood was that she absolutely didn't understand how to pronounce their names. So she took the sneakoscope trying to remember what was it called and instead of that accidentally let out: "can someone lie to me?" She wanted to know how it worked, so probably it only made sense that she let it out and just hoped that someone will answer to that.

 

[Tilly Drage]

Despite being knocked out by Flynn in the first round of the Duelling Tournament last year, Tilly decided to return to the SDA. Even though she’d lost, it would feel even worse to give up the competitions entirely over one match. She arrived at the meeting, expecting to learn some spells that they’d already covered in previous years. She was pleasantly surprised to find out that they’d learn something completely new today.

Tilly approached the devices, both hesitant and intrigued. She was a little disappointed that Liusaidh had decided to dip out right away, but perhaps it was for the best. A bored Liusaidh and magical devices didn't sound like a good combination. Tilly was just reaching for a foe-glass when one of her housemates spoke up. Blair, the transfer student, who she hadn’t gotten to know very well yet even though she’d just joined the Quidditch team as an alternate chaser.

“Uhm- Blair, you’re ugly,” Tilly said with a playful grin. It was obviously a lie, as the girl was good-looking, and not ugly at all. Blair had wanted a lie, right? After a moment, Tilly kicked herself for saying the first thing that flew out of her mouth.

Ronald wish that he is not late for this event so he runs to the dueling chamber and listens to Juniper about what will be happening today we learn something new and when the time that Sydney talk about sneakoscope and Secrecy Sensor that will be a big help to us so he tries to watch meanwhile before he starts to interacts to others members.
