Ethan doesn't like to not know things. When he finds something he's unsure about he either does his best to learn or he lies. So far it's worked out ok for him as he stumbles through the magical world. He is used to adapting to new places since he's had to move around growing up and always makes sure to check local libraries and bookstores to catch up on all the local urban legends, ghost stories, and cryptids. He also very self sufficient since he's on his own a lot when his mom has to work and knows how to take care of himself. Being unsupervised also led to his love of old black and white monster movies that always seemed to be on when it was past his bedtime but he didn't want to sleep. He hardly feels like a kid a lot of the time and has no problem standing up for himself or talking to grown ups.

Ethan was born in New York City to a single mother and for as long as he can remember it's only ever been the two of them against the world. He's never met his dad and knows very little about him other than his name and that he was a musician and didn't stick around. Growing up money was always been tight for them and they've had to move around a lot since his mom has never had a lot of luck finding a stable long term job. Ethan never minded the moving around and thought it was cool that he got to see so much of the country. It did mean he had to change schools a lot and was never able to keep up with any friends. Not that he minded much.
His mother kept her magical nature a secret from him until he was ten when she finally told him the truth. It was a big shock to Ethan since he had spent so much of his time devoted to learning about supernatural things. But it did explain some of the weird things that would happen around him over the years. He had a million and one questions but before he could get answers to any of them he had been sent to live in New Zealand to live with one of his mom's old school friends, Ernie Wilder. His mom hadn't mentioned him before but in the end Ethan thought he was pretty cool but it helped that he worked with owls. Spending a whole year in one place was a bit unusual for him and he found himself trying to talk to anyone he could to try and get a handle on this whole magical thing before he'd be off to school. He hoped that his mom would tell him to come home before he started school so he could go to Ilvermorny like she did, but the call never came.
