Open Y41 Start of Year Feast

Augustus had been incredibly relieved not to receive a head boy badge in the mail over break. He really hadn't expected to get one, but then again, he hadn't expected his prefect's badge either. The boy had taken his seat in the Great Hall, waving over at Addison at the Hufflepuff table. He hoped that talking to Ryan and coming to a compromise with him about scheduling his time would help them have a better final year. He hoped Ryan would leave them alone on dates and at dances now, at least. As Professor Kingsley said a bit more about what had happened in the forest last year, Augustus glanced at Ryan from the corner of his eye. If he hadn't known better, it sounded like something Ryan would have done. He probably would have, if he had gotten the idea first. He wondered if Ryan would drag him out into the forest soon. The food arrived, and Augustus put some on his plate quietly. He wondered what this final year would be like.

Isadora smiled at the girl as she spoke about her parents, though she couldn't help but be a little jealous as the girl said more. It sounded like a sweet story, something Isadora would never have heard about her own parents. She didn't even know how they met but doubted it was anything as sweet as the story Bianca told her. Probably at some stuffy event for important families, pushed together by their own parents. Isadora shuddered to think about it. "That's funny." She said to the girl with a grin. "What house was your mum in then?"

Mish just shrugged a shoulder, "Dunno, maybe ya just pandering for attention or summit." He knew that he sometimes lied about things just because he wanted people to pay attention to him. "Or ya think it's funny. Imagine going to Germany just to be murdered by a big old snake." It was pretty funny, even if he was sure many other people would disagree with that statement. But Mischa didn't care what other people thought most of the time. And he doubted people would go to Germany specifically to get killed by a basilisk, but that was beside the point. Though, when the girl introduced herself, Mish offered her a toothy grin. Mischa. Or ya can just call me Mish if ya want."

Pearl rolled her eyes as he said exactly what she was doing. She thought the latter thing she could be doing was a little silly, who would find it funny, it wasn't meant to be funny really. "Well, I'm not doing either of those things. I would never lie about the time my father's brother was killed by a basilisk in germany," she repeated statement a little louder than the rest of the sentence, as it was the most important part of her sentence. "Mischa, Mish," she repeated. "So....is this then where we exchange life stories? To start the bonding process?" She really just wasn't sure how to keep the conversation going and didn't want to eat in silence. Pearl had never been left wanting for conversation with her dad but she'd never interacted with kids her own age.

It was a start of a new year and like usual, Valencia didn’t like the fact that she was back yet again. But what had surprised her was what she got in the mail during her break. She hadn’t expected to get a prefect badge, and she wasn’t actually sure if she liked the idea of being a prefect. Valencia spent most of the train ride as well as the professors speech, looking down at the badge that was pinned on her robes, frowning at it from time to time. She politely clapped at the new students that had joined their house, and it wasn’t long until the food appeared on the table, and she began to dig in, trying to forget about the shiny pinned badge on her robes.

Molly was super excited to be back for school. She couldn’t wait to see her friends, and she was excited to be with her fluffy companion as well as maybe even get the chance to make new friends. However, Molly was a little tired from the train ride, and the speech that the professor was giving didn’t help at all. She had kept dozing on and off throughout the speech, as the speech had been the same practically almost every year. When it was time for the new students to be sorted, Molly cheered at the newly sorted Hufflepuffs, excitedly waving at them as they arrived at their table. When it was time for the food, Molly sped right ahead for the food, not caring about the people around her. She was starving.

Nolan was glad to be back at school. He couldn't wait to be with his friends and his bandmates. He was glad that he was going to be away from his mother for a bit. He didn't really want to deal with her annoying pressure about his career choices or anything. He listened as the professor gave the speech, a little bored with the fact that they were bringing up the fact about the incident that had happened last year. He clapped and cheered at the new students that had joined Hufflepuff this year and suddenly dug into the food once it was put onto the table.

Abby was a little nervous and excited to be back at school this year. She indeed enjoyed her time at school last year, though she didn't really make many friends last year. But she had hoped that it would somewhat change this year and she would at least make a few. She listened as her head of house was making the speech this year instead of the professor. She also clapped quietly during the sorting ceremony. It wasn't long until the food appeared and Abby shyly took some of the food, waiting for everyone around her to take what they wanted.

Joshua was excited to be at Hogwarts. Since he entered the school, everything had looked so epic and he honestly couldn't take his eyes off everything. Josh was glad that Senna had been sorted into the same house as him and as glad that he had at least known someone that was in the same house as him. He listened excitedly as the professor, who he had found out was his head of house, had spoken. His eyes went wide at the mention of a basilisk, even though he wasn't sure what it exactly was. It sounded dangerous but cool. "Woah! How did they let that in?" Joshua muttered quietly to himself. When the food appeared, he immediately dug into the food, not caring about anything else at that moment.

Coming back to Hogwarts was always a bittersweet feeling, and most years, it was a lot more sweet than bitter. Not this year. All day, Harper had been haunted by a distinct absence by her side. It lingered even now, when she was surrounded by friends and housemates. Today was supposed to be the day her little brother finally got to see Hogwarts. After Lila had failed to get a letter two years ago, Ryland had been Harper's last chance at having a magical sibling. She had known it was dangerous to put so much hope into something so completely out of her control, yet she'd done it anyway.

But the letter had never come, which meant she was now officially the only magical person in her family. All her life, Harper had wanted to stand out from her siblings, to be special. She didn't feel special now — just lonely. That sense of loneliness grew as she watched Hunter's adoptive sister get sorted into Gryffindor. Even though Harper was happy for her best friend and knew how much he cared for Crimson, she couldn't help but think of their conversation in the forest years ago, when he'd complained about his mums wanting to adopt more children. Hunter hadn't even wanted siblings, and now he had two of them, both magical. Meanwhile, she had none.

Harper knew her jealousy was irrational, but that didn't stop her from feeling it. Thankfully, she was momentarily distracted from those feelings when Professor Kingsley got up to speak. It was a bit strange to see someone other than the headmistress make the start of term announcements. But the real surprise came with Professor Kingsley revealed that Lysander and his friend had been expelled for breeding a basilisk. Harper's knowledge of magical creatures wasn't great (though it was certainly improving thanks to Hunter), but she knew what a basilisk was. The two former students had basically created the magical equivalent of a bomb. And they had done it at a school. Horrified didn't even begin to cover what Harper was feeling, and she barely noticed the end of the announcements or the appearance of the food.

Celia couldn't believe she was still here. Two students had nearly killed a bunch of people last year, and her parents still wouldn't let her transfer out. If that wasn't clear proof that they didn't actually love her, she didn't know what was. It was becoming clear that nothing would make them change their minds, and that meant she would be stuck here for another four years.

She also couldn't believe that Professor Alicastell was still here. Shouldn't someone have been fired for what had happened last year? It still wasn't clear what exactly had happened, but two students couldn't cause a near mass-casualty incident without a failure in oversight somewhere. As far as Celia could tell, all of the heads of house were still here. What about the other professors? She studied the staff table, trying to identify any changes.

Celia was so busy staring at the staff table that she didn't notice that the headmistress had disappeared until Professor Kingsley spoke up. That was an interesting change. Maybe Alicastell was on her way out. Most of the announcements were pretty normal, but then Professor Kingsley brought up the forest incident. Celia's eyes widened when the professor mentioned that the two former students had been trying to breed a basilisk. She immediately thought of Hogwarts, the original one, which had contained perhaps the most famous basilisk in history. That monster had been bred by her house's founder to kill muggleborns.

Why had the basilisk from last year been bred? How had it been bred? This new information bought both questions and hope. One of the reasons why her mom had insisted she come to Hogwarts NZ was because there was supposed to be less blood prejudice here. Celia wondered what her mom, who was a muggleborn, would make of the news that the dangerous creature had been a basilisk. Maybe she wasn't as stuck here as she had thought.

The girl, Pearl, continued to insist that she wasn't lying about her father's brother being killed by a basilisk in Germany, but Mish still wasn't really buying it. "A'ight, whatever ya say, I guess," though he was making it very obvious that he thought she was lying about it. But he supposed he didn't actually have any proof she was lying. But then she started talking about sharing life stories and starting some kind of 'bonding process' and Mischa just gave her a strange look. "What are ya talking about? Why would we share life stories?" Was that something other people did?
@Pearl Parra

Pearl let out a long over dramatic sigh at his words, "I talk about me, you talk about you, we get to know each other," Pearl explained no matter how little of an explanation this was. "That's how people get to know each other, or do you want to talk about the weather," she reoirted, fairly certain that talking about the weather would be singularly the most boring thing to happy to her ever. She hated talking about boring things. "Like......where are you from, do you have siblings, why are you in slytherin?"

After the sorting ceremony, Birdie didn't know what to do. Yes, she had seen other children walk to their respective tables but it was all sort of too much for her. Taking a deep breath, she made her way to the Gryffindor table following her fellow house first years.

The table was long, longer than any table Birdie had seen before. Reaching her head across the table, she could barely see the end. Once the other first years had been sorted, a lady began to talk. She introduced herself as the Head of Gryffindor and Birdie made sure to capture a mental image so she knew at least someone from her house. As her speech rang on, Birdie soon felt on edge as she mentioned a 'basilisk'. Birdie had no clue what that was, but by the murmers that surrounded her, it didn't sound nice. She didn't know what to expect at Hogwarts, but she didn't expect dangerous creatures roaming around the school. That's the last place you'd want them to be.

When the speech came to an end, Birdie waited for waitresses or something of the kind to stroll in with handfuls of food. But to her surprise they didnt because they appeared in front of her out of nowhere. Whilst everyone was digging in, she was gobsmacked. Starving, but speechless. It took her 5 minutes to overcome her shock before she dug in herself. It was yum, she couldn't lie. The row on row of delicious food didn't end and she didn't know when she would stop, or if she could. Birdie didn't know who to thank for it, but she hoped they already knew.

Maybe, just maybe, magic isn't so scary afterall. Or it is. Dangerous creatures and food aren't really things you can compare. But afterall, you can't have the good without the bad. And Birdie just hoped she'd have more of the good.
