Matt silently cursed his boss and whoever else had set this up as he spotted the gnomes coming out of the ground. He also cursed Kahurangi as he felt her grip on his ankles tighten. He grimaced as she yelled at him that she was picking up speed and they were barreling through them. It didn't sound like he had a lot to say in the matter. "You're going to be my eyes!" He called to her before ducking his head so he wouldn't barrel into any gnomes face first. He hoped Kahurangi could look out for the both of them until they were past these creatures.

Monty covered his mouth in an unsuccessful attempt to keep himself from laughing. He felt as if he ought to be commentating, but he wouldn't have been able to string a sentence together if he'd tried. Once everybody had ploughed through the gnomes, it was time to stir things up once again. Monty raised his wand and sent up the signal. Seconds later, the school's resident poltergeist popped up from behind one of the tents, a full kettle of radioactive-green slime sloshing around in his hand. Vex was renowned for making mischief when Monty didn't want him to, but he was also remarkably good at making mischief on demand. He cackled wildly as he swooped in over the heads of the racers and began to deposit the contents of the kettle all over their heads.
Vex the poltergeist has come into play. He will attempt to pour slime all over as many people as he can, hoping to make them slow down or slip over!

Kace felt in his gut that he had this race in the bag, no sweat! Then something emerged from the ground out of nowhere, something became a few somethings. Kace squinted his eyes trying to make out what it was that was disrupting the race. "Oh snap! These little whatever you call it," Kace picked up his pace trying to mow down the gnomes that were attempting to slow them down. "Not today!" Kace witness Elliot accidentally push one away with his palm and Kace gave one a good kick in the tush.

They manage to pass the fields of gnomes successfully, it didn't mean there were no more interruptions. Overhead a ghost with slime tries to hit them, tries to slow them down. Kace weaved side to side, trying to avoid at all cost from getting hit. "Good thing I didn't wear my favorite kicks!" As he said this a ball of slime was his on his shoulder. Kace grimace, the slime getting some parts of his face and neck.
"Dude, this feels weird!"

The tall woman was caught off guard by the gnomes but was impressed by the added addition to the race. It made it more fun and silly to see these pesky creatures tummy roll away from them. She would've been afraid to trip over if she wasn't partnered up with Aeon. He proves to be very useful in their partnership, swiping the gnomes out of the way like a fly swatter. Madlyn cheered him on, keeping her pace up. Of course, that wasn't the end of the shenanigans. Madlyn looked up and was hit with slime square in her chest. "Aeon! Watch out for the slime!" Madlyn warns, spitting out bits of it as some got into her mouth.

Kahurangi knew she was putting Matt in the firing line of the gnomes, and wasn't surprised when he put his head down. She did her best to steer them past the gnomes, relieved when they emerged the other side. "Safe to look now!" She called out to her partner before continuing on. The relief was short lived though, and Kahurangi groaned as she spotted Vex, bracing for something nasty. Of course he'd have a hand in this. Kahurangi tried to keep focused on the race, pushing forward and gripping Matt's ankles firmly, though she couldn't hold back a yelp of shock as she felt cold slime hit the back of her head. She shuddered as the chilly drips made their way down the back of her shirt, and tried not to let the discomfort distract her.

Under normal circumstances, Blake would have been furious with Tyler for veering off the quickest path to victory. These were not normal circumstances though, and Blake very much didn't want to get bitten by a gnome. He followed Tyler's swerve around the worst of the gnomes, and once they were past them began running faster, trying to push back to where they had been in the race. It wasn't long though before another obstacle presented itself and Blake cried out in dismay. He didn't much mind getting slimed, but he didn't want the track getting any slipperier. Pushing ahead, Blake did his best to dodge out of the way of any slime puddles, crying out in shock when a big blob of slime splashed right in his face. "AAAAA! I CAN'T SEE!" Blake called out in a panic, dropping one of Tyler's legs to scrub at his eyes.

After hitting what felt like a few more gnome faces with his palms, Elliot hazarded peeking an eye open when the gnome contacts started thinning out. He managed a short sigh of relief when it seemed like they'd cleared them without any wayward bites, but Elliot's relief was short lived when he felt Kace suddenly veer them to the sides. "Oh what now??" He asked, not really wanting to know, feeling something cold and slimy drip onto his ankles. This wasn't exactly what he'd signed up for when he'd imagined the race, but maybe he should have expected this to not go smoothly. The apparent slime raining down on them was very smooth, as Elliot found out when he placed his hand in one of the nearby puddles, feeling his arm shoot out away from him. There was a brief scramble for balance where Elliot felt his other arm flail a bit and he hoped Kace was able to keep them upright as he pinwheeled randomly back and forth trying to regain their momentum.

Jasper yelled as gnomes popped up. "Keep going!" He shouted at Aiden to motivate him as he kept running while holding his ankles. It was hard to pay attention to any of the other participants, but Jasper smiled a bit when he heard yelling from Tyler and Blake. They had barely passed the gnomes when vex popped up. Jasper looked at him in awe, he'd only heard about the poltergeist and had always hoped to meet him. But he was quickly reminded that now was not the time. Jasper let out a yell as slime fell on his head and slid into his neck, the feeling very uncomfortable. He nearly slipped over some, but managed to keep going with Aiden somehow.

Matt was pretty happy with the decision to close his eyes as they powered through the gnomes. He'd collided headfirst with a few, but at least none of them had grabbed his face. He opened his eyes just in time to see Vex and he groaned inwardly. The slime he threw was not a surprise, and Matt just let out a resigned sigh as he felt it fall onto his hair and drip onto his face and eyes. So far, this was a great way to be publicly humiliated, and he reminded himself to learn how to say no to things.

Tyler's heart was racing from the gnomes and he was still freaking out a bit. He'd never been so up close to them, and felt like it was unfair of whoever had set this up to do that. He'd have to find someone to complain to later, because Blake was pushing ahead with determination. But then the school poltergeist showed up with slime, and Tyler immediately started to slip on it when he set his hands on slimy patches of grass. Then Blake started to yell that he couldn't see and dropped one of Tyler's leg. They could hardly keep going like that, and Tyler used his newly free leg to kick at Blake. "I can! Just keep going!"

For a grown adult, the gnomes hadn't been too big of an issue to deal with, though Aeon was glad to have put them behind him all the same. from what he could tell, they were still among the ones who had pushed further ahead, and the man could only laugh at some of the reactions from the younger children. "We've got this Madlyn! Looks to me like none of these kids are getting any of the points Monty promised them!" He called out, looking to goad the students into giving the race everything they had, even if he was feeling certain that he'd win with Ateara at the wheel, as it were. He could hear the taller woman shout something down to him, but before his brain could process what she had said, his world was obscured by a sea of acid green. Unable to see clearly, Aeon scrabbled for a hold, feeling the ground beneath him slid away. Gone was the rough dirt and dry grass, instead replaced by slippery slime that the man couldn't grab onto, his palms gliding across the sludge and moving every which way. This wasn't looking good for them, and all he could do was slide on forwards and hope for the best.

Aiden was feeling as competitive as he could. All the distractions from professors just gave him even more energy. He didn't like loosing and he wasn't planning to lose this time, especially if he was taking part in this race with Jasper, a boy he thought was cool. Crawling as fast as he could, wanting to look at others, yet knowing that he couldn't made him a bit nervous. Going through gnomes wasn't that hard, although Aiden didn't like the idea about the poltergeist, hoping to get past it without getting too much harm from Vex. He had only heard about Vex and what he heard didn't make him anymore excited about actually seeing him there. Aiden heard Jasper yell and it made him go even faster just right at the moment when the slime also fell on his head, Aiden also yelled - Ewwwwww! Aiden still was doing his best to crawl forward, this also not interrupting him that bad.

Monty's stomach hurt from trying to contain himself. Inviting Vex to the race had absolutely been the best idea he'd ever had. The children and professors slipped and slimed their way towards the finish line, persevering in the face of it all, though not everybody looked as amused as Monty. The winners were just meters away from being crowned, now. Monty cheered them on from the sidelines.
FINISH LINE

They were still making steady progress, and Jasper gasped as he saw the finish line in sight. He pushed Aiden on. "C'mon!" He yelled at him.

Even though Matt was pretty miserable with all the slime coating his hair and face, he kept going. He knew they had to be close now, even if he had trouble seeing. He kept going, wondering how much longer it would be.

Aeon's hair clung to his face, slathered with neon slime, and it was all he could do to keep pressing forward. He shook his head this way and that, not unlike a dog drying itself after coming in from the rain, and it was as his vision cleared of the muck that he finally saw it. The finish line only meters from what he slipped and slid across the grass. "Yes! This is it! Here we go!" The man yelled over the chaos, his arms working furiously to get him that much further. It wasn't long before the strip signifying the finish was practically right beneath his hands. He just had to rely on one final push from Ateara. It was so close now.

Blake was being impossibly dramatic about some slime, and Tyler was frustrated with him. He pushed his ankle back in Blake's hand somehow and urged him on. He saw Jasper overtake them, and that couldn't happen. "Come on!"

Madlyn continued onward despite getting hit by the slime and the slime ground, but she held tight onto Aeon and continued the race. She gave it all that she got and kept going hoping they would able to cross that finish line.

Team Awesome crossed the finish line, because of course they did. A prior Wheelbarrow Race Champion™ and a Part-Giant? Aeon had been confident in their victory, but even still, he'd held his breath in anticipation while they made it across the end. It wasn't until his ankles were released and he dropped to the ground in exhaustion that he let out the held breath in a victorious gasp, pumping one hand into the sky. "Yeah!" He whooped, too tired to roll from his sprawled out position, or do much of anything else. "Still got it."

No points for the students today, Monty.

Kace tried with all his might to keep the other boy balance on the ground, the slime was really slippery. "Hold on, Ellio!" Kace shouted over all the commotion and shouting around them, Kace bend his elbows and held them tight to his sides. Kace kept going until he crossed the finish line with his Hufflepuff friend.

Elliot couldn't believe they were somehow still upright and moving, thankful for Kace's confidence. Somewhere he could have sworn he heard what sounded like Lily's voice cheering him on, but didn't care look anywhere but forward as the finish line got closer. They weren't in front, but Elliot was just glad to have made it past everything else on the course, breathing a sigh of relief as they passed the line and content to collapse on the grass to catch his breath as soon as Kace let go.

Madlyn let go of his ankles the moment she was sure they crossed the finish line, it had been an eventful race. She remembers winning this race with Briar years ago, but it had not been so challenging as this one. They had finished the race and won. Madlyn laughed out loud, bending over with slime covering most of her shirt. "Same here, we make a great team," the tall woman says while catching her breath. It had been quite exhausting once the obstacles got in the way. "And since I helped you win the race, you're coming to my wedding," Madlyn invites him with a tired smile, insisted that he comes. She'll invite his mother and Monty later, and the rest of the staff members.

Aiden was crawling as fast as possible as thet were getting closer and closer to the finish line. He saw people finish and he was annoyed that he couldn't manage to be the first with Jasper. He crawled past the finish line. They did it!

Jasper was a bit grumpy to be beaten by some old people and by Elliot, who seemed like he wouldn't be able to run very fast if it was a normal race. But all in all, third place wasn't bad. He cheered with Aiden, mostly because he'd beaten Blake and Tyler to the finish line.

Monty couldn't believe it. Professor Summers had done it once again. The students barrelled over the line a few seconds later, most of them collapsing in a tired heap on the grass. "A valiant effort on Mister Briar and Mister Corelli's part," Monty said, "as they cross the line in second place. In third place, Mister Night and Mister Briggs. But taking home the prize for first place are the absolutely unstoppable duo, Professor Summers and Professor Ateara! Congratulations to you both. I'm afraid that means no house points for the rest of you, but at least you can say you tried your best. A dignified defeat. Thank you everybody for participating; do come over and see me if you'd like to be rid of the slime. Drinks can be found in the tent my right."
