Manaia was overwhelmingly excited to begin his time at Hogwarts, having looked forward to it for years. He was a little disappointed not to be sorted into the house his aunt was head of, but that disappointment was quickly washed away as he found that he would be rooming with two boys he had met before school, who shared his passion for music. The three of them quickly teamed up to form a band, an outcome that thrilled Manaia. He spent most of the rest of the year relaxing, getting to know his new classmates, making friends and enjoying the change of scenery in his move to Hogwarts.
Manaia had been waiting for today for years, and now that it had finally arrived, it was almost too much to bear. Entering the great hall with his new classmates, his eyes didn't flick up like so many others did. He had heard all about the magical ceiling, knew he would have years and years at school to enjoy it, but for now, he looked over at the Professors' table. It was almost strange to see Auntie Kahu sitting there, looking so formal in her robes and kākahu. He almost didn't quite feel like he was allowed to wave. Almost. But she was still Auntie Kahu, and his face split into a broad grin as she waved back. This was going to be fine.

Now that he had greeted his aunt, Manaia finally took a moment to take everything in. It felt like hundreds of eyes were on his little group as he looked around the crowded room, surprised that he was surprised at how crowded the tables were. He knew Hogwarts was a big school, he had always know, but to actually see it was a little bit mind blowing. He listened as the Headmistress spoke and then the hat sang, surprised even though he had been told to expect it. Every bit of information he had begged his auntie for about Hogwarts seemed to have fallen away as he was experiencing it for himself. And then the names began and Manaia found himself tuning out, much as he wanted to pay attention. There was so much to see here. He looked whenever he heard a familiar name, eager to see where the people he had met so far in the magical world would be placed, and as they carried on down the alphabet, at last...

"Te Rangi, Manaia."

Manaia jumped at the sound of his name, unable to suppress a broad grin as he made his way over to the stool, giving Auntie Kahu a last grin and thumbs up before he sat down. The hat covered his face almost completely, only his grin visible underneath, and as he stared into the rough fabric, it struck Manaia how strange it was that his thoughts were being read. By a hat, of all things. He didn't really know how he felt about his privacy, but he may as well try and make the most of this. "Hey Mr. Hat, if you can hear me..." He thought, figuring he may as well try his luck. "It'd be mean as* if you put me in Ravenclaw, I really wanna be in my auntie's house..."

*Mean as - NZ slang for good/cool.

Manaia was overjoyed to return to Hogwarts, valuing the time with his friends. He didn't pay much attention to lessons, focusing on bonding time with his friends, playing with his bandmates, a forest adventure, and time in the Phoenix Scouts. The peace and happiness ended abruptly towards the end of the year however, his comfort crashing down around him as a letter informed him that his parents had separated, that his dad had been having an affair and his family would never be the same again. The news devastated Manaia and he withdrew into himself, becoming quiet and introspective in a way he never had been before.

After the separation of his parents, Manaia struggled to feel settled in his usual life at Hogwarts, far more quiet and withdrawn than usual. He kept up with his usual pursuits, making music with his bandmates and spending time with the Brotherhood, but his heart wasn't in it the same as usual. The Yule Ball was an unusual experience, as one of his classmates kissed him unexpectedly. Manaia found himself dwelling on the kiss for a while afterwards, and while Valentines reminded him painfully of the lost love in his home, he couldn't help thinking about the new feelings growing inside him for Caleb at the same time.

The main difference between Manaia's third and fourth years was that he was no longer the only of his siblings at Hogwarts, with his younger brother Rāwhiti joining him at school. He continued spending time with his roommates and best friends, supporting Nolan through some difficult times. He was pleasantly surprised by an unexpected fling with one of his classmates, Louis Alcott, though their first encounter was interrupted by his brother's enthusiasm, something Manaia would find frustrating for the rest of the year. The other most notable event of the year was a game of Spin The Bottle with his schoolmates, where Manaia wound up kissing about half the kids in his year, including several of his close friends.

Manaia's fifth year was a quiet one, his time split between his friends, his lingering crushes on both Louis and Caleb, and spending time with his whānau. Though he didn't have many notable moments it was a good year, as he felt he was settling more into his own as a young man. It was especially healing to connect with a schoolmate over the experience of having parents divorce, finding someone he could be comfortable relating with in Valeria.

Manaia had hardly thought about today, and now it was here. Something about the fact that he would be leaving Hogwarts just hadn't sunk in properly, not even after all this time. The future had been a vague far off something for so long that he had refused to consider. It wasn't even like he liked school all that much, it just was. And now it wasn't, and he had no idea where to go from here. A job? University? He knew he wanted to talk to Eugene and Nolan, see how far they could take the Badgers, but he wasn't so naïve as to think he'd be able to make a living off music fresh out of school. Being an adult meant figuring out what to do with his adult life, and Manaia was not there yet.

But whether he liked it or not, adulthood had arrived for him. He tried not to fidget as he sat with his friends at graduation, doing his best not to think about what this really meant. This was a great opportunity to hype up his friend's speech, and get a cool bit of paper. If he could just focus on those parts, the rest wouldn't matter so much. That was what Manaia told himself all through Professor Alcott-Ward's introduction, only really tuning in when Eugene took to the podium. He gave a whoop along with his applause, pleased to see his bandmate in such an important position. He smiled through Eugene's speech, glad that at least he had people around him in such an uncertain time. Celia's speech was.... less comforting. Longer, certainly, and some of it went over his head. A lot of what she said made sense though, and he found himself regretting not spending more time with her. There were so many people in this school he hadn't gotten to know properly, and now it was too late.

It was really too late. The speeches were over, and the time had come. Manaia watched as his classmates were called up to the stage, clapping politely for the people he wish he knew, and cheering loudly for the ones he did. The T-s were late enough in the alphabet that most of his friends had gone by now, and when he was called, Manaia tried to ignore the chaotic thumping in his heart as he took to the stage. He had always taken a relaxed approach to life, but those days were over. As he took the diploma and shook Professor Alcott-Ward's hand, all he could think was that this was the start of something terrifying.
