Irene Finch had specifically asked for the tables to be left in place for the exam. If the sixth years were going to be licensed, then they would need to possess the ability to work with their surroundings. Apparating across an empty room was convenient for beginners to practice, but the chances of apparating to a truly empty space were going to be slim to none in the real world. There'd be tree filled forests, garbage strewn alleys, and perhaps, when they were lucky, the occasional field or valley. This would be an especially important test for those students who were interested in careers in the Ministry as apparating was a requirement for many of the positions. It was an important skill, allowing independence of movement.

Irene arrived at the castle just in time to greet the students who were waiting just outside the Great Hall. The students were seated on the benches that had been provided to await their turn. "Good afternoon" she greeted, her icy blue eyes taking them in one by one. "In a moment, I'll begin calling you in alphabetically by your last name. Once I do, I'll ask you to apparate to a spot in the room. You will only get one shot. I will not pass you if even a hair, button, or shoelace remains where you once stood." Irene's gaze drifted by one student in particular. Irene let them sit with that for a moment, wanting it to be clear because she hated the annoying begging for another chance that came when a student failed. She looked at their faces, wondering which ones she would be seeing in the courses that were provided by the Ministry throughout the year. Many people failed the exam on their first try, but the woman did nothing to reassure the students of this fact.

Stepping back into the room, where her clipboard was already charmed to take notes, Irene looked to be sure all was in order and then glanced at the list and called the first student forward. Once the student was inside, Irene shut the door tightly and began the exam.

OOCOut of Character:

Roleplay your character's attempt to apparate to a point in the room. Don't forget that the Great Hall would look as it would on a regular day minus the students. :p

You will get an exam grade of A or T depending on whether you roleplay your character succeeding or failing. Extra credit will be given for the level of detail in your roleplay regardless of passing or failing. Feel free to godmod Irene if it is necessary to your roleplay. If you have any questions, PM me. No replies will be accepted beyond Wednesday!

Noemie was nervous about the upcoming exams, but none more so than the than the apparition exam, it was one of those classes that had played on her mind. She needed to do well on it, and the whole class was sitting it, it wasn’t like other exams, where not telling the results didn’t matter, people would know if they failed or pass this. She was holding out hope that the exam would be too hard, and that she wouldn’t do something dumb that would cause her to fail the exam, she just needed to pass this. That was all that was important. The ravenclaw had joined the rest of her year group and was waiting outside the great hall, as name after name was called. It was very much like sorting had been, and much in the same way that sorting for a girl like her with the surname vanity took forever, but the part veela paced around her mind going over all they’d done in the last three lessons, the three D’s and the feeling of being dragged that lasted all of a second. She was nervous of course, but finally as she stood to be one of the last to do it, she was called into the great hall.
The great hall was familiar but it wasn’t laid out like she’d expected it to be. Instead it was exactly as she’d left it that morning after breakfast. Noemie had to think this was just how it was done so that they could show that they were capable of apparating, she didn’t particularly like it, but she would just have to deal with it, after all, she needed to pass this exam. The girl looked to the teacher with her head held high, keen to get started and listened to where exactly she needed to go from where she was. The ravenclaw took a good moment to stare at it, nearly glare at it she was committing it to memory so much. Once she had registered the root that she could take to it, accounting for all that was in the way. She had the three D’s in her mind and she focused on apparating across to where she needed to be. She leaned into the feeling that grew over her, and in an instant with the same loud pop she was used to, Noemie was exactly where the teacher/examiner had told her to go to. From what she could see, not one strand of the auburn hair was out of place and she was allowed to leave. Noemie was fairly confident that she’d passed it. A good feeling that was.

The slytherin had fully expected the apparition exam to be outwith the school, but as it turned out it wasn’t. Much like the lessons they’d had it would be within the school and within the great hall. Rory was pretty pleased about that. He was confident that he would manage it, that he would be able to do the exam with ease but he was sure that he couldn’t not work for it. The familiar great hall would be helpful to him. Rory was waiting around with the others as the first few students were called, he was thankful his family name afforded him to be one of the first people called in, not the first but one of them. It meant it wasn’t playing on his mind any longer than it needed to be. The slytherin was sitting on the ground as others studied and paced, he knew he could do this exam, he knew he could apparate, he’d managed it in the classes they’d had prior, so there was no reason that during that time he would’ve lost the ability to do the piece of magic, he could manage it. He needed to, it was one of the most important exams he had in school ever.
It wasn’t too long until Rory’s name was called and he walked into the great hall with a sense of pride about him. He needed to do this, and he knew he was capable of it. The teen ran a hand nervously through his hair as he glanced about the room and finally let his gaze settle upon the professor. It wasn’t too long a wait until the woman was telling him where he was to apparate to. Her words before the exam had gotten under way lingered in his mind, it had to be perfect, not one thing could be lost or out of place. It was maybe a strict sort of lesson, but he fully expected that he would be able to do that. He though more than certainly it was something he could manage to do. The teen focused on the spot he was to go to, seeing it in his mind’s eye and then began using the three D’s. Rory had never concentrated this hard on anything ever before in his life, but he needed this more than anything else. He focused and let his gaze settle forward, he put the three D’s in action in his mind, and after a moment some light leaning into some feelings apparated with perfect precision to where he needed to be. There was a moment of silence and that was it. Rory knew he’d managed it. He left the great hall proud of himself.

Amber had been very nervous about the apparition exam, more than any other exam she had this year. Generally, she was very on top of her studies and never went to an exam without preparing, but for this subject it was almost impossible to prepare. All she could do was go over the three D's in her mind and try to practice her focus. It was impossible to actually practice apparating within Hogwarts, and she had only managed to apparate a handful of times in the final lesson. She had even looked in the library for books on the subject, but it hadn't felt like it really helped her at all. She knew there was no real way to study for this exam, but that hadn't stopped her from trying.

Amber took a seat and waited for the teacher to arrive. The woman intimidated her a little, but that only made her want to impress her more. She gave the woman a friendly smile as she greeted them, but the smile faded a little when the woman mentioned calling them by their last name. She glanced at Ainsley. It meant her girlfriend would be up way before Amber was, and she herself would be one of the last ones to be called. But she didn't linger on that long, as the woman started to talk about how easy it was to fail. She felt herself grow more nervous, her eyes widening slightly. If one hair could fail you, there was a distinct possibility that she wouldn't make it. The teacher headed back into the hall and called the first student. Amber sighed, waiting for her own name to be called. When there were only a handful of students left waiting, it was her turn.

As she entered he great hall, she was surprised to see the tables and everything in place. She had expected it to be the same way it had been during the apparition lessons, but it seemed like they were making things little more difficult for the actual exam. Amber took a deep breath, trying to calm herself before she started to focus on the spot she wanted to apparate to. She repeated the three D's in her mind before allowing herself to focus on the process completely. The familiar feeling from the third lesson soon came over her, and she gave into it, still keeping her focus as strong as she could. When she opened her eyes, she was delighted to see she was in the spot she had been planning to go. Quickly, she looked at her clothes for any missing buttons or laces, but she was relieved to see nothing was left behind. She sighed in relief, feeling like she had passed. She wouldn't know for sure until later, but for now it felt like a huge weight was lifted from her shoulders. She left the great hall to find Ainsley.

As much as she had enjoyed the lessons, as the Apparition exam approached, Ainsley found herself getting more and more nervous. She hadn't had any real difficult apparating in the classroom, but not being able to practice before the exam was unnerving, and she was terrified that the butterflies in her stomach would be her undoing when it really mattered. Even more, though, Ainsley was worried for Amber. She had struggled somewhat during the lessons, and Ainsley knew it would be upsetting if she failed. She tried not to think about it as they waited for the exam to begin. She listened as the teacher explained what they would be doing today, stomach sinking a little as she explained that they were going alphabetically. Not only would Ainsley have to wait until after most of the other people, Amber would have to wait even longer after that. She took Amber's hand and squeezed it gently, waiting with it until her name was called.

But then Ainsley was up and she released Amber's hand, trying not to let her nerves get to her as she entered the Great Hall with the teacher. Looking around, it struck her at once how much harder this really was in a crowded location. The furniture made a big difference. Ainsley took a deep breath, trying not to let that sway her nerves as she looked around and selected the location she wanted to apparate to, between two of the tables. Keeping the three D-s in mind, Ainsley concentrated with all her mind, and it wasn't long at all before she felt that tugging at her stomach. She gave in to the feeling, and quick as a flash, Ainsley was standing in exactly the spot she had hoped to. Beaming brightly, Ainsley double checked that she had managed it successfully, not a single hair or thread missing. Overjoyed and relieved with her success, Ainsley couldn't wipe the grin from her face as she left the room. She lingered for the rest of the exam, waiting for Amber to finish, still nervous about Amber's result.

It had been a long time since Lizzie had been nervous about an exam, but it had also been a long time since she had actually tried in a class. Academics were never going to be her strongest suit, but apparition was different. Being able to apparate meant freedom, and independence, and Lizzie couldn't get those things soon enough. Not getting any more time to practice before the exam had her antsy, even though she had felt like she was finally nailing it in the last lesson. She waited with the rest of her yearmates outside the Great Hall, shifting often with impatience. Lizzie hadn't been early for a class in a long time, and it felt like it took a thousand years before the woman finally came out and explained to them how this was going to work. Lizzie had to suppress a groan at the explanation though. This was the exact same problem she had had at her sorting - why did Taylor have to be so late in the alphabet?

Pacing with frustration as more and more of her classmates took their turn and left, Lizzie was practically buzzing with impatience by the time her name was finally, finally called. She was so relieved not to be waiting any longer that it didn't hit Lizzie until she was standing in the room that now she had to do the thing she had been nervous about. Right. Trying not to let the clutter in the room distract her Lizzie picked her spot, keeping the three Ds in mind as she tried to focus her thoughts. She remembered that in the last lesson drawing on the focus she felt during a Quidditch match had helped, and surprisingly, the jitters she felt were similar enough to pre-match jitters that she found it even easier to sink into that focus. It wasn't long before Lizzie felt the pull across the room, and to her relief found herself standing in exactly the right spot a moment later. Looking back, Lizzie couldn't suppress a huge grin of relief. She had managed it. "Crushed it!" Lizzie whooped, pumping her fists as she made her way past her classmates still waiting to take their turns.

Being the kind of person to study religiously during the semester, and even more so when exams were around the corner, Flavio found preparing for the apparation exam incredibly difficult. With subjects like transfiguration and defence against the dark arts, he was able to practice the magic he was learning so he could feel somewhat confident for the practical portions of his exams, but with apparation he wasn't able to study other than focusing and remembering the three D's. Being unable to apparate to practice led him to feel uneasy when he arrived outside the great hall for the exam, despite his successful attempts to apparate when he was able to during the lessons. The uncertainty of whether he would still remember how to apparate, and being unable to test himself in the lead up to the exam meant he was more nervous to pass than in any of his other subjects. A more stressful set of nerves, too, given apparation was likely required for his future career path regardless of his grades in other subjects.
As he waited with the other students in his year, listening to the teacher explain the exam to them and stating she would be calling students alphabetically by their surnames, Flavio tried to remain optimistic that everything would turn out okay, that his worries were nothing more than worries and he would pass with flying colours no matter how nervous he felt. While he waited for his name to be called, he tried to remain calm, going over the three D's in his mind and remembering to focus on what he needed to do so he didn't choke at a crucial moment.
Eventually his surname was called, and Flavio quietly stood up to enter the great hall. It surprised him to see all the tables and benches in their usual places after being used to an empty hall during the lessons, but as he stood and took in his surroundings he figured the furniture provided a necessary challenge. Swallowing the lump that had formed in his throat, Flavio listened to the teacher's instructions, looking over the spot on the other side of the room she asked him to apparate to. He took a few minutes to center his thoughts, only then closing his eyes and focusing on the three D's. Soon enough he felt a familiar pull on his stomach paired with motion sickness, and when he opened his eyes as the feeling passed he noticed he had managed to apparate to the exact spot the woman asked him to. Instinctively Flavio ran a hand through his hair and looked down to his shoes to check if any part of his attire or hair had been left behind, and breathed a sigh of relief when it seemed he had nothing to worry about. Feeling confident and happy that he managed to apparate successfully, and realizing his worries prior to the exam were silly, he thanked the teacher for her time before he left the hall.

November was most nervous for her apparition exam, she made her way to the Great Hall, but arriving she noticed it was filled as it normally was during their meals. It was more normal seeing the Great Hall this way she didn't have a second thought about it when she walked in. But as those in front of her began to attempt the final apparation of the semester November realized the room was different from how they had it before. She watched as others went before her, feeling towards the back of the group her nervousness growing. The three D's replayed in her mind over and over as she watched others complete the task. Then is was her turn.

November stepped forward her mind racing and wondering if she was ready to do this in a room full of things. However in order to be allowed to perform this magic once she was 17 and an adult in the magical world she needed to complete this exam. She marked the spot she was going with her eyes and in her mind, focusing on seeing herself there November closed her eyes. Determination crossed her mind as she felt the pull of the magic, she was getting more used to the feeling each time they had class and she was at the point where it didn't scare her as much. She wanted to just pretend as though the tables and benches were just a hoop to pass through. Suddenly her feet felt as though they weren't on the ground but as soon as that happened she felt them on the ground once more. She opened her eyes being where she was meant to be and in one piece, not even a missing hair!
