The Sorting Ceremony

Surprisingly the final few weeks before she started school had been rather enjoyable and Luna had liked meeting all the new people she had. Perhaps some of them would become permanent fixtures in her life over the next few years but more than likely most would fade into obscurity. Luna followed the first year group off the train and made her way to the castle. Standing in the entrance hall Luna did her best to ignore the chatter from her fellow firsties. It was cute that they were all debating who would go where but she really wasn't interested in joining in at that time. She was concentrating. Once the doors opened she made her way into the Great hall with the group. Luna knew that she would be called toward the end of the group so she settled in for a long wait. Finally her name rang out across the hall and the girl took her place on the stool and waited as the sorting hat was lowered onto her head.

Kishen did not know much about any of the houses. All he knew was that his sister was in Hufflepuff, which is where all the apparent nice people went. Kishen was friendly, but when people got in his way, that was a different story, but most people did not get in his way. Therefore, people did not need to worry about it. On his way to Hogwarts, the boy had felt nothing but betrayal and anger. These were the same boats his sister took. The same stairs his sister stood on. The same tables his sister ate at. And it made Kishen mad. How did his sister make the decision not to tell him? What was her thought process? Just why? All he wanted was answers, and he had not gotten any since being accepted into this school. Even though he was feeling all of these things, he still wanted to learn magic. If he didn't want to, he would not be standing in line waiting to be sorted in the first place. There was a part of him that was willing to give up his training for magic, and he did not know why. Was this also what Hilton felt? Did she feel this much desire and confusing all wrapped in anxiety over her future?

There was just so much going through Kishen's mind that he did not hear his name get called. It was not until his name was called once more that he walked up the stairs to the stool and sat down. The Hat was placed on his head. The same Hat that sorted his sister. He only had once request. "Please not Hufflepuff. I'll die if I go there." he told the Hat quietly. He did not want to be in the same house as his sister was. That would only keep him in her shadow and overall ruin his entire schooling career. Kishen knew nothing about the other houses, but he knew that he did not want to be in Hufflepuff. He hoped that he had a different destiny from his sister.

Vegeta Arai stayed practically next to his brother, Jigoku. He knew that Jigoku wanted to be on his own, but family meant that they stayed together, yet he was trying to venture away from it. Vegeta would love to be in the same house as Jigoku, but thought that they were too different to be considered together. Jigoku was a loner, whereas Vegeta was a little more impressible. He watched as his brother's name was called up to the front, and heard the house that it shouted. Slytherin. Yuki was a Hufflepuff, and Ryuu was a Ravenclaw. Vegeta now knew where he wanted to be, but was he Slytherin material? He heard his name called, and he walked up to the podium, the hat lowered down on top of his head. He looked at the four tables, knowing that some were giggling because of his name. Lowlifes, all of them. He never understood why. Vegeta twiddled his thumbs together, looking down as he hoped that he would be sorted soon.

Her whole morning seems to be pack with busy people, her mum getting her luggage ready and her dad was making sure her new owl's cage was ready for a long train travel. She sat with her owl, who she named Dan, at the back seat of their SUV. They were a normal muggle and wizard combo family. They always take advantage of the muggle necessities around them, her parents like the electronics and vehicles at the most. Alec wanted to console her mum as she cried her eyes out while entering platform nine and three quarters but her dad signal not to because they all know that her mum might not let go of her. The goodbyes were hard but she'd became a lady now and needs to learn to be independent, and it will only start once she step inside the train.

The train ride was difficult enough that she hadn't seen her relative that she had been informed her nor she made any friends yet. It was all lonely, except as they travel via boat to a dark and eerie lake. Alec could see her reflection on the water as the moon was full. Once they arrive inside the castle and was gathered in front of all the current students of Hogwarts New Zealand. She almost panicked, her thoughts so deep. Eventually, she managed to snap out of it when the names were being called upon. It must have took forever for her but then, "Maxwell, Alecia." Her formal name was being called and she could feel her cheeks burn. It's not that she hated her name but she was named after her mean grandmother, that was when she started to short her name to Alec.

Either way, she walked to the stool and sat while the hat was being place on her head. Alec didn't quite get how a hat can know your future by picking your house. It was odd but she'd like to think that the hat was only putting people's future in good hands. Alec sat silently and awaited for the sorting hat to shout her new family for the long run ...

Kendrick Warlock, did not want to come to this school. Not at all. He had something else in mind when he first showed signs of magic. Something about dreams and wandless sorcery. It didn't hit him until the letter of Hogwarts from New Zealand came instead of the one from Uagadou. He wasn't an African citizen and his mother did attend Hogwarts in New Zealand. Preferences over individuality. He didn't understand that concept. Still, he wanted to see if there was a way to attend Uagadou. Kamaria, didn't want to let him down, but she was honest with him. The chance of getting into the other school was slim, and it's not a battle she wanted to be fighting for right now. Kamaria promised if given a chance, if there was a way, then she would do what she can to get him placed in Uagadou. That was good enough for him. He would be discouraged if they didn't at least tried. And Kamaria, wanting no part of that on her conscious.

For the time being, Kendrick followed the lot to the sorting area. There was a wait for him. Kendrick played with a stack of cards, shuffling between his hands. It kept him preoccupied, playing with his cards until he waited. It killed time and he would have learn a new card trick as he waited. Then, when his name was announced, Kendrick slipped the cards out of view. There was something he was going to miss out learning because he wasn't going to Uagadou. The way they learn magic was different from this school. More of a reason for him to stay with the cards. Any hand gestured would come in handy when he practice with his cards. And if he ever does attend Uagadou, any hand gesture would help him with his wandless magic.

Kendrick step up to the stool and sat down. He waited.

Why did the sorting ceremony have to be in front of the entire school? Surely it made more sense for the students to be placed into their houses and then join their classmates, than to be paraded in front of everyone like the latest copy of the Daily Prophet. All eyes would be on them as they waited to hear the results, as though it wasn't tense enough already. Over the summer, Mhairi and Lina had done their very best to calm any nerves the youngest Olaf was experiencing, and while he knew in time he would be fine, he was anxietious waiting for the ceremony to begin. How anyone was meant to actually eat any good today though he wasn't sure, but it did look good. Ilija felt as though he'd been waiting a lifetime for this moment to finally arrive, and as he peered through the doors of the Great Hall, trying to hold down his breakfast and the number of people inside, he focused on trying to spot his siblings instead. There would be plenty of time to get to know his classmates and he wanted nothing more right now than to not make a fool of himself. He tried to replay a story he'd written earlier in the week, about how he thought this situation would turn out, although now it was here it was nothing like he'd imagined. Ilija was pulled out of his thoughts as another boy hit him, and the blonde frowned at the arrogance of the student who to no one's surprise was sorted into Gryffindor. He swallowed, aware that wherever he was placed he would be judged for their traits, and first impressions were often important. Once his name was called, Ilija moved up to the hat, greeting it although quickly wishing he'd just sat down, and peered at the floor so he didn't have to look at the sea of students up ahead.

Dymphna had only been at Hogwarts for five minutes and already she'd forgotten all about her worries - even the one about being teased for her name. She soon found out she wasn't the only one with a strange name, anyway. It made her feel at home amongst the other first years. The only thing she really needed to worry about was her personality. She shuffled to the front of the great hall on tiptoes, trying to see over the heads of the kids in front. She'd never felt so excited in her entire life, though there were definitely some nerves mixed in as well. From what she'd read about the four houses, she was pretty sure she wanted to be in Hufflepuff. Slytherin sounded scary, Gryffindors seemed to have only slightly better morals, and Ravenclaws sounded much too intimidating, though she did spot one friendly looking girl sorted there. Dymphna didn't want to be forever punished for the bad behaviour of her dormitory buddies. When her name was called, she wiped her sweaty hands on her robes (embellished with a dozen brightly coloured pins) and sat shakily on the stool. She closed her eyes before the hat was lowered on her head, but still saw the descent of darkness behind closed lids. Hello, she thought, hardly able to breathe for suspense. I'd really, really like to be in Hufflepuff.

Elijah had thought the train ride to Hogwarts had been strange, but actually being inside the castle made him realise that his previous feeling had been nothing in the face of the world he was walking through now. He stared quietly up at the high walls covered in portraits as the group of students was lead along, and wondered if he would be able to stand living here for the next seven years. He would go home for holidays undoubtedly; his parents liked to engage in awkward family events whenever society dictated they should. But he would be living... here. Elijah didn't react as obviously as some of the other children did once they entered the large hall where the rest of the school was gathered, but he felt a little bit astounded all the same. The ceiling was... the sky. Someone bumped into him as he stopped to take it in, but he ignored whoever it was and let a number of students push their way around him in the current of bodies before moving on down the aisle towards the other end of the hall.

His fingers were already itching for the typewriter he had brought with him. It had been a gift from his grandfather only a small time before Elijah had left Scotland, and he had only had enough time to fiddle around with a few sheets practice sheets of type before the machine had to be packed away in his trunk. He wished he didn't have to take part in this welcoming ceremony. He could feel ideas beginning to collect in the joints where his fingers met his palms. The hat began singing. Vaguely, Elijah wondered where the girl he had met on the train had gone, but the thought was soon chased out as people started being sorted into one of the four houses. He watched impassively as each person's face reacted to the word shouted into their ear, and was glad he didn't feel as strongly about where he ended up as some of these kids obviously were. Having expectations was only asking for trouble, in his opinion. When his own name was called, Elijah walked forth out of the crowd of first years and climbed onto the stool to face the rest of the school. He didn't look at any of them; his eyes were fixed on a point at the far end of the hall. The hat being placed on his head was about to know every thought currently sitting in his head, and possibly even more. It was... a terrifying and strangely appealing thought all at once. For the first time since Elijah had received his letter, he held his breath in anticipation of what was to come next.

Rafael could not believe that his parents had sent him to a different school than his siblings. It didn't seem fair to him that his older sisters got to spend their time together whilst at and he was not allowed to be a part of that. It almost seemed as if his parents were punishing him for something. If this were true then he did not even know what he had done wrong this past year in order for them to decide to send him to Hogwarts instead of Ilvermorny. Rafael had fiercely protested going to this school over the year but no matter how hard he tried to convince his parents to let him go to another school instead, they would not change their minds. He had tried literally everything. A whole year of doing the dishes without complaining about it even once; no allowance until his next birthday; babysitting his annoying little cousins whenever his aunt and uncle would be away - nothing had seemed to work. And now it was September and in a moment he would be placed into one of the four houses the singing hat had mentioned in his song. How in the world would a singing hat be able to decide which house was best suited for him anyway? It had said something about trying it on which could only mean that the woman welcoming them would place it upon his head once she'd call him forward. However, that still did not explain how the singing hat would know which of the four houses he belonged in. Why couldn't he just go to Ilvermorny and be sorted into Wampus like his sister? Rafael waited for the woman to call out his name, and when she did, walked forwards and sat himself down on the stool. With the hat now placed upon his head, the eleven-year-old wondered if it was somehow able to understand him.

Paisley wished she could be with Teagan and not in New Zealand. Accepting the letter from this school scared her. She was scared to tell her dad even but her godfather helped her. Her dad was fine about all of it, he just got scared himself as well when Paisley did a surprising magic she can't control. She was currently back to their own house, her dad started to sober up and started taking care of her as well. But her godfather was still keeping an eye on her. There was a lot of changes in the pass but she was fine with it now. The blonde has a lot of support now and not just from her family but from the people who are the same as her as well.

Paisley Aberdeen stood with the rest of the upcoming first years in front of the many older students. She didn't know anyone but according to her godfather that there will be four Maxwell's in the school. It was only a shame that Teagan was transferred to the original Hogwarts. The sorting began and she watched carefully how it was done. By the time she started to get mesmerized, she was called upon. "Aberdeen, Paisley!" Shouted the woman with the scroll. Paisley tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and walked toward the stool to sit on. She wondered how it works. Should she think of something? Talk to the hat in her mind? Once the hat was placed on top of her head, she thought hard. Your world isn't my world. I've barely know it. Please, guide me at least in this school. I've heard Ravenclaw are smart like my friend. I'm smart, could I be out in that house? Paisley thought she was going cuckoo because no one will hear her mind.

Elena Cardosi unfortunately lost her friend in the crowd of first years as they entered the Great Hall. It was very unfortunate for her that it came down to that. And then there was the fact that her siblings were all in other schools. Elena knew that she would not have to wait for long. After all, her last name started with a C. Elena watched as the students were sorted into the four houses, which she did not have much information on them. She did know that her uncle was sorted into Slytherin but she did not know if she was like him. Soon enough, she heard her name. She crossed the flood of students and walked to the front. She sat down on the podium and felt the ancient hat upon her hair. She closed her eyes, hating the attention since she was front and center. She waited for the hat’s judgment on where she would be for the next seven years.

Philip felt Avaria's hand squeezed his own. His mind came about at that moment and looked down at Avaria. The boy was surprised to see the girl at the train station this morning, and he had thought that she was just a normal kid that he had saved before but no, she was also like him. Philip smiled back at Avaria when she did the same. He wanted to assure her that everything will be alright. Although, he can't stop feeling how worried he is with the hat. What if they'll be in a different house? How would Avaria react? They heard her name being called out first and that's when Philip didn't want to let go of her. Slowly, though, they parted their hands and off Avaria went to sit on the stool. It didn't took awhile for her to get sorted as the hat shouted her house, Ravenclaw.

The same house he wanted to be. After the claps and cheer from that area of the hall, he was called next. "Maxwell, Philip!" Philip almost stumbled by just getting up there but he regained himself and sat on the stool. The hat being placed upon his head was awkward and felt wrong but it was the only thing that can judge where he should go for the rest of his seven years in this school.

Elsie searched for the eyes of her brother when she walked into the great hall, awed by the decorations and sheer vastness of the room. This castle was huge! She held hands with Rowan as they came to a stop at the stage and she gulped as she realised that she would be the first of the pair to be sorted. She was usually never first in anything, nevermind being the first to be sorted. She slowly let go of her sisters hand and headed to the stool, her eyes keeping watch, both on Rowan and on Zennon. She could see that her brother was eager to know what houses they would be in. She only hoped that wherever she went, she was able to stay with one of them.

Teuila Kuresa entered the Great Hall, with her first cousin at her side, Natia Kyle. Teuila would be sorted before Natia would, but hopefully just being there like a mother hen would allow her to remain calm, since Natia seemed to be a little on the skeptical side. As she looked around the peers, she noticed that there were a lot of different shades and colors. Then there were the houses. From what the Kyle’s told her, they all had their strengths. Teuila herself did not favor any. She did not care which one she went to as long as she would not deal with bullies interfering with her cousin’s adjusting period without her parents. It had been a year now, but it was still rough, especially for Natia since that was all she had ever known. She placed her hand on her shoulder, smiling gently as she heard her own name called. She spoke gently in Samoan to tell Natia good luck before walking to the podium. She felt the hat go onto her head, and she awaited the judgment, what color she would be. Yellow did look good on her, so she wondered if that was the house for her

The letter to Hogwarts arrived and Misty was over the moon excited to meet new people. It scared her since she knew it was going to be hard work, but her parents had said that there were always people that could help her. Misty was pacing up and down her room and packing her large trunk she had gotten for her birthday. She didn't know what to pack so she packed bits and bobs of everything. Misty didn't even know if she was allowed to take her stuffed animal with her, but she packed it anyway. It was a little stuffed pig that she had gotten from her grandmother a long time ago. Misty closed her trunk and walked downstairs. Her parents were already ready to leave, they didn't want to be late. Misty arrived at the station on time and boarded the train. It was already full with people and Misty was excited. There weren't a lot of people on the outskirts were she lived and her parents home schooled her. That made her group of friends rather small. Misty smiled and sat down in a compartment. Soon she would arrive at this magical school and it would be the first time she would be in a class. It excited and scared her at the same time. When they arrived at the castle Misty was shocked it was giant and there were doors everywhere. It did look nice, but she did miss the hay and sounds of animals everywhere you went. Misty walked into the hall with the other first year and waited for her name to be called. She was so overwhelmed by everything that she had almost missed her moment. ''Misty, Little'' Misty slowly walked to the stool.

Amaya wasn't wide-eyed like the rest of this rabble. She knew what she was here for. What she would do with that time had yet to be determined, but that was just a minor detail. She spotted her newly found cousin as she entered the hall. Sapphire, the Slytherin. Amaya rolled her eyes. She didn't understand her family and their obsession with naming them all after gemstones. If she ever had kids, she would name them something more normal. Alice or something, or Caleb. Something common. She both adored the attention her name brought and loathed it; she wanted to be seen for herself, not her name.

The sorting ceremony dragged until her name was finally called. "Michaels, Amethyst." She rolled her eyes. She preferred Amaya. She walked through the other students and sat on the stool. As the hat slipped over her blond hair, she only had one thought. Can we hurry this up please? I have better things to do.

Elias felt a lot of pressure as he had made his way into the Great hall with his fellow first years. The Styx name was well known at the school and in the community and it made him feel as though he had a lot to live up to. While he was confident he would be able to do and willing to put the work in to get the results yet a small lingering doubt remained. Elias stuffed his hands in his pockets once the group reached the front of the hall and he began his long wait until it was his turn to be sorted. Finally the name Styx rang out across the Great hall and Elias parted from what remained of the unsorted group and took his seat on the stool.

Going to Hogwarts New Zealand was a dream come true, only because she would be with Stefan, Cristian, Camelia and Sione again. She missed them terribly and was afraid that they would lose their lives while they were at school and she would never see them again. It happened with her parents, so she was constantly afraid that someone she loved would leave her, and disappear from her life. It was a constant haunt. She walked into the Great Hall, staying at her cousin’s side. Teuila had been the oldest of her uncle’s two daughters, then she was going to school with the youngest of the Kyle’s. She soon heard Teuila’s name, smiled at the gesture her cousin gave her and watched her be sorted. Soon enough, it was her turn. Natia sighed and walked up to the stool, and plopped down. The hat lowered onto her head, where she could barely see out of it. Well, this was it. What house would she get into? She doubted Slytherin, but at least in any of the others, she would have a sibling there, waiting for her.

The first thing Guiliana thought upon entering the looming castle of Hogwarts was that it was much better lit than she had pictured. The Australian muggle had never seen anything quite so impressive in her life, and she found that just looking at the sites was overwhelming. Closing her doe-eyes she took in a breath, reminding herself that she didn't need to panic. Hiking up trousers that were slightly loose on her waist the ginger girl approached the group, slipping her way into the crowd, trying to get closer to see the festivities that drew the students' attention. There on a stool sat ht. A talking hat. The ginger let her mouth gape, and it continued to do so as slowly but surely students were divided over, and over again. Green, red, yellow, yellow, blue. Each person walked off to their tables. Gadget found her mind rcing, until the first syllable of her last name exited the mouth of the regal looking blonde before her. They were not going to say her full, hard to pronounce, and unfitting name.

"Here, Ma'am!" She inturrupted, hoping she seemed excited rather than nervous, though her rattling knees might have given her away as she took a seat on the stool. The hat fell over Gadget's crystalline eyes which fluttered shut. Ginger locks kept back in a braid were smothered, and Gadge held her breath, not sure if the hat would stink or not. Though she was unaware the hat would know that she worried of it's smell, and whether she would contract lice from wearing it.

Gracen knew much about hogwarts, including the houses and expectations behind each of them, but instead of wondering which house the hat would place him in during the sorting ceremony and wasting the entire trip on the hogwarts express, Gracen instead stared out the window. Focusing on the scenery of the countryside in a distanced, disinterested state rather than thinking about what he would face when he stepped out of the train was less of a waste time to him than worrying for no reason. In fact Gracen remained disinterested even as he walked with the group of his peers into the hall, trying not to show how much he would rather be anywhere else as the group paused in front of a stool where the sorting ceremony would begin. He watched with boredom behind his eyes as students were called one by one, sitting themselves on the stool to have the sorting hat placed over their heads. It did not hit him which house he wanted to be in, or rather which house he did not want to be in until he glanced around the hall while waiting for his name to be called, spotting Hudson at the ravenclaw table and quickly turning his attention back to the students being sorted in front of him.

Wherever Gracen was placed, he did not want to be with Hudson and he was sure of that. He wanted to make a name for himself without the awkwardness of his brother holding him back. Successful because of his own merits that weren't overshadowed by anything or anyone else. He continued to wait for his name to be called, cursing inwardly that his surname was near the end of the alphabet. The crowd was thinned enough for attention to be solely on him as the words 'Worth, Gracen' were finally called out, and this caused him to feel a little more confident as he stepped forward and sat down on the stool. Though he tried to keep his expression neutral while the hat was placed on his head, so he wouldn't embarrass himself as he waited for the hat to decide where he would be placed for the next seven years.

Victoria Matthias walked into the Great Hall, in absolute awe at the scenery. It was even better than her father described it. Words could not compare, really. Victoria brushed her blonde hair out of her eyes as they stared up into the magical ceiling that looked like the night sky. It was wonderful. Victoria could not wait until she was sorted to see what house she belonged in. After all, her mother was a Hufflepuff and her father was a Slytherin. She did not know if she would fit into the Slytherin house since she did look and act more like her mother, albeit unable to handle negative news that well and how sensitive she was. She also fainted at any sight of blood, which was like her dad. Victoria pursed her lips as she wondered. Eventually, her name was called. She practically bounced up to the stool and the hat lowered onto her head. She grinned as she waited for what the hat would say.

Aaren Vyhnal entered Hogwarts New Zealand, knowing that this was the first that her line has been to this school. Her father was in Ilvermorny and her mother was in Beauxbatons. So, there was no telling what house she could be in. Aaren stood with her arms crossed over her chest, seeing each person have their name called. She recognized one of the names being a Chevalier. That was a cousin of hers. Not sure how much of one, but one regardless. She was sorted into Slytherin. Aaren started tapping her foot as she waited for her name to be called. Eventually, her name was called and she made her way up to the stool, perching down and waiting for judgment from the old hat. ‘Just don’t put me where people will irritate me as much,’ pleaded the first year.

Viserys Zhefarovich made his way through the doors of the Great Hall, where his silvery eyes landed on everything. Oh, this was just heaven. He was amazed. He could not wait to be sorted. His father was a Slytherin and a Head Boy here once upon a time. He doubted that he would end up the same way but he was determined to make the best of everything. He stood near his cousin, Aaren, and seemed protective over her but giving her the space she wanted at the same time. After what felt like an eternity, Aaren’s name was called. At clapped at her sorting, before long, it was his turn. He was one of the last considering his surname. He approached the stool and sat down, with the hat upon his brunette head. He grinned a little in pride, just knowing that he could be sleeping in the same dorms that his father was, if he belonged in Slytherin anyway.

Arinna walked into the Great Hall for the second time this year. First was when Ari graduated and now when she was entering the school herself as a student. She let her eyes wander around as if looking for some discoveries that only she could discover. She joined the others as they walked along the middle of the aisle and stopped just in front of the platform where a stool with an old tattered hat sat. Arinna could not help but beam as she listened to the headmistress' speech and beamed, even more, when the hat sang. She almost laughed when some kids were somewhat afraid of the hat. She was not, though. She was even excited about everything. She could not wait to get sorted, settle in her dormitory and start exploring the castle. Sure, the lessons were fun but she preferred to be outside and moving. She wondered if Ari's girlfriend would remember her from the graduation. Shaking her head, she looked back to the front as the woman started calling names to be sorted. She watched as other kids, looking scared out of their pants, walked to the front and put on the hat. Not her. She did not know why but it seemed that she rarely got nervous. Maybe because she was used to doing outside sports. Maybe because her energy did not let her stay still long enough to finish a chapter of a book, let alone a page. Soon enough, her name was called. "Desai, Arinna." She gave the woman a bright smile and a nod as she made her way to where the hat was situated. Picking it up before taking a seat, she placed it on her head as she almost drummed her fingers on her knees because of the excitement. She was too excited that she wondered if she should wait for the hat's decision or not. This thought made her giggle.

"You'll find plenty of adventures in...Ravenclaw!"

Rowan glanced around, her hand tight around Elsie's as they looked around the room. It was crazy, this place. She was used to magic, but this was next level. Her home didn't have see a see through roof or floating candles, though it was certainly giving her a couple of home decorating ideas. Maybe a career in interior design wasn't so far-fetched. She figured she would ask the Headmistress for some ideas on the right kind of spells to use, or maybe the charms professor would be of good choice as well. She certainly couldn't wait to see how the rest of this day went. Elsie was called up first and Rowan immediately looked to Zennon as they both waited for Elsie's how to be called. Ravenclaw, hm, Zennon didn't seem surprised, but maybe a little disappointed that Elsie wasn't with him. Rowan sighed a little as this also meant she would not be in the same house as both of them together, if she was in either at all. She wanted to protect them, but she would have to make do in other ways. Rowan was called next and she breathed a reserved breath as she walked up to the stool and waited for the hat to be placed on her head.
