-----The name Slate is primarily a male name of American origin that means Gray-green Rock. A fine-grained gray, green, or bluish metamorphic rock easily split into smooth, flat pieces.
-----Cato as a boy's name (also used as girl's name Cato), is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Cato is "all-knowing".
[NAME REASONING]
-----Slate's parents aimed for the first letters of the triplets to be the same. They randomly chose the letter and since the blanket, the third triplet was wrapped in had a grayish-green color, they suddenly came up with the slate rock. As for the second name, they wanted something that has a relevant meaning to being knowledgeable hence the name Cato.

-----His siblings call him either Slay or Slatie. Except for the twins who call him the baby-ish "Swate". Friends can call him by his first name as it Is what he normally used to introduce himself.

He is willing to try and learn new stuff as long as he sees them as harmless and beneficial to learning. With positive encouragement from his family, Slate's determination becomes stronger.

-----To be timid is to show a lack of courage or confidence. Slate may be determined but he still gets easily frightened especially when he has to speak or even stand in front of an audience. He is also shy when it comes to meeting new people, especially in public settings and events.

-----Slate has particularly liked the corner table at the inn's dining hall. It is in the corner and the walls do not have windows which means nobody could easily spook him. Except for Lorelai because she crawls under the table.

-----Slate loves Fridays even more now that he is going to Hogwarts. Friday is the ideal day of the week for him to enjoy his reading.

-----Slate has always loved the evening hours. Especially Fridays. Everything is quiet, letting him read peacefully into the night.

-----Slate is not really picky with food prepared for them at the inn. He especially likes sandwiches and some cupcakes with frosting and sprinkles on top.

-----Just like with food, Slate was not really particular with the drinks. What he usually pairs with his sandwiches is a tall glass of fruit juice, whatever is available at the dining hall at the inn.

-----Slate particular likes spring and fall. The temperature is just right for a comfortable time outside. Spring is also the time when the colors are more vibrant after the winter is over.

-----As much as Slate spends the day outside during his favorite seasons, he also likes the cloudy and rainy days. Cloudy to spend some time outside, rainy because of how quiet the world is with only the sound of the rain to keep him company.
[SMELL]
-----Velichor. It is more distinctive and melancholy than the sight and smell of old books, redolent of dust and decayed hopes.

​

-----Born fifteen minutes after the twenty-first hour of April 15th of 2044, Slate Cato Gates' squeak of a cry was heard. He was the youngest triplet born to the new parents, Tyra Wolf-Gates and Jason Gates. He was born five minutes after Sadie. He was born naturally quiet and his parents thought there was something wrong with him. However, they were assured that everything was fine and he was a perfectly healthy baby.

-----The triplets grew up in their family inn along with their aunt, Professor Mallory Corrins, and the inn's manager and like their uncle, Atkin Grayveson. As kids, Slate was the quietest and more likely to stay indoors than out. He prefers his books or helping Atkin while the two would go out to practice soccer. Slate shares a bedroom with Soren who is the oldest triplet and loves to play jokes on him. Slate easily gets spooked which was what Soren would take advantage of.

-----They went to Arrowtown Primary School while having Atkin teaching them some basic magical stuff during the school breaks. With a magical father and a muggle mother, it was important for the triplets to learn and experience both worlds which was the reason why their parents enrolled in a muggle school first. After all, they would be spending seven years in the wizarding world when they reached eleven.​

• SIGNS OF MAGIC •

-----Despite knowing about their father's world, it was still a surprise when the triplets manifested their first magic. It almost happened simultaneously which became a very special day for the family. The whole family woke up from a piercing scream from the boys' room. Tyra rushed in to see Slate, wide-eyed and screaming, as he found himself floating around the room and eventually got himself stuck on top of his bookshelf. Soren clutched his stomach, laughing as it was reasonably hilarious to watch Slate's face. After he was helped down, it was then the boy realized that it was already his magic showing up. Over the course of the next few days, Atkin helped the triplets gain control of their magic as it would raise questions in the inn when they also cater to muggle guests. ​

• GETTING THE HOGWARTS LETTER •

-----With the family leaving in New Zealand all their life, and their aunts and uncles also studying in Hogwarts NZ, it was no surprise when the triplets got their Hogwarts letter as well. Their owl swooped in the dining hall one early morning and discreetly dropped three envelopes next to their mother's plate. Their owl knew the drill and had been trained to bring multiple letters at once, to avoid suspicions. They were fast, getting in and out in just seconds. While other owls normally get treats right away, theirs would just fly straight to Atkin's window where the man had food and water waiting for them by the open window. The day became eventful as they went to Diagon Alley for their school stuff. ​

• BUYING HIS FIRST WAND •

-----It was the first step to doing things on his own and with Tyra encouraging Slate to go in the shop alone, Slate stepped inside, relieved to see few people in the shop. If he were to make a fool of himself, at least there wouldn't be a bigger audience. He was glad to be assisted by a helpful assistant. What makes the process interesting was that it took two wands with lots of screaming before he found his wand, Curly 9 1/2 Inch Sturdy Reed Wand with Boomslang venom Core. How did he know it was the wand for him? It let out a mist of his favorite color along with a scent that could only be found in libraries. (Head on to One Step On My Own to read more.)​

[SORTING POST]

With his brand new Hogwarts: A History to his chest, he followed Soren and Sadie into the massive hall. What he read in the book was exactly how he imagined it though better. He looked around in amazement from the high ceilings to the floating candles. However, at the sight of the older students staring at them, he felt embarrassed, prompting him to hurry closer to Soren, almost bumping into his brother. Sadie was beyond herself, the delight evident on her face. Soon enough, they were lined up in front of a wooden stool with a tattered hat on top. The headmistress started reading off the names, Slate spacing out again. It wasn't until Soren nudged him that he looked to the front that he realized it was already his turn. He did not realize that Sadie was not there anymore. "Gates, Slate." The headmistress called again. He gingerly stepped forward and sat on the stool. His wide eyes were only on Soren now, he could not even dare to blink, afraid that his brother would disappear. If he looked around, he would faint. He could already feel his cold sweat as he waited forever for the hat to speak out.

"Hmm, there are a lot qualities of all the houses here...You could probably manage just fine in any of them, but I can see there's one you want, and I can see you doing well there so.....Ravenclaw,"

Slate's heart was pounding as he slowly made his way to the Ravenclaw table, gingerly taking a seat at one end. He glanced at Sadie seated at the Gryffindor table and gave her a weak smile. He quickly looked to the front to see Soren about to get sorted. His knee was jumping in anxiety as he waited for the hat to decide. It did not take long though as it shouted Gryffindor. Slate did not know whether to cry but his lips were trembling as both of his siblings were in the same house. It would have given him comfort if they were in different houses. His eyes never left Soren, hoping the other boy would meet his gaze.

[THOUGHTS ON THE HOUSE]

Slate was actually fine with his house. Although he was sad that his siblings were not with him, he tried to see the positive side of it. All of them were in towers, higher levels, which meant they were still close to each other. He would still see them in classes and Soren promised they would sit with him at the table until he settled in and made some friends from his house. He knew there was a reason why the sorting hat put him there and he had promised his Mama he would try his best to discover what it was.​

[FIRST YEAR LIFE and THOUGHTS]

If it wasn't for Alexander Woodlock and the warm welcome of Ajaccio Skey, Slate would have been lonelier than ever. He had settled fairly and was glad to see a few familiar faces that he had met before the term started. He had promised his Mama that he would try and so far, he was doing great. He had found a friend in Rose Archer who was also a twin and a librarian for a father. Her Aunt Mallory was also there and she would be his professor in the next semester. His classes were going great and day by day, he was surprised to have learned a lot in class and about himself. He never thought he would be able to summon a broom on his first try. He felt more confident with his spells in Transfiguration and had a bit of a struggle with Potions. He had joined a club with Alexander and he was now part of the Brotherhood.​
