This isn't really a complete absence, but I wanted to explain what's been going on, in case it's beneficial to anyone else to know about what I've been dealing with.
4 times in the last month, I've gotten an email about people accessing various accounts of mine and changing the passwords/emails associated with them. First it was Gmail (which thankfully didn't actually let them in) then Amazon (which did, but luckily they somehow decided not to buy anything, which they absolutely could have, which is terrifying), then DropBox (I have NO idea what was done with that but uh boy I hope my pictures aren't being used to catfish now) and this week, my Origin account was... not just accessed, but pretty brutally taken over.
I got a couple of emails on Wednesday saying that the email address and password for my account had been changed. Luckily, the email about the email changing had a link for "this wasn't me change it back!" otherwise I would have been COMPLETELY lost. Once I got back into the account I was able to see the recent activity, and somebody had been having a great time playing my games for TWO ENTIRE WEEKS before they messed around with anything that notified me. They had also tried really hard several times to buy an expensive Fifa game, but luckily they hadn't been able to access my paypal. They had also changed the security question somehow though, and it took hours of chasing up customer service to regain full access to my account. They had fully intended on keeping my account by the looks of it though, they had changed the username, filled in (i really hope this was the truth because it's very funny to me) their own actual name and even selected favourite games. They were really settling in to keep my account.
After a bit of digging, I finally found out what happened. My email address, and an old password I haven't used in about 5 years, but also haven't phased out everywhere that I DID use it yet had been posted on a big list of leaked email + password combinations, and I'm right near the top of the list, the easiest of easy targets. I've been trying to lock down everywhere that had that password, but I'm never going to remember everything I did five years ago, so yesterday I had to go in to the bank and just cancel my debit card and order a replacement. This has taken pretty much the entire last 4 days to get sorted, and even now I don't know if I'm going to have to deal with MORE account theft, even if they can't access my money anymore.
So uh, that's where I've been the last few days, I've barely had the time/energy to stick my nose into the site and look at news posts, and if I vanish again it'll unfortunately likely be because of more of this.
If anyone else is COMPLETELY spooked by this whole prospect (believe me it's considerably more unsettling to go through than it sounds, I've barely slept in 4 days) https://haveibeenpwned.com/ is a great resource, it'll check your email address against its databases and let you know anywhere your information may have been compromised. If you're in a paste - what happened to me - change all your passwords FAST and keep your eyes on your email.
