'Until the very end': The Future of HNZ

Dear HNZ members of new and old,

HNZ is about to head into its second semester of its 51st year, and celebrate it's 21 OOC year of life. HNZ was started back in 2005 and has likely been the longest running Harry Potter RPG in all the internet. The site has existed for 21 years and lasted 8 years post-Zetaboards and has gone through numerous changes and updates. The site has had two skin changes, we've moved servers and there have been 9 headpeople and 6 or 7 Minister for Magic. HNZ has always been a great place to improve writing, to have explore characters, to explore your creativity. The decision which has been made hasn't been made lightly, but HNZ is also a product of its own success and running the site is now a much more burdensome task for all involved.

The admin have been in discussion, weighing up the choices that we have, monitoring activity for the last year, which has been steadily declining, and deciding what is best for the future. Both for ourselves and the GMs as people with lives outside of the site, and for the site itself. HNZ is a mammoth of a site to run, with the time crunches, the lessons and the other activities, all which have helped make HNZ stand out as an RPG website, but that do require a level of attention and commitment to make sure run smoothly.

This decision isn't one we come to lightly, it isn't one that we necessarily expected to make, but it is the one we have come to.

As of June 2026, HNZ will be closing its doors. This means Y51 will be the last IC year of the school, with this being the last semester. We will be having the birthday celebrations, a last hurrah for the life the site has lived and then moving to close down by June. Given this, we will still have lessons, but their importance will be much less, most end grades can be decided between yourself and the professor of the class. Valentines Celebration and the Graduation will be held, as well as one last End of Year Feast. This will be an opportunity to give some characters a bit of a round off. This last semester will place a much greater emphasis on just interactions and fun things, rather than lessons and responsibilities.

We understand that this will be disappointing and it is a sad moment, for anyone whose joined us later, or who were particularly enthused by the characters they currently had. But the end of HNZ doesn't mean the end of those characters, and whatever head canons you take forward with those characters are valid.

In June we will move the site to read only, so you'll continue to access things, and we'll make sure that things like all previous sortings are accessible. We'll sort the Yuleball threads, Valentines Threads and Halloween threads, so you can find those in one location each with ease, and we'll finish one last ACCIO (consider this THE reminder to post your pictures one last time). HNZ will remain accessible, so you'll be able to re-read the threads for the foreseeable future. If you have questions about any of the process, then we are here to answer them.

I joined HNZ in very late 2007, and it has been a really big part of my life for the past 19 years. I have currently spent more of my life on HNZ than not, which is truly wild. In that time, I've seen so many changes, so many progressions. This fills me with a deep and great sadness, HNZ has always been just an easy place to come back to and I know that I will feel the loss of it. I want to take a personal moment to thank all of the GMs, all of the members who had Professors, Shopkeepers, club leaders, prefects Head Masters, Head of houses etc. for all of the work that you put in at various stages of the site's life. Whether you were a shopkeeper for a semester or many, the contributions made by all those on the site can never be devalued. You made the site what it is. You made the site last as long as it did.

I also would like to take a moment to thank Donna, and Liv, both of whom have been previous admin, who have served the site above and beyond what was ever expected. To Nick, our resident coding and everything extraordinaire, who has built us and helped sustain the site in ways that at the site's beginning felt absolutely wild. The Gradebook is a great example of that, the quidditch system, just amazing things. To Alicia, our founder who put in the work right at the very beginning and launched the site back in 2005. This place wouldn't have been possible without her.

And finally, before I sign off, I'd like to thank Cyndi, our other current resident admin. Cyndi, you have done a great deal for this site, countless hours and dedication. Working with you has been a pleasure and an honour and the stories we could both tell about the craziness which has also followed it. The site would've been nothing without you, and I know others will join me in that sentiment.

Right, Professors be sure to check out the professor area soon, where we'll have more information on the final semester. Applications will be open until IC Valentines days, so be sure to get any and all last minute apps in to round off characters or give them traits that you'd like before things close off. Accio members I will be speaking to you shortly, and we'll move to make this the last best Accio ever, and be sure to invite all back for our last birthday celebrations.

Know that we all have a heavy heart with this; however, we are closing and shutting down on our terms, for a site which has lasted much longer than I think any of us thought possible. The friendships made with the site can never been downplayed, (special shout out to Anna for me who was at my wedding) and I know a lot of you will keep in touch in other places, doing other things, writing still amazing characters.

The magic we created here will live on even as the site officially closes.

All was well,

Emzies
On behalf of the admin

I'll add my own word of thanks to Emzies and Cyndi for keeping things going as long as they have as a team, and to all the GMs through the years who do the thankless work which keeps things neat and tidy.

But, most of all, thank you to every person who has made HNZ a part of their life, who has shared their creativity with strangers who become friends & even family. HNZ has been the better for every plot, every new character, every shout, every bit of spam, and - above all - every drop of energy and love you have given to it.

Given the parts of you all I have had the privilege of bearing witness to here, I can only imagine what tremendous gifts you are to the places, people, and communities to which you belong outside of HNZ - and I hope a little piece of HNZ might journey with you for all the goodness you will be a part of long after it ends.

Man, I really don't know how to put what I'm feeling into words.

HNZ's been part of my life since I was 16 years old, and I'm 33 now. For the longest time it's felt to me like one of the last bastions of the internet era I grew up in, a kind of quiet online home away from the noise and mess of social media. A space to socialise and create that isn't focused on Producing Content, or burdened by the eyes of Everyone You've Ever Met IRL. A place where we just do what we do because we love it, the way the internet used to be.

I've made some of my deepest online friendships here, learned SO MUCH about art and writing, and just had the absolute best time developing plots and characters, participating in events, getting silly, and digging into really serious plots. HNZ has been such a tremendous outlet and community when I desperately needed that, and without it I dunno how I would have gotten through some parts of my 20s.

Seeing this place go is hard, and I don't think it's really sunk in yet. May not sink in any time soon period. Between being shackled to the HP IP and the userbase aging into busy adulthood I've had my worries about HNZ's decline, but somehow I didn't think it was coming this soon. All good things must end, but man, HNZ has been so, so good while we've had it.

Thank you so much, Emzies, Cyndi, and Nick, for everything you've done to make this place what it is and keep us going through thick and thin. You guys have given so much to this community, and you deserve all the love in the world for it. As painful as the decision must be, I hope you guys all enjoy having some well-earned rest and free time once running HNZ isn't on your plates anymore.

HNZ will always be so, so special to me. Thanks to everyone who's made it that way. Arohanui ki a koutou katoa.

I'll opine more on what HNZ has meant for me in an upcoming birthday topic :r :p but I don't want to miss an opportunity to thank each and every one of you for helping to make this community what it is. In the same way that a house is not a home without some love and personality infused into it by its owners, a website is not a community without love and personality infused into it by its members. I've had the pleasure of RPing with all (or very nearly all) of you in some form or another and have seen the varied styles of writing and the love you've given to your characters. I hope you all continue writing in some manner or another. Much love to you all. 💕

I know I haven't been on HNZ in awhile, and even the times I have been recently have been sporadic. But HNZ was and always will be such a big part of my life. I still hear cool names or see cool faces that I think "yes that would be good for a character".
From learning what the heck RPing is, what coding is (not that I ever did any), how much work goes on behind the scenes, to even learning how to write. Not only that, but man the community here has always been the best part that keeps you coming back. Thank you all for everything, I love you all, and I hope we can stay in touch.

Okay, I do have a practical question actually. You talked about making hidden forums public etc (LOVE this) but what's going to happen with usergroups - will characters stay in the usergroups they were in when the site closes, or will the deactivator eventually turn HNZ into a sea of light blue? It'd be pretty sad seeing everyone inactive, even if it is true.

Thank you Emzies, Cyndi, and everyone who has run HNZ over the years, and for keeping it going for as long as you have. I'm still processing that it's actually closing but that aside I feel really proud to have been a part of the HNZ community and to have been a GM, even if my temporary mod break has now clearly become permanent. I'm going to miss HNZ but I have made a bunch of great friends here who feel it too so I think we're going to be okay. Love to all of you

Just thought I would pop in and say that I had some really, really lovely times on this section of the internet, and I have made some very long and meaningful relationships here too. I've found love, moved countries, been through so much with so many of you and whilst it has come to an end (or is coming to an end) I know that I will always have those good memories of the times I was here. I learned so much from so many of you and I know that I will continue to keep making memories with the friends I made along the way - which would not have been possible without HNZ.

So thank you for all of the good things I got from knowing you.

User groups will stay how they are.
I think there's some talk about helping people put inactive accounts where they should be at the end, too.

Can we make Tristan minister for the bit

On a serious note, I really am unsure what to say to this. I kind of felt it might come, and it brings a mixture of emotions for me. I'm upset about it and I know I will miss this site. I joined in June of 2016, the closing of the site falling with my 10 year anniversary is a strange sensation. I put so much effort, time and love into my characters and had so much fun RPing with everyone. But for the past few months (years, maybe) my muse and energy were steadily declining. I had less free time, occasionally felt constrained by the site setting (there's only so many things you can do at a school) and for me the controversy surrounding HP and JKR was having an increasing impact on my enjoyment of HNZ even though it was its own separate thing for me for a long time.

Overall, I had such a lovely time here and made so many friends. Thank you, admin and GM for all the work you put into making this such a fun space on the internet for this long.

Hello all,

Logging in with one of my favorite characters that I made and accomplished lots for her. I came across the site when I was 14, and now I'm 35. This just meant HNZ has been a part of my life, whether I was active or not. Despite leaving countless times because life happens, it's just been so easy to go back. It's like a second home for me. I have shared bits and pieces of my life here, made friendships that transcend time and distance. I have always treated HNZ as another world that I have helped create in some way, and to hear it shutting down honestly brings lots of emotions. HNZ has been my outlet for my writing creativity, helped improve my English communication skills, which eventually helped me get ahead. I may not have been around, but I always see HNZ as just there, one tab away, and I'll be back to creating new characters and lives. Sadly, it will have to come to an end, and I'm hoping that when time allows, we'll get to say hi to each other again. The Internet's a powerful thing, and I believe we'll bump into each other. Be it in Discord, Facebook, or another RPG site.

Again, to everyone who has created stories with my characters, thank you so much for being a part of my HNZ experience.

I think there's some talk about helping people put inactive accounts where they should be at the end, too.
Hoping this would be the case. I would love to see my characters in their colors again.

With lots of love and well wishes,

Arle (OOC of 34 characters)
