Charlie remained a devoted Auror for a long time, convinced that they were doing the right thing; protecting people just how they had always wanted. As time passed though, they began to see cracks in the organisation. It all came to a head when following a spree of violence caused by the Scitorari, a standoff with Shale Night led to Charlie being forced to fire the killing spell. Taking a life took an immense mental toll on them, especially when they did more research and learned about Shale's background; the ways she had been failed by the people and systems around her at every turn. Seeing the direction their life could easily have taken had their own adoption gone as badly as Shale's had, Charlie left the force, no longer willing to police people in need, and instead turned their attention to mental health work and victim support, following in their adoptive mother's footsteps. In an unexpected turn, the publicity around Shale's case led to a letter Charlie had never expected to receive - their biological mother making contact. After being abandoned as a newborn, Charlie had never felt any real urge to meet their biological mother, but meeting the woman after so long and learning how young and helpless she had been at Charlie's birth softened their heart, healing something they had never realised until then was broken.
