Matt had surprised himself by agreeing to help out during the duelling tournament. He wasn't a very big duelist himself, but he had often enjoyed watching the duels. Once the two competitors seemed to be ready for the duel to begin, Matt pointed them to their places before speaking to them. "Welcome to your first round of duelling. The victor of this duel will be able to go on to the next round." Matt said. "If you break the rules, you'll be disqualified. Once you're unable to duel, you've lost." He explained. "When you're ready, bow to your opponent and get started." Matt said, stepping back to let the duel begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Sydney had been looking forward to this all year. She'd considered plenty of other avenues for putting Michael Newton in his place after his insolence over the past year, but after seeing he had the gall to sign up for the tournament again, she knew this would be the most satisfying. "I'm going to wipe the floor with you," she said in a low voice, barely inclining her head enough to count as a bow before fling her first spell. "Incarcerous!"

Michael had signed up for the dueling tournament again out of their sheer prospect of messing with Sydney. And thankfully, the dueling gods had answered his prayers. If she was going threaten his life, the Gryffindor figured he ought to go out in a blaze of glory. He had a few tricks up his sleeve for the match and wondered how long it would take either the professors to disqualify him or Sydney to murder him right then and there.

He let Sydney start the match, quickly blocking her spell as he pulled out something from his pocket. "Scourgify," he said, sending the spell towards her feet and pulling out a bubble wand, waving it in the air. "I figured I'd help you "clean the floor" by making it soapy," he giggled.

Sydney knew she shouldn't have expected Michael to take things seriously, but she still couldn't believe he would bait her so blatantly. She was ready to wipe that stupid smirk off his face. "I'll show you clean," she muttered, shooting a jet of water straight at Michael's face with an aguamenti charm.

Michael wasn't surprised by how peeved Sydney was at his tricks. He let the water hit his face, arms held out, before wiping his eyes. "This will make cleaning much easier for you. But maybe you need a little FIRE," he exclaimed as he attempted to to set off some muggle magic version of fire in his hand, but it quickly didn't work, instead landing on the floor. Michael stomped out the remaining flames with his feet before shrugging. "Incendio," he called, doing a little twirl at the end.

Sydney had no idea what idiocy Michael was doing this time, watching him with a curled lip as he fussed with some other prop he'd bought. At least he finally cast an actual spell this time, she thought, casting a flame-freezing charm with a dismissive flick of her wand and watching the fire lick around her harmlessly. "Are you finally going to actually try now? Or are you worried you lose again if you take this seriously," She sneered, throwing a Stinging Hex back at Michael.

Tilly had decided it would be a good idea to watch the other duels this year. Even if she didn’t win her own, maybe she would learn some tips and tricks. She was especially looking forward to seeing Sydney duel, as one of the ferocious leaders of the SDA. Tilly had heard that the duel Sydney was in last year was fun to watch.

The Hufflepuff learned just why it had been fun soon enough. She tried to maintain her composure, but she was soon in stitches as the Gryffindor boy, Michael Newton, made an absolute fool of himself. Sydney was obviously the better duellist. Tilly laughed loudly when Sydney hit Michael with a face full of water, and then Michael returned fire, if slowly. She had to admit this was highly entertaining. Tilly looked around, wishing Juniper was back with her snacks. She could certainly use some popcorn right now.

Michael rolled his eyes at Sydney as he blocked her spell. "What are you talking about? I let you win," he spewed before shooting out a cheering charm at Sydney. "Maybe you could use a little bit of positive vibes."

Sydney all but snarled at Michael's comment, raising her wand to block his next spell. He was still toying with her and Sydney was fed up with it. "Graviatus!*" She said, sparing a moment to grin at the memory of Ava teaching her the spell last year. It'd taken Sydney awhile to master it, but weighting down Michael's limbs would certainly make it easy to eviscerate him later.

Michael frowned when Sydney didn't reply and just sent back another spell. He blocked it and frowned. "Maybe some flowers will you cheer you up," he said, using another muggle magic trick and pulling flowers out of his sleeve and decided to levitate them over to Sydney instead of shooting a defensive spell, as this was dueling in his own way.

Lysander had heard a lot about the Sydney vs Michael duel the previous year, and he'd not wanted to miss out on this years. He sat on one of the benches to watch, and soon found himself in hysterics over the Gryffindors antics. A lot of duels were very serious, but this one was not. At least, for half the party involved. It was like watching a comedy in the Muggle Studies classroom, and Lysander would be lying if he said he didn't enjoy seeing the SDA leader get so worked up about it. "Woo, Michael!" He shouted, applauding the older boy's efforts, if someone could call it that. "That's how you duel!" He continued, though he knew he could have never done that against Juniper. Not at the risk of losing spectacularly.

Sydney could hear people in the crowd starting to laugh at it set her teeth on edge. "Fine, if you want to be humiliated so badly," she snapped, furiously batting the flowers away and raising her wand. "Evanesco!" She said, directing the vanishing spell directly at Michael's pants.

Michael heard a spectator cheer him on and realized it was Lysander. Giving a goofy set of finger guns to his friend, the Gryffindor completely missed blocking Sydney's spell and felt a sudden breeze around his legs, looking down at his pants, or lack there of. In the process of disappearing his pants, Sydney made all of his tricks fall to the ground, and there was a sudden clatter of marbles, cards decks, and a stick of beef jerky. That was just a snack for later. Having worn his favorite boxers that day, Michael struck a pose. "Aww, if you wanted to see my knickers, you could have just asked," he teased, having no interest in ever dating Sydney. "Langlock," he shot back, wondering how much longer Sydney would let him go on like this.

As much as he teased her, Amelia wanted her big brother to win his duel. Obviously. She cheered him on even though she didn't know half the spells they were shooting at each other. The girl he was fighting seemed kind of mean, but she supposed Michael was a pest. Amelia laughed uproariously when Michael lost his trousers. She gagged openly at her brother's last comment.

Sydney couldn't hide her disgust not only at her own spell's success, but at the collection of garbage that spilled out from Michael's now vanished pockets. "Do you ever shut up. Confirgo!" she snapped, knocking Michael's spell aside with another shield before throwing the spell at his feet. With any luck the explosion would knock that dumb look off his face along with him off the stage.

Emily was certainly intrigued by this duel. She hated seeing Sydney so annoyed. But she was impressed by her girlfriends talent. She would make sure to tell Sydney so later. She doubted Sydney was the type to enjoy loud displays of appreciation.

Michael was feeling breezy in just his boxers and caught a glimmer of a marble that had rolled into the middle of the platform. Knowing that it was a dangerous tripping hazard, he started to walk forward before feeling a flightless feeling as everything moved in slow motion. The marbles went one way, his cards another, and himself straight back into the wall behind the platform. Hitting his head, he immediately lost conciousness and crumpled. Within 30 seconds, he moaned, coming to, and rolled over on his side, noticing blood from some cuts on his hand. He noticed Amelia nearby and giggled to himself before turning to his sister. "Wanna play 52 card pick-up?" he laughed, seeing his cards all around the chamber before moaning again. "Are you happy, Townsend?" he mustered, still laying on his back as he let out a low moan to let her know she had successfully done what she'd threatened in her letters.

Matt had been a little alarmed by the vicious way the Slytherin girl had been dueling. He stopped the duel once the boy was knocked out and helped him up. "You should go to the Hospital Wing." He said to the Gryffindor. Then he turned to the girl. "Sydney Townsend is the winner." He declared, feeling sorry already for whoever the girl was up against next.

Sydney had a satisfying few moments after Michael was appropriately launched off the stage, followed by a few seconds of blissful silence where Sydney was almost tempted to check if was alright. The feeling immediately dissipated when Michael started talking again, and Sydney could only shove her wand angrily in her pocket. "Only if you finally learnt your lesson," she snapped at him, satisfied when Professor Ward saw fit to send Michael off to the Hospital Wing. He probably needed he brain checked more than usual after the duel today.
