Matt had surprised himself by agreeing to help out during the duelling tournament. He wasn't a very big duelist himself, but he had often enjoyed watching the duels. Once the two competitors seemed to be ready for the duel to begin, Matt pointed them to their places before speaking to them. "Welcome to your first round of duelling. The victor of this duel will be able to go on to the next round." Matt said. "If you break the rules, you'll be disqualified. Once you're unable to duel, you've lost." He explained. "When you're ready, bow to your opponent and get started." Matt said, stepping back to let the duel begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Juniper couldn't believe she had been paired with Lysander right off the bat. It was almost like the professors knew of their rivalry and treated this like some joke. She quickly took the stage and set herself up, barely bowing before throwing out an aggressive spell. "Incendio!"

Lysander had been looking forward to this day. He wanted that title back, and he'd been practicing as much as he could in the lead up to the tournament. Now that he was finally here, it was a different feeling entirely. Part of him felt like he still needed to warm up, and another part was eager to simply get this particular duel against Juniper out of the way. He took to the stage, matching her bow with more of a short nod, and raised his wand, too slow to get his spell out first. "Protego!" He shouted, watching the searing flames wash over his shield with a grimace. He swiped his wand back towards Juniper when they died down, firing back with a babbling curse.

Juniper smirked, even as Lysander blocked her spell. This was going to be too easy, and she just needed to enjoy the ride. Blocking his curse, she gave her wand a twirl before sending back her next spell. "Confundo," she said, hoping this would be quick and easy.

Lysander huffed at Junipers showy display, though it gave him time to prepare another shield. He fired back with a jelly-fingers curse, hoping to see her wand twirl right out of her hand.

Juniper blocked Lysander's spell, feeling another rush of adrenaline like she did when she got a few bludger hits in a row. "Obscuro," she said, hoping to incapacitate Lysander in some way.

Lysander was too slow to raise his wand in time, and felt the blindfold's fabric settle over his eyes before he could do anything about it. The chamber was plunged into darkness, and he pawed at the material, unsuccessfully trying to pry it off. He panicked, and waved his wand wildly toward where he'd last seen Juniper. "Stupefy!" He yelled, barely making out the flash of red light through the black fabric.

Juniper was glad to see Lysander unable to block her spell but was quickly surprised by his spell attempt. Watching it hit the floor and then shoot above her into the ceiling. "You know, for it to be really be dueling, you have to try and hit your opponent," she laughed, sending back Petrificus Totalus.

Adorah was worried about Juniper's match, as she knew her sister was out for blood. Feeling bad for Lysander (kind of), she took her seat in the stands, watching as the duel commenced. She didn't really care for her sister's trash talking. "Be nice, June!" she shouted, hoping it didn't distract her but also worried about her being perceived as mean.

Lysander heard the sound of his spell colliding with something, briefly thinking that he'd hit his mark as he hadn't heard Juniper call out a shield charm in time, though he was confused when he heard a follow up collision, followed by Juniper taunting him. He groaned inwardly. "I didn't want to embarrass you by winning too soon, you know?" He retorted, conjuring up another shield in front of him when he heard her shout out her next spell. All her bravado at least helped him get a sense of where she was, though someone else calling out made it all the more disorienting. He jabbed his wand straight ahead, toward where he'd heard her shout her petrifying curse. "Expelliarmus!"

Juniper was surprised that Lysander managed to block her spell even with being unable to see. How was that possible? What a jerk. Briefly distracted by her sister yelling at her, she blocked the Gryffindor's spell and stuck her tongue out at Adorah before sending back at jelly brain jinx.

Lysander held his wand out in preparation. "Have you lost yet?" He called out into the dark, unsure if he'd succeeded until he heard the telltale rippling of a shield coming into existence. He had to quickly conjure his own very possible shield charm ( :r ) when he heard her shout another jinx, the brief magical circle of force protecting the majority of his general front, as shield charms were prone to do. Deciding enough was enough, he took his own wand to his head. "Diffindo." He incanted, severing the side of the blindfold covering his eyes, and with it a small lock of hair. He blinked away at the sudden onslaught of light as his vision readjusted. "Phew. I didn't want to miss the look on your face when I win." He taunted Juniper with a small grin, before scrunching up and tossing the blindfold at the Ravenclaw.

Juniper rolled her eyes yet again at Lysander's antics. She was determined not to lose. She was not going to be a one-shot wonder. "Petrificus Totalus," she sent again, hoping to end the duel rather quickly.

Lysander blocked Juniper's spell with another shield, trying to pass it off as effortless despite it being quite obviously an effort to do in time. "Supercilio!" He shouted, casting out his eyebrow-growing charm to try and obscure her vision.

Juniper was surprised Lysander was still standing, seeing as he usually wasted all his energy on being obnoxious. The Ravenclaw moved too slow in her next attempt to block and felt a rush of air hit her face and pressure coming from her forehead. Reaching up, she moved the rogue hair encroaching her vision. "You're so annoying," she shouted before sending back some Gubraithian Fire.

Lysander triumphantly punched the air as his spell was a success. Finally! He'd been mentally racing Sully to get to use it in a duel properly, and he cackled at the sight of Juniper with rapidly growing eyebrows. So much so that he was too slow to defend himself against her next spell. His eyes widened as his uniform burst into flames, and he hastily tore off his shirt, flexing his rippling beater muscles from all that Quidditch practice, and stomped on the burning cloth to no avail. Right, Gubraithian. That stuff burned forever. He switched tactics and kicked the fiery shirt toward Juniper in an attempt to distract her, before following it up with a fur-growing spell. Why stop at eyebrows?

Juniper didn't have time to deal with her stupid eyebrows since she felt a hit of joy seeing Lysander start to burst into flames. But somehow, he managed to not completely be covered in fire, and Juniper growled. This was just as obnoxious as last year's duel. Alarmed by the fire coming her way, she took a step back as the next spell hit her and her skin quickly grew fur. Knowing that throwing verbal curses his way would get her in trouble, she scratched her neck before sending back a slug vomiting curse. She didn't care if it hit him and he kept going - as long as he looked like a fool.

It was becoming increasingly difficult to recogise Juniper. She was looking more like a Sesame Street character than a person, with the fur growing out of her skin and the crazy eyebrows. He felt amused and generally...lighter, like the duel was finally getting some of the negativity he'd felt over the last year out of his system. It helped that Juniper looked so ridiculous. Laughter welled up in his chest, though as he was suddenly struck by another spell, that laughter was replaced with a different, unpleasant sensation in his chest. He clasped a hand over his mouth, already feeling a slug begin to surge up his esophagus. "Merlin-" He began, before throwing up a slug into his cupped palm. He couldn't believe this. Again!? This was by far the worst spell he'd ever been hit by. He knew he should have kept some treacle in his pocket just in case this happened, but he couldn't be sure if that was cheating. His brows furrowed and he tossed the slug at Juniper. "You can have this back!" He shouted. Another slug escaped his mouth, and he coughed to clear out the slime, fighting the urge to throw up another. "Unngh. Amphibia Eructo!" He called, firing back with the frog-vomiting charm he'd seen Sydney use in previous duels. If slugs were this bad, he had to hope that frogs were worse.

Juniper could feel her skin starting to itch rather badly, but she knew wasting her energy on stopping the spell wasn't worth it. She needed to save all her focus for Lysander, glad to see him hit with that stupid slug spell. She didn't know who created it, but she was very, very thankful for them. As a slug was tossed in her direction, she squealed and retracted one of her legs, forgetting to block again and feeling something come up her own throat, her stomach suddenly weighing her down. "Are you f-BLECHHHHHH kidding me?" she shouted in between vomits of what felt like ginormous toads. Grimacing at the creatures near her feet, she stepped over them, careful of the slug, and sent back a knee-reversing hex.

Lysander beamed when Juniper was hit by his spell. He spat out a slug, as triumphantly as one could under the circumstances. "How's karma taste?" He taunted, trying to ignore the taste in his own mouth. He raised his wand in preparation to defend himself from her next spell. "Pro-HUUURK." He yelled, doubling over to throw up another slug, while his wand spat out a pathetic puff of smoke in its failed shield charm. He felt his knees wrench themselves around to the other side of his leg and staggered across the stage, his feet sliding through the slug slime he'd coughed up so far. His left leg went one way and his right leg went the other, dropping him dangerously low into doing the splits, if not for him throwing out a hand against the ground to support himself. He used his free hand to wave his wand around, and tossed an antler-growing hex back Juniper's way.

Juniper felt another toad come up, watching as it fell onto the ground and hopped back to hang out with its friend. This had to be so much worse than the slug spell. At least they didn't have legs. She watched as her opponent fell to the ground, feeling vindicated by how ridiculous he looked. And just as that thought crossed her mind, she once again failed to block Lysander's spell, feeling a massive headache. "Ahhh!" she groaned loudly, feeling her hands rise as the antlers came out. She fell to her knees and then looked back up at Lysander. She was sure this was the most ridiculous duel the school had seen. It was no longer defensive spells - they were just making each other look really dumb. Frustrated, she managed to hold up her wand again, the finally finished growing antlers making her rather dizzy without her eyebrows already obstructing her vision. Juniper wasn't sure how much more she could take, but the Ravenclaw knew she couldn't lose. It would be way too humiliating at this point. She sent back a conjunctivitis curse, knowing that he had still managed to compete with his vision obstructed before. But maybe this time, he would be tired enough to just give up.

Lysander was too busy trying to keep himself upright to stop and appreciate how much Juniper now looked like Hogwarts' latest cryptid. His knees buckled, and he couldn't move out of the way in time to avoid her next curse. "Gah!" He yelled, squinting painfully. He could feel his eyes swell shut, leaving him in moderate darkness for the second time that duel. "Furnunculus!" He continued, waving his wand in the direction he'd last seen Juniper. He clenched his teeth afterwards, holding back another slug that was creeping its way up. This duel was a mess, and despite the shape Juniper was in, there was a very real fear that he might not pull through. He couldn't see, he couldn't stand, and he could barely get his words out without throwing up. He had to keep trying. Juniper didn't deserve that title - his title. He couldn't deal with another year of her gloating about it.

Juniper wasn't quite sure how she was still hanging on. She was now covered in fur with vision encroaching eyebrows, and with the antlers, she knew there was a huge possibilty a photo of her might end up in next year's edition of Accio. As long as they included her sick Yule Ball look, she knew she'd get over it. Besides, it was more important to focus on Lysander, and as things were slowing down, she giggled as he was hit again. Unfortunately, the Gryffindor was refusing to give up, and Juniper felt another toad coming up from her laughter, spatting it out in her hand before throwing it at Lysander. That unfortunately led to her starting to dodge but being hit with another spell. If she thought the fur was itchy, the boils made it oh so much worse. Tears in her eyes, she felt a sudden surge of adrenaline. She had to win this. Losing again wasn't an option, not after usurpring Lysander's title last year. It would be too embarassing. She shot back a jelly-fingers jinx, trying hard not to stratch the boils on her stomach.

Lysander felt something hit him in the face, and judging by the surprised croak, realised Juniper must have thrown a frog at him. She was stealing his tactics like she'd stolen his title. The Gryffindor was practically sat on the stage floor by now, his knees bent awkwardly under him and his eyes swollen shut, like some kind of newborn bird. All he could do was listen and hope for the best. He kept an ear out for her next spell, and the moment she began to speak, he threw himself to the side of the platform in an effort to dodge, coming to a halt with one leg dangling dangerously off the side. He scrambled to get it back onto the stage, and waved his wand aimlessly in the air. He'd lost track of where she was now that he'd rolled out of the way. "...Marco?" He called out, trying to listen for footsteps, or another frog being puked up, anything that would give him a hint of where to aim next.

Juniper couldn't take it anymore. She didn't know if she could rid herself of all her ailments with one spell, but the itching and wretching was becoming unbearable. "Finite," she said, exhausted by all the wear and tear her body had gone through in the last few minutes. She felt the boils and antlers disppear. Her eyebrows shrunk, but she could still feel fur on her appendages as well as a slimey throat. Ready to block Lysander's retaliation, she was surprised to see him still fighting. "Professor! How is this allowed?" she called to their proctor. He was on the ground, looking rather pathetic. "Incendio!" she sent back, wondering if this time the fire would actually take, seeing as he didn't have another shirt to tear off.
