Second Years, Lesson One

Landon stood at the door to the Herbology greenhouse with a box of earmuffs in his arms. It would be his first lesson today teaching the second years and he was very excited. He was so excited that he could barely sleep the night before and he hoped his students felt the same way. "Please, take a pair." Landon told the second years, passing them each a pair of earmuffs as they entered the room. The professor didn't want his students to pass out during their first lesson and would make it his duty to look after each and every one of them. The man was very prepared for today's lesson and decorated his classroom with still pictures of muggle plants to add some colour to the room and make it feel like his old home back in America. He also hoped that it would make his students feel comfortable which were his number one priority.

When he was sure that everyone had arrived and took a pair of earmuffs, Landon put down the box and walked to the front of his classroom, ready to begin. "Welcome to your second year of Herbology! For those who may not know, I'm Professor Carter." Landon paused and smiled around the classroom at all the familiar faces from the year before. "Your second year is a rather exciting year, yet can be quite difficult, and involves a lot of hands-on work with Mandrakes. Can anyone tell me what a mandrake is?" The man looked around the room and pointed to a student sitting at the front of the room. "A mandrake is an ugly plant that you can chop up and use in potions." they said confidently, making the professor laugh. He already loved his class and they weren't even halfway through the lesson yet. "Yes, a mandrake is pretty ugly indeed! 5 Points to your house for making me laugh.

"Mandrake, or Mandragora, are not in fact plants but are roots. They have special magical healing properties and are used a lot in hospitals like St. Mungos."
Landon tapped the board behind him with his wand and a piece of chalk began to draw a detailed picture of a mandrake. "They look a bit like a mutated baby, and are definitely not the prettiest to look at, but we'll be dealing with them a lot this year, hence the earmuffs I have handed you all. The mandrake's cry is fatal to anyone that hears it and without the earmuffs you'll all be passing out one by one. You will be bringing these earmuffs to every lesson. If ever you forget them, it's alright because I'll always have spares." The man looked around at his students, some of which were getting quite bored with the lecture. Looking at his wristwatch, he noticed it was almost time for them to leave. "That will be all for today." he said, hoping his students had enjoyed his first lesson with them. "Next lesson we will be doing a lot more than sitting around and listening to me talk. You may all go. Don't forget the earmuffs."

The fact that Herbology was in the second half of the year for her this year had upset Prim greatly when she’d realised, since it was one of the only classes she even cared about at all. She eagerly grabbed a pair of earmuffs when she made her way into the greenhouse and she looked around at the cute decorations with a large smile on her face. She loved being in Professor Carter’s greenhouses, she considered him the best professor in her opinion. She settled quickly into her space, paying close attention as the professor talked about what they would be doing this lesson, mostly dealing with mandrakes this year. She loved those ugly little beggars. She raised her hand immediately when he asked what they were and she was excited when he called upon her. "A mandrake is an ugly plant that you can chop up and use in potions." She had to emphasise they were ugly, even if she found them interesting, because it was one of the most identifiable things about them. They looked like ugly babies. She couldn’t believe they would actually get to handle mandrakes this year, and quickly readjusted her earmuffs. She didn’t think she would need them for this lesson but they were probably theirs to keep. She definitely wouldn’t be forgetting them for this year, no way. She didn’t want to be the one to pass out - or die! - this year. With a soft smile, she gathered her things as class was dismissed, already looking forward to the more hands-on work next time.

Jonah took a pair of earmuffs and shuffled into the Greenhouse, looking across his classmates and trying to decide where he wanted to sit. After seeing where @Elijah Edogawa ended up sitting, he decided to shuffle towards him and sit on his side which would be farther from the professor. Herbology, as a subject, wasn't something he minded. But he didn't particularly like the Herbology professor so he'd never really been keen to attend the class. As the lecture continued, Jonah tried his best to jot down notes on a piece of parchment - in Japanese, because he's given up on writing them in English. He wasn't looking forward to dealing with the plants that looked like a creepy baby either. This was going to be a long semester.

The earmuffs as they walked into the room was pretty telling of what plant they would be working with this semester, but he knew anyway, because he'd heard it from Sayuri. He wasn't surprised, it was a risky plant to work with, which took them well into their later years learning, but it was one of the easiest too, as keeping safe from it was fairly simple and even at the ages the plants were likely to be, he doubted they'd be mature enough to actually kill someone, at least that was what he was counting on. He took a seat away from everyone else, having decided earlier in the week he would be avoiding any and all friends for the foreseeable future because he hated the grades he'd gotten last semester. How as he supposed to prove himself with E grades? He wasn't on the Quidditch team - he simply couldn't risk it. When Jonah sat next to him though, he smiled at him, glad that he'd chosen to sit with him. He might be fobbing off everyone else, but he could never, and would never wish his brother to leave him alone, and actually if he was sitting with Eli, perhaps that meant he didn't hate him as much as Eli initial thought he did? Soon the class wrapped up, and he made a mental note to keep his earmuffs handy, and also make sure Jonah remembered his too, so he didn't have to seek his brother out in the hospital wing.

Lilith wasn't exactly excited for Herbology but she wasn't not not excited either if that made any sense. It wasn't her favourite lesson but not her least favourite either. So she arrived to the lesson in time and took a seat giving a smile to everyone already around there. She took some notes, feeling kind of bad for the plant that was being called ugly. In her opinion the plant was kind of cute in all of its ugliness, so it wasn't fair to call it ugly. It simply couldn't change its appearance, she'd make sure to treat hers with love and care. As the lesson wrapped up Lilith packed her things waiting by the door for her boyfriend to catch up so they could walk to the next class together.

Eurydice stared at the earmuffs held between her two fingers in disgust. She didn't know whose ears these have been on so, she set them on the table and refused to touch them again. She was not at all fond of Herbology, which meant she was not at all fond of the professor, and she was especially not fond of the idea of taking care of ugly plants. Especially one's whose cry could be fatal. While she liked some horror movies and the like, the mutated baby was very much unpleasant to look at. And they were dealing with that for the whole semester? Wonderful. When the professor dismissed them, she left immediately, leaving the earmuffs on the table. She was just going to have to ask her brother to get her some earmuffs.

Daiki walked into the herboloyg greenhouse and took a spot in the room, making sure that Kairi would be able to sit in the spot next to him. He glanced at the professor as the man got started and felt rather bad for the mandrakes they would be covering with that descriptor. He then took a couple of notes from what the professor was saying and then headed out of the room when the professor then wrapped up the lesson. It was a pretty short lesson and he made sure to take a big note of the fact he needed to remember the earmuffs to the next lesson.

Herbology was one of those subjects that Eoghan thought bridged the gap between the magical and muggle world. There was necessarily anything magical about tending to plants, but their uses were certainly interesting, especially when it came to making potions. The Ravenclaw cared less however for the actual growing of the plants, and would have preferred to just see more of their uses. He made some notes as the professor told them about an ugly plant they'd be learning about this year, although he wasn't sure how fun it was going to be if they had to look at that for every lesson. It reminded him of someone, but he couldn't exactly pinpoint whom. At the end of the lesson he packed up his things and headed out the greenhouse after Lili, glad once again they got to share their lessons together. It would be strange next year if they had a different schedule.

Susie had missed Herbology classes. At first, she’d thought she might find them a bit slow, seeing as how she knew so much about plants already - but Professor Carter had a way of making everything exciting, even if she’d heard it before. And it turned out she didn’t know everything. You wouldn’t have caught her admitting it, but there were some pretty basic things she’d been getting completely wrong. Her uncle must have been afraid to criticise her potting technique. He was a bit like that - too kind to be honest.

Mandrakes weren’t a new plant to Susie either, although she’d never been allowed to handle one before. That was probably for the best. If she didn’t have her earmuffs glued to her head, she was liable to lift them up just to see what would happen. Maybe she still would. They had nurses here, right? What was the worst that could happen? And how cool would it be to say she’d survived a mandrake’s cry??
