@Oswald Brambleheart vs @Conan Elliott

Killian might not have been able to duel when he was a kid - due to his giant genes, this was the next best thing. He did wonder how dueling was in Hogwarts New Zealand versus the dueling that was over in Durmstrang. Only time would tell. This duel, he was monitoring a couple of second years. He doubted that either knew enough that would be impressive, but regardless, one had to begin somewhere. "Choose opposite ends of the stage. When you are ready, bow to your opponent, and begin. Whoever wins will advance." Killian took a step back and folded his arms across his chest to witness the chaos.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Oz was pretty keen to duel, it wasn't like he wanted to hurt any of his classmates of course but he knew he had a lot to prove, what with his size and all. And they would actually let him duel despite being part-goblin, though he really wasn't put at any real advantage by it when he was still learning the basics of magic. His biggest advantage was possibly being harder to hit, as long as he was fast about it. He nodded politely at the professor - like him, another part-being though clearly on the opposite end with being a giant as opposed to a goblin - before bowing to Conan. He didn't know the other boy well but he seemed alright. Still, he was hear to try and win, and he was quick with a "petrificus totalus."

Conan was just a little jumpy as he picked his end of the duelling platform. Of course, he wanted to do well, but he also couldn't help but feel as though it was horrible to try and hex someone else. That was the whole point of duelling, yes, but he still felt guilty about doing it. But he still wanted to see what would happen, see if he could actually make it past the first round. "Good luck," he offered with a smile, giving Oz a bow as instructed. Then he raised his wand, only just managing to actually block the first spell heading his way. That would be have been embarrassing if he had been knocked out so quickly. "Everte Statum!"

"...thanks, uh, you too," Oz replied, quickly pulling up a shield charm. He wasn't sure if he had much resistance to spells, that seemed to be more of a giant thing. Besides, his size meant that spell would easily send him flying off the stage and out of the duel. He begrudgingly thought of Audrey's favourite spell and sent a trip jinx back.

Conan was just a little unprepared for the counter-attack, almost squeaking as he had to quickly dart to the side to avoid being hit by the trip jinx. The last thing he wanted was to end up tripping off the platform and falling rather ungracefully on his face. But he tried to compose himself as he reorientated his aim back to the other second year. "Expelliarmus!"

June wanted to see some duels, mostly her ''competition'' so she could see what kind of spells they used and how they were, what their soft spots were. So the duels she could watch she did. She watched the small boy she didn't knew the name of from her class, also an hufflepuff so irrelevant. Also Conan and wondered what to expect from him. She quietly sat down and had an notebook beside her in case she quickly wanted to write something. But had no idea of the professor would say something from it. She took a good look, wondering who would win.

Conan was pretty good at this, and Oz respected the Gryffindor boy's tenacity. But he'd put in a bit of practice and his own reflexes were pretty good too, so he quickly got up a shield charm to block the spell. He'd need to keep putting pressure on if he wanted to win, so he cast back a "tarentallegra!" hoping it would catch him off balance enough to disarm him.

Audrey hated that she wasn't able to duel yet, though of course she hadn't mastered enough spells for it to be really fun. Still, next year couldn't come soon enough. In the meantime, though, she would go watch some of the duels for some inspiration. And Oz was annoying, but he was still her family and even though she'd gladly beat him in a duel she still wanted him to win his, particularly when she saw him use a trip jinx. She wasn't going to cheer, especially because of his weirdo ears being able to pick it up from a distance...she'd just sit and watch with great investment.

He was, at least, determined not to get knocked out in the first round if at all possible. So he was going to try his best, desperately trying to concentrate as he clumsily managed to get up a shield just in time to protect himself. But he actually had to stop and think for another spell to use, mind almost blanking for a second before a spell finally popped into his head. "Rictusempra!"

Oz tried to duck, make himself a little shorter still, but the spell grazed the top of his head and before he knew it, he was laughing. He held his stomach with one hand, the other desperately clutching his wand. He wasn't ready to give up, he had to keep fighting for Hufflepuff's sake and to show that he wasn't a child, even if he was giggling like a little kid now. "Eh...heh...expelliarmus!" he managed to wheeze out, holding onto his wand for dear life.

Conan couldn't help the slight grin when his spell actually hit the other boy. Maybe he wasn't so terrible at this, even if he was sure one spell hitting was not cause for great celebration just yet. So he was trying not to get too ahead of himself, keeping calm (somewhat) as he managed a shield charm before raising his wand to send back a quick Petrificus Totalus. Hopefully with the fact the other boy was laughing he wouldn't be able to protect himself, or that was the hope anyway.

Oz knew he was very much on the back foot. His stomach hurt from laughing, and it was stopping him from being able to shield quickly, meaning he'd have to dodge more. At least his size vaguely came in handy, even if it had backfired on the last attempt. He scurried out of the way of the spell as fast as he could, eyes watering as he barely held back giggles. And swear words, between the laughs. "Lo...ha...locomotor mortis!" It was perhaps the fastest he'd even spoken since coming to Hogwarts.

He liked to think he was ahead, he'd gotten in one good spell and now he just needed to finish things off. Unfortunately, Oz was still putting up quite a fight and still managing to avoid his spells. As well as keep casting his own. As he blocked the next spell, part of Conan just wanted the other boy to give up already. But he dared not say that out loud, trying to keep his concentration for just a little longer, "Expelliarmus!"

Oz was being stubborn and totally not out of the writer's misguided attempt to make Hufflepuff vaguely relevant in this tournament even if Conan totally had his number. He just barely dodged out of the way, the laughter meaning he had to completely forgo shield charms, and shot back a jelly legs jinx, breathlessly.
