@Ares Kuya-Tine vs @Harper Alston

Hiro had quite enjoyed proctoring the duelling tournament the previous year, so he had graciously accepted to do it again when he had been asked. He had always enjoyed duelling so it was rather interesting for him to be able to watch over the students duels. He smiled as he stood there, looking between the two participants. "Hello and welcome to the duelling tournament for this year." Hopefully, it was going to be a good year as well. "The victor of this match will be moving on to the second round, but please, as always, do try and keep it clean. Any dirty tactics and you will be disqualified." This might just be for fun, but he knew how seriously some students could take it. "But if you both understand, then please face your opponent and bow and then you may begin. And good luck."

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

If last year's tournament had been about proving to herself that she could win, this year's competition would be about proving that she could duel. Harper knew it was a distinction that wouldn't make sense to anyone else, but she didn't care. She was doing this for herself. She wanted to know that she could successfully duel without dodging spells, or disillusioning or supersensory-ing herself.

Harper started to question this approach, however, when she saw who she was paired with for the first round. Ares had been the one to end Flynn's run as dueling champion, which likely meant he would be formidable opponent. At least she knew she had a few tricks up her sleeve if worst came to worst. Harper smiled cheerfully at the head boy as she stepped onto the platform, hoping to lull him into a false sense of security. "Hey Ares! Good luck," she said as she bowed. When she straightened, however, she didn't raise her wand. Instead Harper maintained a bland smile, her wand arm dangling by her side, even as she focused on Ares' own wand. Accio wand. They had practiced wandless, non-verbal summoning charms during DADA last semester, and she could only hope she had mastered it.

Ares was more than ready for another dueling tournament to take place. He had been so close last year, and was keen to knock the victor out again. He stepped up onto the podium, nodding as the professor went over the usual spiel, and raised an eyebrow at the Gryffindor's cheerful demeanour. He didn't say anything as he spoke to her and bowed, and raised his wand in front of him as they were told to begin. He wanted her to go first, and so before he could even think, he instinctively cast a shield charm, beaming as his opponent did in fact decide to act first. Perfect he thought as he non-verbally casted the disarming charm her way.

Harper couldn't tell if she had failed to cast an adequate Summoning Charm or if Ares had blocked the spell. Regardless, it clearly had no effect, which meant she had to be ready for a counterattack. When it came, Harper silently conjured a massive solid-backed wooden chair. In preparing for this year's tournament, she'd spent some time thinking about ways to play to her strengths, one of them being transfiguration. Of course, the problem with that branch of magic was that you generally needed an object to transfigure in the first place, and the dueling platform was devoid of any such items. But Harper thought she'd found a solution to that.

As she'd expected, the chair — it was more of a throne, really, considering how big it was — easily shielded her, and the Disarming Charm bounced off its wooden back. Harper didn't have much time to admire her handiwork, however, as she quickly placed a non-verbal hover charm on the chair and hurled it towards Ares. She hoped that if the chair-turned-projectile didn't knock him out or sweep him off the platform, that it would at least injure him.

Ares raised an eyebrow, a little taken aback at the sudden appearance of a large throne-like chair that had blocked his spell. He knew she would've had a plan with this though, so kept on high alert, not at all surprised when it began hurling towards him. "Evanesco!" he exclaimed, panicking a little too much to be able to perform that non-verbally. The chair had completely disappeared, yet he still jumped out of the way instinctively, before sending a bat bogey hex Harper's way.

Harper was disappointed to see the chair vanish, and not just because it was the largest object she'd ever managed to conjure. She'd had some fun plans for turning it into yet another obstacle for her opponent to deal with. At least she could always conjure another one later. Plus, even if the tactic hadn't worked the way she'd intended, it seemed to have caught Ares off guard. Hoping to capitalize on this momentum, Harper quickly cast a non-verbal Shield Charm before silently shooting off a Canary Transfiguration Hex. It was quite difficult to keep hold of your wand when you were busy transforming into a bird. She would know.

Ares was more than ready for Harper's next spell. He was quick to put up the shield charm and block it. He really wanted to win this and was going to stay focused. The teen sent the conjunctivitis curse her way, knowing it wouldn't do her any good if she couldn't see him.

Jordie was not about to miss Ares' duelling match. Wearing one of the scarves he'd stolen from his boyfriend, Jordie found a good spot to watch, waving a little Slytherin flag he'd made happily, biting his lip to keep from cheering as the duel went on. Merlin, Ares was just so cool. Jordie sighed dreamily, spinning the stick of the tiny green flag between his fingers as he stared, smiling so hard he was sure his face might split.

It was uncomfortable, having to stand still while spells were thrown her way. However, Harper had made a promise to herself that she wouldn't try to dodge any this tournament. She wanted to win with magic alone. She silently cast another Shield Charm and watched as Ares' spell bounced off of it. Then she flung a Blasting Curse at the platform beneath his feet. She wasn't going to move. But maybe she could force Ares to.

Ares blushed as he saw Jordie waving a Slytherin flag at him. He loved how supportive his boyfriend was, especially when he thought all of the weight on his shoulders. As Harper sent another spell his way, he silently cast another shield charm, lucky as the spell almost hit him. He then took a brief pause to re-collect himself before sending the severing charm straight at her chest.

It was pretty clear that something had distracted Ares, though Harper knew better than to try and look for the source of the distraction. Whatever (or whoever) it was, she just hoped they would keep it up. Ares seemed to pause, and Harper wondered if he'd felt the effects of the Blasting Curse through his shield. Maybe she needed to up the ante with an even stronger spell. She quickly blocked his attack with another non-verbal Shield Charm. Then, remembering the way Professor Haden had managed to make a car explode in class, Harper aimed her wand at a spot on the platform just in front of Ares. "Expulso!"

Ares stayed focused as Harper blocked his spell, and raised an eyebrow as she tried to destroy the platform in front of him again. He was quick to block it however, and silently sent a stunning spell her way.

As soon as the incantation left her lips, Harper was on the move, taking several steps back and raising her wand. The last thing she wanted was to get hit by flying debris from her own spell. That turned out to be a needless worry as Ares had blocked the curse. Though Harper was disappointed, her precaution did allow her to get a Shield Charm up more quickly. She watched as a red jet of light — a Stunning Spell, it seemed — bounced off it. It, along with Ares' other choices during the duel, suggested he favoured OWL-level spells, which was reassuring. Still, Harper knew she couldn't get cocky since even a lower-level spell could end the duel. With a silent flick of her wrist, she cast an Incarcerous Spell, sending thick coils of rope flying towards Ares.

Ares could tel the stunning spell was far too easy for her to block, and he just sighed a little as she did. As ropes began flying out of the end of her wand, Ares almost had to jump out of the way, but he didn't, as he managed to send up a shield charm to block her spell just in time. She was moving all over the place, but Ares didn't want to let her think that was a good idea. He narrowed his eyebrows before sending the hardening charm her way. That would definitely keep her stationery.

Harper wasn't surprised when Ares blocked her spell. She expected it, even. What did surprise her was his choice of counterattack. She distinctly remembered Professor Haden telling them that it was forbidden to use the Hardening Charm on another person since it could kill. Harper silently summoned a Shield Charm, just barely deflecting the attack, before glancing over at Professor Aoki. She really hoped he was paying attention since she didn't particularly want to die today. Harper then pointed her wand at the ropes laying on the platform near Ares and with a silent sweep of her wand, transfigured* them into a writhing mass of venomous snakes.

*Technically not a spell that they explicitly learned in class, but second years are supposed to have mastered inanimate to animate transfiguration. I can change this to a switching spell or something else entirely if this is deemed against the rules.

Ares was quickly under the impression that the hardening charm had scared her. She had blocked it though, and it was starting to annoy Ares that she kept being so successful. As she decided to turn the ropes into snakes, Ares couldn't help but panic a little. He pointed his wand at them. "Evanesco!" he exclaimed, making them disappear. He then narrowed his eyes at her, silently sending the blasting curse directly towards her chest. She was definitely making him angry now.

To Harper's satisfaction, Ares seemed to be less than pleased with her use of transfiguration in the duel. It suggested that her strategy was working. Of course, he kept vanishing all of her creations before they could do any real harm, but if she could continue to keep him on his toes (and keep him angry), then maybe he would finally slip up. With this in mind, Harper silently conjured another solid-backed chair — and watched it explode in front of her. She instinctively ducked, raising an arm to shield her face as wooden shrapnel pelted her. Thank god she hadn't made the chair metal. Harper immediately fired back a non-verbal Confundus Charm before taking stock of her injuries. She wasn't bleeding, as far as she could tell, but she could tell that she'd likely earned several bruises. At least this was better than getting hit straight on. She couldn't be sure, but she thought he'd aimed the Blasting Curse directly at her. Ares, it seemed, had no qualms about murdering his opponents.
