Matt had surprised himself by agreeing to help out during the duelling tournament. He wasn't a very big duelist himself, but he had often enjoyed watching the duels. Once the two competitors seemed to be ready for the duel to begin, Matt pointed them to their places before speaking to them. "Welcome to your first round of duelling. The victor of this duel will be able to go on to the next round." Matt said. "If you break the rules, you'll be disqualified. Once you're unable to duel, you've lost." He explained. "When you're ready, bow to your opponent and get started." Matt said, stepping back to let the duel begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Harper's eyes had lit up when she saw who she was paired against. Though dueling helped satiate her thirst for athletic competition, it wasn't nearly as fun as most sports. Dodging hexes wasn't exactly enjoyable, after all, just stressful. That changed when you had a good opponent, one who didn't take things too seriously. Last year, Terrell had been a much more fun competitor than Brooke, and Harper was willing to bet Skylar would be more like the former than the latter. Besides, if Harper didn't make it to the next round, she wanted her best friend to.

After listening to the proctor's instructions, Harper withdrew her wand and stepped onto the platform. "Good luck! But not too much luck," she said with a grin. Best friends or not, she was still eager to win. Harper bowed and quickly shot a Bedazzling Hex toward Sky, figuring that if the other girl was temporarily blinded, she'd have a better chance at winning.

Having forgotten to sign up to the Duelling Competition last year, Skylar was more than excited for this year's rounds. Although she didn't think she'd win, she thought it would be fun to give it a go anyway, and that thought was only emphasised as soon as she saw who she'd been paired up against. She couldn't believe that out of everyone possible, she'd been paired up against Harper, but she didn't mind since she was glad that at least her first duel would be against someone she knew, and someone she knew she could have fun with.

After listening to the rules, Skylar turned to her friend, giving her a slightly exaggerated bow before grinning and taking out her wand. Her mind had immediately begun wondering what spell to use, but she was too slow, as Harper shot out the first spell. Not expecting it, she barely had time to jump to the side before it would have hit her. "Woah, no need to show off!" she teased Harper as she quickly shook it off, before deciding to stick to the basics as she shot a stunning spell back at her.

Harper was a bit disappointed that Sky managed to dodge the spell. Harper had practiced it a couple times before the duel, and she'd been eager to see if she could get it to work. A stunning spell came her way, and she let her muscles guide her, stepping out of the path of the red light. Maybe dodging was bad form during a duel, but she knew her physical reflexes would always be faster than her magical ones. Harper grinned at Sky's comment. "I was just trying to dazzle you," she said, unable to resist the pun. "Stupefy!"

As Skylar saw Harper move out the way of her stunning spell she couldn’t help but grin, knowing her friend was using her athletic skills well in this duel. She’d have to make sure to keep up, but she also wanted to try some more spells, so when Harper threw a stunning spell in her direction, she quickly pulled up a shield “Protego!” She said, a bit more hurriedly than usual, but just in time, as the spell collided with her shield. Grinning at her Harper’s pun she couldn’t help but resist teasing her right back. “How about you try dazzle me with some dance moves instead?” She grinned, hoping it would put her off a bit. “Tarantallegra!”

Harper leapt to the side, dodging the spell. "You know I'm a terrible dancer," she said, frowning dramatically, partially as a joke, but also because Sky's spell come a little too close for comfort. Maybe she should start throwing up shields as well. "I have an idea..." Harper said before shooting a jelly-fingers curse at Sky. "Loser has to get the winner ice cream before the next round!" It was a good thing the kitchens were so close by.

After Harper dodged her spell yet again, Skylar grinned, enjoying the duel even though they seemed relatively well matched. She was about to respond to Harper being a terrible dancer when Harper mentioned that she had an idea. Knowing it was probably just a distraction tactic Skylar tried to focus but couldn’t help herself. “What is i-“ she hadn’t even finished her question when she saw Harper cast the spell but didn’t have time to react. As it hit her, she barely struggled to keep hold of her wand as she realised her fingers no longer has the strength in them as usual.

“Harper!!” She yelled out in surprise, before knowing she has to continue the duel before Harper could send another spell towards her. She barely struggled to hold on to her wand as she thought of the most basic of spells, so just cast a simple stupefy towards her. As she cast it she immediately knew it wasn’t strong or even going in the right direction but there was no harm in trying to keep duelling anyway.

Harper hadn't really expected her attempt at distraction to work, so when the spell actually hit Sky, she was nearly as startled as her friend. What was even more surprising (and kind of impressive) was that Sky had managed to hold onto her wand. As she processed the situation, Sky sent a stunning spell back, and Harper summoned a shield a second too late. It didn't matter. The spell shot overhead, missing her and the shield entirely.

Harper didn't waste any time in retaliating. "Expelliarmus!" Hopefully that would send Sky's wand falling from her fingertips once and for all. Even as she cast the spell, Harper tensed up, ready to move at a moment's notice. She couldn't afford to be taken by surprise again.

When Skylar saw her spell sail far above Harper’s head, she wasn’t even surprised, her fingers felt like jelly and she was mostly just impressed with the fact that she was barely even holding onto it in the first place. As she watched it go above Harper, she hardly even registered the next spell coming out of Harper’s wand, and only realised it hit her as she felt her wand finally leave her hand. Glancing back at Harper she grinned, because although she knew she’d lost now that she didn’t have a wand to fight with, Harper had been heaps of fun to duel against, and she was glad she lost to her out of all people. “Good job Harper!” She grinned at her best friend, before realising what losing to her now meant. “Ohh but that means I have to get you an ice cream now doesn’t it...” she added with a mock pout.

Harper couldn't help her triumphant grin when the spell hit Sky, though the moment was ruined when seconds later, Harper had to duck to avoid getting hit by the flying wand. "Thanks!" she said, beaming at Sky's compliment. "You did really well too. You nearly hit me with that dancing spell," she admitted. It was a good thing she didn't actually get hit because that definitely wouldn't be a pretty sight.

After retrieving the fallen wand, Harper waved her own over Sky's hands. "Finite. Here," she said, holding out Sky's wand for her to take. Harper grinned as Sky remembered the ice cream. "Yes, I want a scoop of cookie dough and chocolate covered in sprinkles." Firing spells was draining, and it would be a good idea to get some food before the next round. "I'll go to the Kitchens with you, but if we run into any house elves, you have to do the talking." Even after three years at Hogwarts, Harper still found the creatures kind of creepy, and well, there had to be some sort of "punishment" for the loser.
