Matt had surprised himself by agreeing to help out during the duelling tournament. He wasn't a very big duelist himself, but he had often enjoyed watching the duels. Once the two competitors seemed to be ready for the duel to begin, Matt pointed them to their places before speaking to them. "Welcome to your first round of duelling. The victor of this duel will be able to go on to the next round." Matt said. "If you break the rules, you'll be disqualified. Once you're unable to duel, you've lost." He explained. "When you're ready, bow to your opponent and get started." Matt said, stepping back to let the duel begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

The last duel had been a drawn-out affair, and Harper knew a decent amount of luck had gone into her victory. Still, she approached the dueling platform with confidence, glad she had at least one win under her belt. Hopefully her (admittedly very limited) experience would also give her an edge in this duel. She'd lucked out and was hitting Terrell, who had received a bye last round. That was definitely preferable to going up against one of the other second years who had already proven themselves by securing a win.

"Hi Terrell!" Harper was glad she was up against one of her nicer housemates, and though she didn't know him well, she already felt more at ease in this round than the previous. She half-listened to the professor's instructions before bowing. As soon as she straightened, she shot a "Stupefy!" at him. Though she was well-rested after the break between rounds, she wanted to avoid another lengthy duel.

Hair slightly messier than usual and his fingers curled tightly around his wand. He climbed onto the platform and greeted his opponent with a reserved smile. "Hey Harper, how are you?" Terrell said as they got into their positions, he felt somewhat nervous as this was his first duel but Harper had already competed in the first round and would undoubtedly have the advantage for it. "Good luck!" He said, although he did feel he might be the one who needed the luck.

Giving a small nod towards the Professor before quickly scanning around to see if any of his friends had joined to watch. The moral support would be nice, but he couldn't see them in his first brief glance around. He quickly drew his attention back to the duel as a stunning spell was coming his way. "Protego!" A shield absorbed the stunning spell and when he was sure the spell was gone, he lifted his wand again and said, “Tarantallegra!”

"Thanks, you too!" Yup, the vibe of this duel was definitely different from her last one. Terrell blocked her first spell, and Harper leapt to the side to dodge the one he threw. The spell was unfamiliar to her, but she didn't like the sound of it. It probably had something to do with tarantulas and while she was not afraid of spiders, she imagined a magical one could likely do some damage. "Expelliarmus!" If she made it past this round, maybe she'd use the break to quickly glance over the spells listed in their DADA textbook.

He blocked the disarming spell, he had to otherwise he'd loose his wand and he was going to need it to continue in the tournament. His opponent was ready to duel, not chat, it seemed. Terrell, sometimes overly-chatty when nervous felt he had to fill the silence with something. "Er, I never know what to cast. How do you decide what spell to go for?" Terrell asked, his mind blank on what to use next. "I suppose, Rictusempra!"

Harper had half-expected Terrell to block her spell; he'd already proven he was quick with the shield charm. What she did not expect was his question. She decided not to answer immediately, instead stepping out of the way as soon as he launched yet another unfamiliar spell at her. Where had he learned all these spells? Had she somehow missed a DADA lecture? "Everte Statum!" she cast, hoping it would push him off the platform. "Just go with your gut?" she suggested with a shrug, deciding that it probably wouldn't be wise to reveal her own strategy to him. Not that it was complicated — she'd decided to take the straightforward approach of just casting spells that would knock her opponent out of the tournament immediately. "Maybe you should do lumos next," she joked.

He made the quick decision to dodge the next spell which had been a good call. "There are just so many different spells to choose from," he said, with a bit of a sigh. He snorted at Harper's suggestion, "Nice try. Are you trying to win or something?" Terrell looked at Harper, deciding to make a bid for her wand. "Expelliamus!"

Harper observed that her last spell had forced Terrell to dodge instead of putting up his usual shield, so she made a mental note to try the spell again. But first she had to duck out of the way of his disarming spell. "Not at all, I'm just trying to help," she said, pasting on her most innocent smile. "Everte Statum!" For the first time this tournament, she was starting to enjoy herself.

Fortunately, Harper wasn't taking herself too seriously and Terrell could have a bit of a joke with her in-between trying to hit each other with their magic. This time he blocked her next spell. "Are you telling me that you are partial to light sensitivity?" Terrell joked, he had noticed through observing his opponent’s actions that she had not yet managed to block a spell. He cast something next that wouldn't make her so agile. "Petrificus Totalus"

Hmmm maybe she should save her bantering for after she cast her spell. Clearly she'd given Terrell too much time to react. Once again, Harper stepped to the side, turning her body away from the spell. His earlier comment about there being a lot of spells to choose from had given her an idea. She aimed at his hand. "Accio wand!" Harper had no idea if it would work, but she was curious to see what would happen. "Why don't you cast it and find out?" she challenged playfully. She did have to wonder if anyone had ever cast a lumos spell so powerful they'd briefly blinded their opponent.

Terrell blocked the Accio spell. In this duel he'd learnt that he was reasonably good at blocking. "Nice one. I hadn't thought the summoning spell was a duelling spell. I'm still not going to try lighting up the tip of my wand." He said, although he was almost convinced to try it. Terrell wasn't the smartest kid, but he knew Lumos was not a duelling spell. "I'd look Stupefy!"

It really was unfortunate that Terrell managed to block her summoning spell since Harper was starting to think she'd found a better alternative to Expelliarmus. It was definitely easier to say, at the very least. His incorporation of the spell in a pun caught her off-guard, and she had to dive out of the way, landing hard on her knees and hands as the jet of light whizzed right past her ear. Thankfully she'd managed to keep hold of her wand. Harper laughed lightly as she stood back up, half out of relief, half out of genuine amusement. "Okay, that was a really good pun," she conceded before shooting her own stunning spell back at him.

Terrell watched Harper dodge his spell by diving to the floor, at first he thought it might've been a hit but she made it. "Thanks!" He chuckled, "That was a great dive, have you considered becoming a keeper?" Terrell blocked the stunning spell with protego. He was enjoying the friendly duel, relieved that he wasn't up against some power hungry loon. He might not be so lucky if he made it to the next round. He gave Harper enough time to get herself composed again then sent the Jelly Leg Hex.

Harper could tell she'd have bruises on her knees after the match. Hopefully the dive looked cooler than it felt. "Depends. Are we talking Quidditch or the superior sport, football?" Terrell seemed to give her a second to catch her breath, and though she appreciated the gesture, she hoped he wouldn't assume she'd go easy on him. Once again Harper sidestepped his attack, not wanting to end up on the floor a second time if she could help it. "Expelliarmus!"

Terrell smiled, amused by Harper's comment, "Oh controversial!" He laughed, "I was talking about Quidditch but to be fair, you'd suit goalkeeper too!" Terrell jumped out of the way of the disarming spell, it didn't look quite as good as Harper's dive but that didn't matter since he avoided the spell anyway. "Stupefy!" He sent back.

Harper grinned at his compliment. "I prefer playing forward, but I'll take it." She'd found goalkeeper a bit too stressful to be enjoyable, but it turned out goalkeeping wasn't nearly as nerve-wracking as facing down spells. Harper readied herself for the next attack, the match starting to wear on her. Though dodging had seemed like a good strategy at first much more efficient than a three-syllable spell she was starting to realize it took up a lot more energy. A stunning spell shot towards her, and Harper let her reflexes guide her. But she was a second too late, and the spell caught her shoulder, rendering her unconscious before she could even process what had happened.
