Matt had surprised himself by agreeing to help out during the duelling tournament. He wasn't a very big duelist himself, but he had often enjoyed watching the duels. Once the two competitors seemed to be ready for the duel to begin, Matt pointed them to their places before speaking to them. "Welcome to your first round of duelling. The victor of this duel will be able to go on to the next round." Matt said. "If you break the rules, you'll be disqualified. Once you're unable to duel, you've lost." He explained. "When you're ready, bow to your opponent and get started." Matt said, stepping back to let the duel begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Brooke was eager to finally get a chance to test her own duelling skills. She checked the crowd before taking to the stage, wondering if her sister would bother to show, before moving to bow to Harper. Brooke didn't intend to lose, especially not in the first round, and wasted no time throwing her first spell out as soon as Harper had finished her own bow."Everte Statum!"

Even though wizards had magic at their disposal, it seemed that they were only creative enough to come up with two sports. Harper couldn't exactly join the Quidditch team in the middle of the year — not that she'd wanted to — so here she was, trying her hand at dueling. She'd never actually been in a duel before. Or even watched one. But she was good at DADA, and she'd gotten into plenty of fights with her brothers, so she was sure she'd be fine.

Harper didn't know Brooke well, and she wasn't sure if that was better or worse than dueling a friend. She shot the other girl a small smile before awkwardly bowing. Harper had barely straightened when Brooke threw a spell at her, forcing her to leap to the side. It was a good thing all her muggle sports training had given her excellent reflexes. "Stupefy!" she shot back. Going for spells that would immediately incapacitate her opponent seemed like a decent strategy.

Brooke had to smile at the fact that Harper's first instinct was to dodge her spell. Hopefully that boded well for Harper not being that fast of a caster. She threw up her own shield when Harper sent back a stunning spell, glad that she'd kept up her own reflexes between DADA classes and SDA practices, before launching a disarming spell at her.

Unfortunately Brooke blocked her spell, though Harper supposed the duel would be kind of boring if she knocked out her opponent within the first minute. She saw the disarming spell coming, and sidestepped it easily while simultaneously sending back a "Petrificus Totalus." Maybe she should start using the shield charm, but moving out of the way seemed much faster than spitting out a mouthful of clumsy syllables. Now she could return fire much more quickly, and hopefully Brooke would eventually be caught off guard.

Harper was still dodging her spells, and Brooke had to admit she was quick on her feet, even if her methods were a bit on the mundane side. She wasn't going to be caught dead doing that if she could help it though, casting another shield charm and stepping back as the spell shot into it before casting her own spell. "Locomotor Mortis!" Maybe that would stop Harper from jumping around so much.

Brooke blocked her spell again, much to Harper's disappointment. Maybe going for the seven-syllable spell hadn't been the greatest idea. Someone really needed to invent snappier-sounding spells. Harper dodged again, though she had to raise an eyebrow at her opponent's choice. It wasn't like the Leg-Locker Curse would knock anyone out of a duel on its own. Harper wasted no time in sending back a "Stupefy!" before starting to mull over Brooke's spell choice and larger strategy.

If it weren't for all her hopping around, Brooke would almost call Harper's strategy efficient. Maybe the other girl truly didn't trust herself with a shield charm, a thought which made Brooke smile smugly. She did flinch slightly when Harper's stunning spell hit her own shield, shaking out her wand arm before firing her own stunning spell in return. This time, Brooke tried aiming slightly to the side, hoping Harper might not notice and jump straight into it.

The best theory that Harper could come up with was that Brooke for some reason wanted her to stop moving. Maybe the Slytherin thought she was incapable of casting the shield charm? As a general rule, Harper did not take too kindly to being thought of as incapable. For a second, she hesitated, torn between following her gut and proving herself. The result was a very hasty — and consequently weak — shield charm she threw up when her pride won out at the very last second. Thankfully Brooke's aim had been off, and the spell glanced off the edge of the shield. She didn't want to think about what would have happened if it had hit dead on.

Refusing to let her face betray her panic, Harper immediately threw an "Expelliarmus!" at Brooke. She took a deep breath. That had been far too close, and she couldn't make that mistake again. She needed to forget her pride and just trust her instincts.

Brooke couldn't be sure, but it had seemed like Harper had hesitated before casting a shield charm. Eager to try and press the advantage of any uncertainly, Brooke wasted no time firing off another spell once she'd blocked Harper's disarming spell, focusing all her energy into launching a strong stunning spell.

Part of her was sorely tempted to try another shield charm, to show that she could create one, that she could create a strong one. But that would be a mistake, so instead, she let her reflexes guide her, ducking out of the way of Brooke's stunning spell. Maybe she was imagining it, but the spell seemed stronger than some of Brooke's previous attacks. Harper returned fire with her own stunning spell, trying to match her opponent's force.

Brooke grit her teeth as Harper dodged her spell again. "Stay still please," She said, throwing a trip jinx back at Harper after blocking her stunning spell. She was a little impressed by the power of Harper's spell as it clashed into her shield, but for now she just wanted Harper to stop hopping around the stage.
