The Sorting Ceremony

Elia Dragonova looked to her sister, knowing that Cordelia would be sorted before she would. Her name started with a C, whereas hers started with an E. Elia watched the other students in the Great Hall, which was what her mother had described to her before they came, which Cole did not seem to care about much anyway. Cole was a Slytherin, like Isabella was. Isabella had a twin, Ostensia, who was in Hufflepuff. Then their uncles were in Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. So, there were all houses in their families. Elia heard Cordelia's name called up to the front, and Elia watched as her sister went through the sorting process. Elia frowned, as she heard her name. She slowly walked up to the front and sat down on the stool. She felt the hat upon her blonde hair, and she imagined the sorting hat picking her brain apart to find what qualities she had. She did wish it luck. The Romanes were good at having mixed qualities of the houses, from what she had come to believe. This would determine her next seven years, which she prayed would be better than she originally imagined it. After all, she was already homesick.

"SLYTHERIN!"

Cordelia Dragonova had been waiting for the day she would be sorted since she'd realised she would be attending hogwarts. She heard about the school from various family members so she wasn't surprised by anything. She knew that there was a pretty even split of people in her family of houses. In fact her mother and aunts and uncles had been in all four houses. She wondered if that would be the same for her and her siblings. She knew Cole was a Slytherin, like their mother, but she wasn't too sure what house she or Elia would be in. Cordelia secretly hoped it was the same house, if only to annoy her five minutes younger sister. She loved reminding her of the fact that Elia, was also in her name Cordelia, and Elia hated it. Cordelia found it to be a fun game and never left Elia alone. She knew it wasn't very nice, but she simply couldn't help it. Elia was fun to mess with. Soon her name was called and she stepped up to the stool. She knew she would be sorted first, and she couldn't wait to see where she would go, she was excited about where Elia would go too. This was all just so exciting.

"You really could be a Slytherin, too... but maybe you'd be a more natural fit in GRYFFINDOR!"

Walking into the hall he had only been into the school grounds when he was very small and his mother had no choice but to bring him with her to work on the rare occasion. He looked around at the tables and the students seated at them, spotting his sister at Gryffindor he gives her the 'sup' nod with confidence as he walks with the group of fresh first years to where the hat was going to be, he looks up to see his Great Aunt the Headmistress he beamed at her, some student's had already paired off and were gossiping to each other, Leonidas rolled his eyes at their little cliques, they were going to be split up soon as the hat chose houses for them which would be their homes for the next 7 years of their lives.
Leonidas was confident, he was going to follow in his mothers footsteps and no doubt his sisters too.
Name after name was called, he listened to the strange surnames not sure how the families got their names until he heard his own name.

'Frost, Leonidas'

Thankful that he had been given his mother's surname over his fathers, he didn't want to be known as the boy without a father, no one knew where that man had gone, he ran out on him and his mother as far as he was concerned he was a Frost through and through, just like his sister, the only thing connecting him to the Stratis family were his silver eyes, but he doubted anyone would get that close to notice.
Leonidas walked up the steps and sat on the stool. The hat was placed on his head and he looked towards his sister.

"You can get along fine without your sister, you know... I dare think you'll excel with a good bit of competition between you, too. Yes, I'm afraid you might not like it much but your best path is in SLYTHERIN!"

Over the heads of the new first year students hover a variety of candles and lights, high up almost burning the never ending ceiling that changes with the weather and the festivities that are happening. The festivities of the sorting ceromony being probably the most important of the year, more the reason for the Hogwarts New Zealand staff to do their utter best. Dozens and dozens of eyes are burning in the back of the students as they walk up in front, all nervous in their own right -- Memphis Hart being one of them. He would never have guessed that he would be in such a place, never would he have guessed that this would be his surroundings a year ago when he was still playing around with some of his friends that were not as special as he was.

Memphis Hart was special, because he was a wizard. Presumely born from two muggles, making him a muggle born. All of this was new to him, the little magic that he had been able to use had been insufficient and uncontrolable. But it was an indication that he was not like any of the other children in the neighbourhood. With everything being new to him, he did not really know what was about to happen. An adult told them prior to the group entering the Great Hall that each of them would be sorted into a house where they would remain for the upcoming seven years of their magical education. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each of the houses sounded like they could be related to an animal of some sort. And two of them he recognized, since he had already done a bit of reading in his history book on his way towards the castle that would be his school and his home for the upcoming year. Ravenclaw possessed the colours blue and bronze, with a bird beings its animal while Slytherin contained a snake and was coloured with colours of green and silver. There had been a few shades of red, gold and black on the other page which he was unable to get to. Presuming it were the other houses called Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.

Sunken in his own thoughts, Memphis barely noticed a few of his fellow first year students probbing at him. Frowning, he tried to ignore it and decided to look up instead. Confronted with the lady who was calling out the names, now pointing at the chair where the hat was close to. Alas, his name had been dropped but he had not even heard it. "Hart, Memphis!" The woman, who was presumely the headmistress of the school, repeated and he hurried himself up the stage. Quickly taking a seat on the chair, able to look across the enormous hall that was filled with students and adults who were probably staff member -- he felt the hat being placed on top of his tousled raven hair. Swallowing thickly, he tried to be as calm as he possible could. A talking hat -- who would have imagined coming across something like that? Curious, nonetheless. Perhaps it could be found in one of his books as well. It must have been, they cost his parents a small fortune with everything included.

FOCUS -- try to focus, he silenced his mind and allowed the magical hat do whatever it was what it would do. Hands fisting the armchairs of where he sat, knuckles turning white as he pinched his eyes presuming there would be some sort of shot of pain course through them at any moment.

"Why is it the talking that amazes all you first years? How not the thinking or the ancient magic or, indeed, the sorting which I am entrusted with? By the end of the year you could enchant a babbling whatever-you-want, talking hat. How ridiculous. Oh, alright, I won't put you through this much longer. You're a SLYTHERIN!"

Anora had been waiting for the day she would receive her Hogwarts Acceptance Letter, and ever since that day came, she had been waiting for the day she would be able to be sorted. She was unlike both of her parents, who were mainly interested in doing the right thing and learning as much as possible before it was too late. All Anora wanted to do was be sorted, get some friends, and then experience as many adventures as possible with those friends while she was at Hogwarts.

Anora felt the butterflies in her stomach become even more antsy as student after student went up to the stool and was sorted into their proper Hogwarts House. She knew in the beginning that she would be one of the last students to be sorted since her last name started with a W, but she didn't expect it to take this long! Anora zoned out until finally, her name was called.

"Walsh, Anora!"

Anora let out a small squeal and skipped up to the school. Her heart was pounding as hard as possible, and it felt like it would leap out of her chest! The Sorting Hat was carefully placed upon Anora's messy red curls and she waited for what seemed like forever until the Sorting Hat finally called out...

The hat stop singing, finally. Maude thought it was a bit annoying but she had consider over the houses that it did mention. They all sounded, alright she guessed. Zann never mentioned the hat or the houses to Maude or Ash, he said he forgotten a lot about school. His memory was there, just not enough for him to be happily open to share with his twins. Maude tried though, at least get him talking again. He wouldn't take the bait, so school was a mystery for the both of them. Maude and Ash. Like their mother's disappearance, how strange? Maude looked over at her twin, she would be up first, because of her name. Names were shouted out in order, students marched up to the stool to take a seat and be sorted. It was easy to follow, yet, Maude wasn't all too confident in the hat, that maybe it would get her in the wrong house?! And if that happened, well she would be annoyed. It would be a wasted potential to send her in the wrong house. Ash went up there, and eventually, Maude walked the path towards the sorting hat. It was lifted and flopped down her short straight black hair. Maude shut her eyes, she should've felt nervous, should've felt bunch of nerves jumping in her belly....and yet she was calm as she waited for the hat to sort her. Had she not drank any tea this morning, Maude thinks she would've been feeling a lot more anxious to be done with this ordeal and go already!

Peony stepped into the hall and watched the enchanted roof change with the weather outside. It looked like it was coming into a storm and she hoped that they would shut the enchantment off if that happened. She wasn't quite sure how it worked, but she hoped it wouldn't allow the weather to rain on her lovely new coat. It was flicks and swishy and Peony loved it. It was just like her fathers lucky duelling jacket and she was excited to have something that was so much like his. She would cherish it always and never let any harm come to it. This was the jacket she would win her first duel in, she was sure of it. She would become a duellist and win all of the competitions and it would be glorious, she could almost taste the victory. She wasn't in it for the fame, but for the knowledge and talent, the skills she would hone would be invaluable. She wanted nothing so much as she wanted to be just like her father. She loved him more than life itself, as well her siblings and she loved watching him duel. All of his opponents were just as talented, just as smart and yet her father had an excellent record. She'd always known she'd been born to follow in his footsteps and nothing would get in the way of that if she could help it.

Soon her name was called and Peony sat on the stool patiently waiting for her house. She had no idea where she would be as she didn't understand all that much about the sorting system. Dittany had seemed fine however and she was sure there was no really big thing about it.

Zennon kept his hands in his pockets as the night chill somehow managed to seep into his bones. He wasn't cold, but it was like everything was happening all at once. He'd grown accustomed to the fact that he was going to Hogwarts and that was fine, but it was the fear of a new group of people and what they could potentially find out about him that worried him. He knew how to cover with his family, but with everyone else, he would have to learn a whole new way of hiding. This just wasn't what he'd pictured for himself and he wasn't quite sure how to handle it. He knew that he was probably over reacting, but he couldn't do much about it, not with the way things were at the moment. Sighing, he scuffed his shoes on the marble floors only to curse under his breath at the black marks now on his previously pristine shoes. He may have been only eleven, but Zennon could appreciate a finely crafted shoe when he saw one and now he had devalued it by scuffing it all up. He was furious.

His name was soon called, and Zennon looked around at the other students, just to double check there was no one else with his name, or similar. Noting there was none, he walked up to the stool and sat carefully on the side of it, leaning forward slightly to get a good position on the chair. He kind of liked towering over the other students like this. It was like he could see everything and know everything even though he was realistically as uninformed about the world as everyone else here, though Zennon somehow felt he was a little more knowledgable in some areas than most.

"Yes, even with no information about your peers at all you would find yourself better than the rest, wouldn't you. Run along to SLYTHERIN!"

The doors swung open and Leonard swallowed quietly to himself as he stepped inside, looking around he tried to focus on the task ahead. Looking with his glances ahead the rows of people to the end, he saw the hat and what seems like professors of the school. Walking along now he tried to stay close to the group, and behind almost hiding as he tried to clear his head to better prepare hismelf.

"Leonard Kammerlich!", his name was called out and he stepped around and in front of the remaining group. Walking up and sitting down as he feels the weight of the hat pressing down on his head, he failed his thoughts were still running wild. His determination to make it at Hogwarts, and hope to become a good Quidditch player in the end were making him doubt himself, as he felt his nervousness was probably showing.

The day had come, this day. The day she was whisk away from her normal life in New York, and to be sent across the ocean for all of this? The magic ceiling and hanging candles that float in midair. It was like living in dream of someone else's, because this is not something Wendy dreamt about at night. Castles and dungeons, witches and wizards. Oh my. All bizarre and real? She waited any moment to wake up from this silly little dream. And that she would be back home in her bed sound asleep. And the weirdness, the supernatural she experienced all those years could've been just an active imagination of a young girl's mind. As time crept on, she didn't see wonderland disappear like she had wanted. Dorothy wasn't going home anytime soon. The weird guys, the one that had explained this world to the Bells family, had to prove to her parents who they were and why they had suddenly shown up on their doorsteps the day their daughter received that Hogwarts letter.

Then out of nowhere came nana speaking up for those guys in grey robes. What was the deal? Those robe wearing, looking like monks if they didn't have hair on their face? And nana, taking their side, feeding into their delusions. Suddenly, she says it all makes sense now. That her back up singer Virginia was a witch. A witch who had led a double life and was good friends with Tracy Bell. Said Virginia had confided in her, showed her a wand and everything. Wendy couldn't believe it. She loves her nana from the moon and back, but this all of sudden she wanted to acknowledge what was happening to Wendy. Right then and there. If Wendy could've rolled her eyes double over, she would've that day. Would've done a lot more if possible. So these men, convinced the Bells of the truth and that's how she ended up in New Zealand.

Wendy looked around at her peers, their small faces waiting for their fate to be written. She was nervous in some sense, but not as if she would be if the guys in robes didn't got into full details about the school and their world. She felt calm, mixed with confident, but dare she said, somewhat in denial of this whole thing. But then she heard her name being called, BELL WENDY, the women says. Wendy moves automatically, she stops at the stool then sits. Her brain went complete auto. A house was chosen, she snapped out of it and went to sit with other students. It was going be a very long seven years.

Romelia Nacht was nervous, excited, bouncing in her spot like a kid on Christmas. Everything in the beautiful castle was lit up, it was moving and the sounds of the halls with echoing footsteps were like a symphony. Romy couldn't wait to send photographs to her mother, to her cousin Ademar and Viviana. She couldn't wait to tell them all about it - even though they all knew it. The only person who didn't was her mother, but she would recieve image after image, knowing her mother's ex husband wasn't going to filter them and keep her from knowing what her child was up to. This was going to be an amazing learning year.

The girl pushed her way to the front, until she realized they were calling names and not just having a free for all. Slightly dejected Romy waited. it wasn't until they started calling her name that she rushed up there. "Romy." She interrupted, hoping the woman wouldn't continue saying her full name. The child sat, her demure frame sinking onto the stool as she waited, swinging her legs, thinking carefully about what she wanted house wise, knowing she could make a better decision. After all this was her life and her future. "I want to be in the green house. I like the colors. Or the red house. They're both very nice. I'll mold to them as i grow I'm sure." She remarked.

"You'd do well in either the red or green house, but perhaps even better in......Hufflepuff"

She stared in front of hundreds or thousands of students as the new ones gathered for the start of their own sorting. Their destiny being predicted by a hat. Asha looked to Maude and it seems she was okay by the fact that they're living in a castle with no parents. The young Crow wasn't use to not having their father beside them. They were too young to be sent into a boarding school. Yes, she's heard about the house but she's not sure whether she belongs to any of them. Gryffindor ... Asha thinks she's not brave enough and not tough enough to be there. Slytherin ... She's not ambitious nor looks at blood statues differently. Ravenclaw ... The eleven year old did think about Ravenclaw for too long. Asha knows some stuff but her mind isn't for scholars. The last house on the card was Hufflepuff.

Yes, she was quiet, humble and nice but she heard they're too soft to even fight back to their bullies. Asha let out a sigh and one by one their names were called upon by the Headmistress. She was called first before her sister and she looked at her with distress on her face as she walked up to the stool and sat. The dark curly hair kid waited for the hat's decision to unfold.

Kira took a deep breath, internally screaming as she waited for her name to be called. She hadn't been alone like this in a long time- surrounded by strangers, just another face in a sea of people. You couldn't tell by looking at her, but underneath that calm facade and smooth brow was a horribly frightened little girl.

When they finally got to her name, she stood a little taller and marched herself right on up with her head held high.

She may not have had any idea what to expect or what would happen to her, but she would face it all with a smile on her face and a skip in her step.

Even if this weird talking hat fell halfway down her face.

Sapphire followed the crowd through the school grounds, not really noticing the giant castle. She was too busy scoping out potential targets to care. It wasn't until the actually entered the old structure that she was pulled from her mischievous thoughts. This place was gorgeous, there was no doubt about it. She admired the structural design and integrity of the whole thing... at least, until they made it into the dining hall. Sapphire was instantly captivated by the floating candles. How did they stay up there? Why weren't they dripping hot wax? Though... that could be amusing...

A sly grin crept across her face. This place had so much promise. She stood with the other students and brooded, not really wondering why they had stopped or what was going on. A million different thoughts ran through her head. What about color changing candles? What if they dripped and every drop changed your hair in some extravagant way? The possibilities were endless!

"...Sapphire. MICHAELS, SAPPHIRE."

Sapphire jumped at the sound of her name. Oh, yeah, people. She hurried up to the exasperated looking teacher, ignoring the laughing of the other students. She would get them all in due time. She plopped down in the designated spot, not knowing what to expect since she hadn't bothered to see what was happening.

She was pleasantly surprised when they dropped a talking hat on her head. The thing was enormous! And it could talk? How did they do that? Could you make other stuff talk? Was someone talking through it? Her thoughts continued on in a whirl of similar inquiries and bad ideas until the hat interrupted her...

Maleko wasn't really sure what he was supposed to think of all of this. It had come as quite the surprise to hear that the stuff his parents had always told him about through folklore and fairytales actually existed. As he entered the enormous room with the other soon-to-be-first years, Maleko couldn't believe that there were a lot of other people that were just like him. ''Kapule, Maleko,'' called the old woman and the boy jerked his head around to look at her, finding it hard to believe that he was here still even though it all seemed so real. He walked to the front of the hall, pushing some away while doing so in order to get to the front, and glanced at the Professor who had just called his name, thinking that she must be mad to think that he would allow that old hat to be placed upon his head, though after a moment did what he was told and took place on the wooden stool. Maleko's eyes moved through the Great Hall as the old hat was placed upon his head and waited for it to say something like it had done with the other first year students.

"Your ambition would benefit you best in Slytherin!"
