Second Years Lesson One (Ravenclaw/Slytherin)

Mallory was both relieved and nervous to be back. Peter was sleeping soundly in the baby rocker by her desk, charmed so that the noise of the students wouldn't disturb him. She had set up the classroom again the way she liked, giving it a quick cleaning that morning before arranging her desk. Amara was curled up with Maxim underneath her large oak desk, fast asleep as well (as if she'd gone and spelled all her little minions to rest, when really it had just been a long night) and all of Mallory’s notes and lesson plans were arranged neatly on the desk itself, turned to face out to the rows of seats so she could sit and still supervise her students while being able to watch her son.

She had decorated the desk with a line of flowers, most of them shorter, creating a small barrier along the edge of the desk that she could still see over. She had taken care getting dressed that morning, her light powder blue robes swishing gently around her feet and her dark mahogany hair pulled back in a braided chignon. Peter was thankfully a calmer baby, dramatic when he wanted to be, but fascinated with watching her to the point where she could get ready for the day.

She rose from her desk as the students filed in, smiling kindly as the last of them settled in their seats. She clapped her hands lightly to get their attention, looking over the fresh young faces of the second years. “Dobroye utro, good morning my dears,” She greeted gently, her Russian accent a more subtle but still there. “My name is Professor Mallory Grayveson, and I’ll be your Professor until fifth year,” She raised a hand, the chalk raising to write out her name in an elegant script behind her. "And for those curious," She smiled. "This is my son, Peter. He'll be joining us for lessons until he's a bit older."

Feeling a little more confident after her first lesson had gone well, her stance was more relaxed as she turned back to her second-year students. “Today's lesson is fairly simple, my dears. We’ll be covering the cleaning charm. Repeat after me; Scourgify." She went over the wand movement and the spell twice, making sure everyone saw. "I have a list here, of the charms we’ll cover this semester. Today, I would like you to go over this chapter and try the charm here in class.

Mallory waved her hand, and dirtied dishes appeared in front of each student. “I am right here, of course, if you have any questions or need any assistance. For extra credit, if you wish, you can write a short essay on the different ways you can use this charm. It doesn’t have to be much, a few paragraphs at least, but do put some thought into it, dears.” She encouraged, smiling warmly at her students as she moved to sit at her desk, the reading list appearing on the board. “I do have paper copies of this list, if you would like to gather one on your way out today,” She added, settling into her seat and smiling as she felt Amara twining around her legs. “My office is open, my dears, from breakfast until dinner every day, so feel free to stop by and see me.”

Winnie was determined to do better. The question would be how much better could a person do when they’d already achieved O’s in the classes, but she knew she needed to do better. She needed to work harder, smarter. She needed to be better, her parents hadn’t been completely disappointed, but they also just hadn’t really been pleased with her. She knew she had to do better, in whatever way she could. Winnie was working hard already as the first week was just starting. She grabbed her books and notes and put them into her bag and then headed out of the dorm room and to her first class of the day.

Winnie walked into the charms classroom and took the same spot in the room as the year before. She looked up at the professor as she finished getting her notes and books out. She looked at the spell list and wrote them down quickly. She nodded at what they would be covering, she repeated the incantation as the professor told them what it was. She did the wand motion after the professor did it and was glad that they would get to do the spell. She took her wand and the dirty plate and after doing the wand motion said. ”Scourgify,” she did the spell a few times until it worked and then did the spell over and over until the professor dismissed them.

Beatrice was excited to be back for another year of charms. She liked it much more than Transfiguration, which still eluded her in many ways. Magic was a lot harder than she had realized, and it was made even more difficult by the fact that they were supposed to do no magic over their break. How was she expected to be the best witch if she couldn't even practice the spells she'd learned last year? She was used to going to school year-round - this almost seemed like a punishment.

As class began, the Ravenclaw took diligent notes, sitting next to her twin as Professor Grayveson instructed them on the cleaning charm incantation. She repeated it confidently before writing it down and a brief description, not that she didn't already know from reading ahead since that was all she could have done during their break. She highlighted the spells from the board in her notes before looking at Maggie as they pulled out their wands. She wasn't sure what they were supposed to be cleaning, so in the sea of other second years practicing their spells, Bea went to stand up to maybe practice cleaning Maggie or her desk, when she felt her footing slide out from under her, landing on her back and hitting her head slightly on the floor. She laid for a moment as the wind got knocked out of her, feeling the water she had just slipped on from somebody's missed spell seeping into her back and bottoms. As the Ravenclaw rolled onto her side, she felt more wet as a nearby Slytherin sprayed her with their spell. Whether accidental or not, Bea sat for a moment, soaked and sudsy, as she looked down at the ground, trying to hold in her tears. She could see both her twin and her professor move in the direction she was stuck at, afraid to get up as she heard snickers from not only the Slytherins but the Ravenclaws, as well. The professor assisted in helping her stand up as Maggie asked if Bea was okay, and she just barely shook her head, slumping back in her seat onto the wet robes and pants she was now stuck with until class was over. She started gathering her things and glanced up at the clock as Maggie silently sat beside her. As soon as the bell rang, Bea quickly grasped her bag and ran to the Ravenclaw towers.

God mod approved. Feel free to be the ones who messed up the spells or laugh at Bea if you want!

The cleaning spell, Scourgify would be good to help with many things. You could use it to clean around your house and do your chores. You could use it to help clean a person, like a baby, who got messy. Scourgify could help clean your pet, too! If you needed to fill a bucket with cleaning solution, this would be a good spell to use. In the muggle world, it would be good to help clean your car quickly.

Lilith arrived to her Charms lesson, looking forward to another lesson. She was looking forward tot he magic part of course too, it was exciting everytime she learned a new spell. Giving a short smile and wave to the Professor she settled down on a seat near the front. Listening to the Professor walking them through everything was nice and all but she did notice the amount of my dears being a little excessive, in her first year she had found it nice but now it felt like she was little more than a toddler. Brushing the thought off she got up to practice the spell.

Having a little stare off with the dishes, the exact chore her siblings never wanted to do and therefore it was put on her. Oh yeah her parents refused to use magic even for these things, it was silly. If magic existed why not just use it for something as daunting as the dishes. "Scourgify." Lilith spoke softly and did the wand motion shown earlier, at first it didn't work but on her second try it worked a little. Though the dishes were still dirty, she repeated until it was all pristine and clean, very proud of herself. Hearing some commotion Lilith whipped her head around, seeing one of the twins she shared her dorm with on the floor. The Ravenclaw felt a rush of worry as she walked over, "Beatrice, are you okay? Did you get hurt?" She asked quietly, shooting a look at whoever was now spraying water at the fallen girl. Seriously, why be rude. Making a note to ask the girl later if her back hurt or head, Lilith made her way back to her desk to do the homework assignment.

I think it could be a very good lifehack for a single mother or any mother really. Kids are lovely but running a household AND taking care of the small ones is it's own full-time job, so just you know using the spell while feeding the baby? Seems like a pretty good idea to me. Also if you have a car I suppose you could clean that with this, or your windows anything really. I wonder whether it could work on yourself, instead of showering doing this? I have heard of some using it as a punishment for swearing because it fills your mouth with soap but that seems cruel, but surely you could use it in the shower or bath? I mean why would it not work like it did on the dishes just now....

Eli arrived at the Charms classroom and immediately made room for his sister to sit with him, should should wish to do so. They were towards the back of the class because quite frankly Professor Greyveson annoyed the heck out of them and they were trying to ignore her as much as they could. He quickly took notes of the spells listed on the board, wondering if they would manage to perfect all of them this semester, he was probably going to have to practice with Sayuri when he got the chance so they could have a better idea together. Charms was one of his better subjects, but he certainly didn't love it, not with this monster for a professor. Ugh. He wasn't a fan of having the baby in the room either, because what if it woke up and ruined their concentration? She should have put him in her office or left him with his father to care for, it made no sense to have a baby here. Maybe people just wanted to surround him with babies apparently? Because they seemed to be inescapable. First his parents had twins and then Rica had a baby, which he hadn't expected, Aunt Ari had more kids and Aunt Ai as well? He couldn't escape them at all this break. It was grinding on his every nerve. Ariana wasn't even really his Aunt, she was the other side of the family, and yet...

When the dirty dishes appeared, he felt a flicker of unease, his mind already racing through the potential disasters a classroom full of second-years could unleash with Scourgify. As he practiced the incantation, a loud clatter drew his attention to Beatrice slipping on water. He winced as she hit the ground, feeling a pang of sympathy even as a few students stifled giggles. Aware of how mortifying it must have been for her, he avoided adding to her embarrassment and quietly cast "Scourgify" to clear some of the mess around her. He glanced her way as the professor and her twin helped her up, silently resolving to check in on her after class if she hadn’t bolted straight to the common room.

Lumos was always in a good mood when it came to charms, because it was both his best class, and his favourite lesson which really helped things. He adjusted his grip on his wand, repeating "Scourgify" with the same precision he'd always prided himself on. He loved Charms - small spells with big utility - and the cleaning charm was no exception. The dish in front of him sparkled clean after a few focused attempts, and he jotted down some quick notes before noticing Beatrice slip and fall out of the corner of his eye. He raised a hand to his mouth in an exaggerated attempt to look polite, though the grin tugging at his lips betrayed him. “Careful there, Bea, didn’t realise we were testing slip charms today,” he quipped, shaking his head at the girl, still chuckling as the professor moved to help her up. He didn’t mean to be cruel exactly - okay, maybe just a little - but watching her glare and slump into her seat was far too amusing. As the snickers died down, Lumos casually flicked his wand, “Scourgify,” at his own dish with a practiced ease, though every now and then his eyes darted back to Beatrice, his grin widening whenever she shifted uncomfortably in her wet robes. When the class was over, he watched her dash out of the room, muttering just loud enough to be heard, “Well, at least she’s clean now.”

Forrest was a little surprised when after only a brief introduction Professor Grayveson got straight to work on learning a new spell. Most professors didn’t bother teaching anything in the first lesson, Forrest wasn’t mad about it especially as they were learning a very useful charm in the cleaning charm, something he suspected would come in handy during the time at the school.

As everyone got to work practicing the charm, Beatrice had a particularly difficult time with the charm and found herself slipping and falling onto the floor. Forrest didn’t see it happen so he didn’t know how she ended up on the floor, he just saw her down there and Lumos making fun of her, as Lumos always did, he didn’t like the Slytherin all that much. Forrest continued for the rest of the lesson, trying to get his desk clean and only stopping when he had cast the spell correctly and his desk was decently clean. Once the lesson was over, Forrest took a copy of the spell list and made his way out of the classroom.

Eoghan was immediately uncomfortable upon seeing a baby was joining their class, and even more so when the professor said he'd be there until he was a little older. Not only would this be incredibly dangerous, both for the child and the rest of the children in the room, but also what if this child ended up being a squib? Eoghan's own twin sister possessed no magical ability and as far as they knew, Eoghan was the only person that was magical which meant Imogen was either a muggle or a squib herself. What would happen if the professor's son ended up with no magical ability either? Would they wipe his mind of the things he may have seen in class? Eoghan already felt tense due to the way the magical and muggle world had to keep apart, but no infact should have to be exposed to its complications unnecessarily.

It was hard to concentrate as they were introduced to the spells they'd be learning that year, and as soon as they were given the go-ahead to practice the cleaning spell, the Grey twins proved Eoghan's point entirely as to why having a baby in the room was a bad idea. He watched wide-eyed, hand on his own wand if not to reassure himself it was most definitely pointed away from anything and anyone, almost frozen to the spot himself in case he accidentally made the situation worse. Being a professor must have been terrifying at the best of times, but having your own newborn mixed in was just silly.

Hanging back once they were dismissed, Eoghan hoped he'd get a chance to talk to the professor about it. He knew if he didn't, he'd probably find it hard to concentrate for the rest of the time they had classes together.

Charms was fun, as long as it meant learning new ones. A cleaning charm however? That was just boring. If there was one thing Kanako didn't appreciate it was doing chores. A good thing about hogwarts was not needing to do them, and to be reminded of them in spite of all that was annoying to her. Kanako practiced the pronounciation with the rest of the class and then it was soon the class' turn to actually do the spell. She readily pronounced the charm, cleaning the dirty dishes to near perfection. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed someone slip. Kanako couldn't help the chuckle that emerged from her, trying to hide her smile behind her hand. It was an impressive fall after all. Kanako decided to do a cleaning charm just slightly targeted towards her, just to make sure the girl was good and sudsy. "Oh, sorry, my wand must have slipped," Kanako said, trying not to grin and half-succeeding. She soon forgot about the girl's ordeal and continued practicing the spell, getting better with each attempt. That had cheered Kanako up a bit.

Sayuri entered the classroom, reflecting that it was already her second year attending this place. Her hair had grown long enough to be neatly braided behind her. She took a seat beside her brother, her gaze narrowing at the still-present baby in the classroom. Why the professor kept on insisting on placing an infant here was beyond her. As the lesson began, Sayuri carefully practiced the pronunciation of the incantation, mimicking the wand movement demonstrated. When the dirtied dishes appeared on the desks, Sayuri stared at hers for a moment before preparing to cast the spell. Her attempt was cut short though as she saw a classmate slip and fall from the corner of her eye. The professor helping the girl stand up seemed to little too late. If the woman wasn't so busy keeping an eye on the infant on top of the number of students in the class, a cushioning charm could have been cast to help that girl. Suffice to say, Sayuri was entirely unimpressed. Ignoring the rest of the commotion, she stared at the dirty dishes in front of her, brows furrowing. "Scourgify," she intoned firmly. The dish gleamed clean and the Slytherin let out a small sigh of relief. As soon as they were allowed to leave, she packed her stuff and left.
