Matthew had stayed at Hogwarts during the holidays this year, and it had been an odd experience. Two years ago he had still gone home to his parents, like most students did. And last year he had gone to Leah's house, where he had kissed her. It had felt weird to ask her again this year, so he hadn't. Instead he had spent Christmas by himself for the first time. It had been... odd, not very pleasant.
But thankfully the holidays had flown by, and the new semester had started. Students had returned to the school, which made the building seem a lot less empty. He hadn't looked at his new schedule yet, but he already knew it would be a lot busier than it had been last semester. The first half of the year he'd only had Charms and History of Magic. And of the two, he had definitely preferred Charms. It wasn't his best class, and not his favorite either, but he did enjoy the spells they learned. Lately he had taken to practicing some of the spells. The one spell he'd enjoyed most was the Disillusionment Charm. It made objects and people nearly look like they were invisible, though if you looked closely you could still see it. After practicing it on his book during lessons, he had started to make bigger and bigger things 'disappear' by using it. He was looking for something large to use the spell on, just to see if he could do it. As he wandered through the entrance hall, he noticed it was quite empty. Maybe there would be something here he could practice on? It would be kind of funny to see if he could make a suit of armor look as if it was gone. Though it would still be quite solid and present if someone were to walk into it.
His eye was caught by something else, and he stopped in front of the big hourglasses where the house points for the four houses were displayed. They were quite beautiful, and this wasn't the first time he had admired them since he had transferred at the start of the previous school-year. A thought came to him, and he realized he had to try it. If he could use the Disillusionment Charm on one of the hourglasses, it would look as if it was gone. It would surely confuse other students, and it would be hilarious. As long as he didn't get in trouble for it, that was. He glanced around, but no one seemed to be paying him much attention. Before he could talk himself out of it, he tapped the Gryffindor hourglass with his wand and muttered the incantation. To his delight, the hourglass took on the colors of the wall behind it immediately. The shining rubies soon hidden by the charm. It now looked like there were only three hourglasses, and he grinned to himself. This charm had a lot of potential for jokes.
