@Harper Alston vs. @Penny Wills

Lena was starting to feel tired but figured she should really start paying attention as the duels heated up. Tea in hand, she looked at the competitors and gave them a smile. "You know the rules by now. Please play fair, bow, and begin!"

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Despite getting her arm burned and watching her robes turn into a pile of ashes, Harper left the first round of the tournament feeling pretty good. Her disillusionment strategy had worked. She'd won. There would be downsides to using the strategy so early in the tournament, of course. Word might have spread among the other sixth year duelists, taking away the element of surprise. But Harper was prepared to meet that challenge. The duel with Liusaidh had given her a better understanding of the limitations of her strategy, as well as a couple new ideas on ways to use the invisibility to her advantage.

Harper's excitement only grew when she saw the next set of pairings. Flynn had been knocked out, and while she would have liked a chance to beat him, the dueling title now felt like it was truly up for grabs. Harper was also happy to see that she was paired against Penny. She liked the Slytherin, and duels against friends were always more fun. "Hey Penny!" she greeted as she stepped onto the platform. At Professor Williams' instructions, Harper bowed and shot Penny an apologetic smile. "See ya." With a wave of her wand, she disappeared, concealed by a Disillusionment Charm.

Penny was feeling great! She had one win under her belt and was on to round two! It was a desperately needed confidence boost which had her smiling in the lead up to her second duel, a smile she beamed on to Harper when she saw her. "Hey, good to see you." Although she did not see her for long.

Bowing and grabbing her wand, she sprung up to send her first defensive spell, but nothing came and instead Harper disappeared. She knew then that this duel was going to be more interesting than her last. The Slytherin sighed, "Hiding? That's not very Gryffindor-ly of you, Harper! Homenum Revelio."

Harper stifled a laugh at Penny's comment. As much as she wanted to respond, doing so would only advertise her location. It wasn't entirely a surprise when Penny chose the Human-presence-revealing spell*, and Harper felt something swoop over her head. Though she couldn't see anything when she looked up, she knew there was likely a marker hovering above her head, signaling her location to Penny. That would make things a little trickier, but at least she remained invisible. And hopefully the marker would fade soon. Harper crouched a bit as she moved to the side and shot back a quiet "Reducto."

A curser above Harper's head was what Penny to keep sights and send spells on target. She did find it strange dueling an invisible person though and had to stay extra vigilant to defend. She blocked an incoming spell then sent a spell that would stop Harper from moving around "Petrificus Totalus"

If the swooping sensation hadn't been enough to alert Harper that Penny's spell had worked, the Full Body-Bind Curse that came worryingly close certainly did the trick. She ducked out of the way, took a couple quick steps to the side, and sent back an "Incarcerous." Harper wasn't sure how long the marker above her head would last, but she figured it was better to just proceed normally. She didn't want to do anything that would give up her location once the marker had faded.

Penny found the disillusionment charm annoying as she couldn't see when the next spell was about to be cast, giving her less time to react. The next spell came hurtling towards her and she just managed to shield herself in time. Immediately she sent her next spell, hoping to catch Harper off guard again. "Expelliarmus"

Harper watched as thick coils of rope shot from her wand towards Penny, only to be stopped by the shield. The next attack came quickly, and Harper once again sidestepped the spell. There was a strange freedom, she'd discovered, in being invisible. It didn't have any real bearing on how quickly she could move, but she felt freer, lighter.

Eyeing the ropes on the ground, Harper pointed her wand towards Penny's feet and sent over a stream of Gubraithian fire. Even if Penny managed to avoid the flames, Harper hoped the ropes would catch fire and present one more obstacle for the Slytherin to deal with. She'd gotten the idea from her duel with Liusaidh, when she'd been forced to dodge the puddles of water on the platform.

Penny was not too familiar with Harper's spell although she did know that it was fire and that she needed to get out of the way, pronto. Jumping to avoid the flames, Penny watched the rope ignite in front of her and in an instant was ablaze. All she could think was to get the thing away from her. She aimed her wand at the burning rope and cast "Depulso" Although still invisible, Penny sent the burning rope in the direction of where Harper would be stood. She didn't take any time to think, she gripped her wand hard and stayed vigilant, ready for whatever came next.

Harper quickly made her way to the edge of the platform, watching the burning rope skid past her. After a brief self-inspection to make sure her clothes hadn't accidentally caught fire, Harper turned her attention to the rope. If it had been normal flames, she wouldn't have thought twice about leaving it on the platform or sending it back towards Penny. But as much as Harper wanted to win the duel, she wasn't willing to deliberately set her friend alight with everlasting fire. Mind made up, Harper pointed her wand at the rope. "Wingardium leviosa." She swung it in a slow arc towards Penny, hoping to force the Slytherin back a bit more. But before it could actually touch the girl, Harper flicked her wrist to the side, allowing the rope to drop on to the floor next to the platform. Hopefully Professor Williams could deal with it.

This rope was a nuisance and Penny did not want it back, thank you very much. "Protego" She cast, keeping a barrier between herself and the levitating burning rope until Harper removed it. She hoped that was the last time fire would make an appearance today. "Stupefy" She cast at the earliest opportunity she had.

Harper grinned. This was just the spell she'd been waiting for. She flung herself to the ground, flailing her limbs to make the sound of the impact as loud as possible. It was almost a shame that she was invisible because Harper was sure she'd just put on a top-notch performance of a person being knocked out. Then she lay still. The seconds ticked by at an agonizingly slow pace, but she needed to wait long enough for Penny to think her spell had actually hit. Harper's whole body ached, but it would be worth it if the ruse worked. After a few moments, she pointed her wand at Penny and whispered, "Stupefy."

From watching the traveling jet of red light fizzle off into the background, it was obvious that Penny had not successfully stunned Harper. But she had heard the thud as if it had been a hit. Penny didn't know what had happened but had a pretty good idea when the same red jet came back at her to block. This was another of Harper's tricks and although amusing for Penny to observe, she could not let her guard down for a moment. "Nice try, Expelliarmus."

Harper smiled. The trick might not have worked, but it sounded like she'd managed to keep Penny on her toes. Duels could get repetitive, and she was enjoying the chance to try out new spells and tricks. This was certainly a lot more fun than last year. Harper decided to remain on the ground, watching Penny's spell shoot well overhead. Then, as noiselessly as she could, she got up and swiftly took a few steps forward before throwing a "Confringo" at Penny's feet. Hopefully shortening the distance would make the impact of the spell more powerful.

Penny jumped out of the way of a small explosion at her feet, barely keeping her balance before sending back her own offensive. She needed to level the playing field by making it that Harper couldn't see her either. "Obscuro"

Despite having seen the Blasting Curse used twice so far today, Harper still flinched a little at the explosion. Maybe casting it at short-range wasn't that great of an idea. It could be more powerful, yes, but she also risked putting herself in the blast radius. The good news was that the spell seemed to have knocked Penny off-balance, and Harper was quick to duck under the flying scrap of black fabric while simultaneously sending back a "Confundo."

Penny blocked Harper's spell then decided to use a simple spell that she had learnt years back, "Tarantallegra." Both girls were in this duel to win and it was only a matter of time before a victor was be declared.

Harper sidestepped the spell, shooting Penny a curious look — not that the other girl could see it, of course. Was she getting tired? She had thought Penny was in this to win it, but maybe not if she was throwing jinxes primarily designed to humiliate at an invisible target. Harper took a few steps back and to the side before throwing another "Confringo" at Penny's feet. As violent as the spell was, it had also been the one she'd had the most success with all day. At the very least, maybe all the debris on Penny's side of the platform would serve as a nuisance.
