René tried not to fidget as he joined the team for try-outs again. He'd done this once before last year and it had been pretty nerve wracking, even despite him having asked Sully a million questions about what to do. But this year he'd be doing something completely different, trying for a completely different position, and René just hoped it wasn't a huge mistake. He'd talked to Tilly about it, but he still had his doubts. He may have not felt like the best chaser, but at least he had played the position and even scored in a game. Beater was a complete unknown, not to mention Connor was one of the captains now, and he'd know if René was messing up.
Taking a breath to psych himself up, René stepped forward as tryouts began, clearing his throat as he addressed the captains. "René Tofilau, I'm trying out for beater this year," he said, trying to focus on kicking off into the air and not on the captains' reactions. He took a few laps just making sure he had his balance, one hand now occupied by the beater's bat which still felt a little strange. He took a swing at a passing bludger, wincing as he missed and wobbled awkwardly on his broom. His next few attempts were much the same and René embarrassment was fading away to frustration as he shot after one of the bludgers. They weren't as scary when he had a bat in his hand. Finally, René landed a solid hit, feeling it reverberate all down his arm and watching with a mad grin as the bludger shot in a straight line across the pitch. He hadn't managed to hit anything with it, but he'd hit the bludger! Looping around the pitch, René landed a few more hits, still caught off guard by the bludgers' strength when they collided with his bat. His next hit, René nearly dropped off his broom when he turned to see the bludger collide with another beater. He had been trying to hit them, but it still caught him by surprise. Maybe he could get the hang of it after all. René only managed a scant few hits that actually went somewhere before tryouts ended and his arms and shoulders ached like nothing he'd felt chasing, but he hoped it was enough promise to land him another spot on the team.
