Leading the first batch of duelists onto the stage, Katherine gestured for them to take their positions on opposite ends, and briefly explained the rules and formalities as a refresher, though by now everyone both competing and spectating was bound to know them. With all said and done, the Headmistress took her place on a raised podium overlooking the stage and the crowd gathered around it, before taking her wand to her throat. "Bow and commence." Her voice boomed clearly, informing the competitors that they were welcome to begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

After winning the duelling tournament for her year group last year, Diana was feeling pretty confident. She stepped onto the stage and smirked at Arvel. She had beaten him before. After a quick bow, Diana shot her first spell at him. "Stupefy!"

Arvel was determined to win the duelling tournament once before he graduated. He had been practising hard for weeks, spending more time in the dungeons than he did on the quidditch pitch. He wasn't sure why it was so important to him. It just was. He bowed at Diana and took his position, concentrating on her movements. When she cast the first spell, he was ready. "Protego. Confundo!"

Diana had rather hoped she would get this duel over with quickly, but it seemed like Arvel insisted on fighting back. Whatever. She blocked his spell and then cast another one at him, deciding on a jelly fingers curse as she hoped it would make him drop his wand if it hit.

Arvel barely even looked at Diana's face. He couldn't afford to get distracted. He raised another shield to deflect her jelly-fingers curse, then quickly fired off a jelly-brain jinx in retaliation.

Diana noticed how Arvel wasn't looking at her as they dueled. He seemed to be very focused, which showed. Arvel seemed to have improved a lot, which wasn't good. Diana blocked his next spell, then spoke. "Too bad you're facing off against me for your first match. Do you really think things will be different than last year?" She said, before firing off a disarming spell. Last year she had beaten him, and if she could make him insecure enough it might happen again now.

Arvel wasn't expecting Diana to speak. He blinked, his concentration completely broken. He managed to raise a shield in time to block her next attack, but suddenly couldn't think of a single spell to fire back. Racking his brain only made the problem worse, like trying to recall the details of a fading dream. Seconds felt like hours. Why couldn't he think of anything?

Analei loved the duelling tournament, and though she knew that if they both kept winning, they'd go up against each other, she wanted Arvel to win. She would love it if the final was between the two of them, and though she knew she wouldn't go easy on him, she didn't think she'd be upset if she lost against him. But only him; if it were any one else Analei would be upset.
Watching the match, Analei scowled as when Diana spoke to him. Arvel seemed to have frozen. "Come on Arvel! You got this!" She called out, urging him to hex the living daylights out of the girl.

Diana was delighted when her words seemed to affect Arvel. He didn't even cast a spell back at her, and she raised her wand triumphantly. But then Analei had to shout something, and Diana rolled her eyes. "Smart of her, she just wants an easy win next round." She told Arvel with a grin. "Everyone knows you'd let her win if you two had to duel. Silencio!" She hoped that adding the spell right at the end of her sentence might catch him off guard.

Arvel heard Analei, but he couldn't spot her in the brief second he spared to glance into the crowd. His grip tightened around his wand. Ignore it. Rise above it. Well, he was trying. Unfortunately, the effort it was taking to ignore Diana's comments was preventing him from doing anything else. He deflected her silencing charm instinctively, and then fired back the only spell he could think of: "Obscuro!"

Diana had hoped that Arvel had been close to giving up, but he kept going. The corners of her mouth turned down in disappointment. She guessed Analei's words had helped him despite her best efforts. Diana blocked his spell and scowled before casting one of her own. "Petrificus Totalus!"

Sweat beaded on Arvel's forehead. He couldn't let himself get knocked out in the first round. Not after all his practising. "Protego," he said quickly. "Expelliarmus!"

Ugh, could Arvel just lose already? It was clear he wasn't having a great time, but Diana was getting pretty tired too. She blocked his next spell with a scowl. "Stupefy!" She yelled, growing irritated.

Arvel was so busy racking his mind for more creative spells to cast that he hesitated for just a second too long. The last thing he remembered was a bright light slamming into his chest and the feeling of being lifted off his feet; then everything went dark.

Willow had just won her match. and instead of heading out of the duelling chamber she took a seat in the spectator area to watch the following matches. it would be good to see who she might be against next round. and maybe get some ideas from the older student's duel. plus she didn't want to miss her cousin. as the fight between Arvel and Diana started to get tense she ran her hand through her hair a habit she didn't even realise she had until her hand was on her head and there was no hair there for her to hook her fingers through. she smiled. that would take a lot of getting used to. that is if she decided to keep it and not grow it back. she watched as the match progressed. she was not a fan of Diana which was partly because of her snarky personality which was everything willow didn't want to be but also because she had embarrassed herself big time in their duel last year. with bloody potatoes. she didn't really mind who won. if it was Arvel then Dianna would be out first round which would be funny seeing as she had won last year. If it was Dianna then she would get the chance for a rematch, where she would be focused and not get as distracted. it was clear both participants were getting annoyed and tired as the bantering stopped and the spells became more curt. eventually, Dianna with no intent on being sneaky stunned the opponent with a loud stunning spell. which was apparently what was needed because next thing Arvel was on the floor and there was a chance that she would be facing Diana in one of the next rounds
