Second Years, Lesson Two

"Good morning, everyone," Gabrielle greeted, leaning back on the desk and carefully gripping it to support herself. It was heavily weighted so it wouldn't slide back. That was the last thing she needed, especially after slamming her face into a door in front of her fourth years. "I hope you are all prepared to take notes. We have a bit of a lecture today, but it's a fun one, I assure you." Gabrielle, the former Ravenclaw prefect, probably had a very different definition of 'fun' to a lot of the students, but she'd at least try to keep this one light hearted, because it was quite a silly piece of history when you thought about it.

"You're no doubt all familiar with animagi from your Transfiguration class, yes? One of the first recorded notable animagi was Proteus, a figure from Greek history. You may see him referred to as a god of prophecy, as he was known for his vast knowledge and foresight - and perhaps in some tellings, the far less helpful hindsight, which we are all masters of," Gabrielle joked, raising an eyebrow. "My point is, Proteus was so highly sought after for his powers of prophecy that he would frequently transform in to a variety of creatures in order to avoid being hounded. Indeed, the word 'protean', meaning something that is easily changeable or versatile, comes from Proteus himself." Gabrielle had to stop herself, else she'd go on too much of a tangent and not have enough time to finish giving her students all the information they needed.

"Anyway, so we have our first major recorded animagus. Now, you know that animagi can only change between human and one type of creature, correct? But this seemingly wasn't the case for Proteus, nor was it the case for Merlin, of course, nor Madame Mim. She was one of Merlin's most powerful foes, and used her mastery of Transfiguration to great effect in a notorious battle against Merlin. And here's where it gets fun, and a little ridiculous."
Gabrielle couldn't help but grin. "So to start, in order to intimidate and presumably to defeat Merlin, Madame Mim transfigured herself in to a dragon." Gabrielle paused, quirking an eyebrow again. "Whether this is actually possible with magic is a source of historical debate but let's just say it was a dragon, to keep it brief. Merlin, in his wisdom, turned himself into a field mouse, and nibbled on the dragon's tail."

"So, to counter, she transfigured into a cat. You might think then that Merlin would become a dog, perhaps, but no, he also transfigured into a cat, which successfully threw Madame Mim off for a few moments. Until she then transformed into a dog, which he also copied. Like when your sibling copies everything you say just to annoy you. Except on the scale of a battle between two extremely powerful wizards. You can imagine she would have been infuriated."
She was sure some students could relate - there were some things about kids that never seemed to change.

"Madame Mim transformed into a tree, expecting Merlin to copy her. But he did not - he turned into a bird, so the story goes, then Madame Mim turned into a snake on the tree branches to eat the bird, but bird-Merlin turned into a gnat at the last second and flew away...you get the picture. They carried on like this for a long time, a constant stalemate of strategic transformations. Finally, though, Madame Mim turned herself into an aullay, a large horse with the trunk of an elephant, and charged at Merlin, who disappeared completely. Or so it seemed...because suddenly, the aullay became horrifically ill, falling to its death after breaking out into various diseases rapidly. This is the important part, by the way, I'd make a note of this for your exams - it turns out, Merlin had turned himself into germs, so to speak, bombarding Madame Mim with illness, an exceptionally clever play."

Gabrielle downed the rest of her glass of water, giving the students a smile after she did. "Perhaps it's for the best that animagi can't typically shapeshift so freely. Of course, the story has become embellished in the retelling, as perhaps the laws of Transfiguration may have a few issues with the facts of the story. But that is why we are historians, is it not? We take the kernels of truth from historical tall tales, like how perhaps the transfigurative abilities of Proteus, Merlin and Madame Mim have become exaggerated, but the fact that they have even been recorded at all goes to show how far back we can date recordings of animagi. And there are similar stories in different mythologies too, like Ceridwen and Taliesin, or Andvari, or Veles, which makes you really think there must be something to it all. But perhaps the lesson learned can be one of how being strategic and able to think on your feet are very useful skills to have. Something to think about if you're looking to start dueling this year." The bell sounded for the end of the lesson and Gabrielle waved her wand to open the door again. "Since you all listened so patiently, no homework today. Go enjoy your afternoon."

Tori made her way slowly into the class, rubbing her shoulder as she did so. She'd somehow managed to wrench her shoulder on a run this morning and she knew it was going to bother her for weeks now. She could probably go and see the nurse, but it was just s shoulder twinge so she didn't really see the problem. Once she was sitting down, she listened as the professor talked about the history of the animagi which was all really fascinating stuff. She struggled to take notes because her shoulder was hurting and so half way through the lesson she gave up, she would just have to hope someone took notes that she could copy off of. The stories were really interesting to listen to and they had a moral about really knowing what you were getting yourself into. However, it was the whimsical and somewhat absurd duel between Madame Mim and Merlin that truly held her attention. Tori thought it genuinely funny when the image of Merlin the Mouse came into her mind, seeing him nibbling a dragon's tail and she wished she could draw just so she could draw the scene she could see in her head. As the lesson wrapped up with the clever twist of Merlin transforming into germs, Tori leaned back in her seat, impressed by the strategic brilliance of it all. No homework? Even better. She left the classroom with a grin, trying to think of how she might have used transfiguration to outwit her enemies, if she'd had any.​
 
Eli was angry at Lili. He didn't want to be, honestly, but she'd potentially damaged his already tenuous relationship with his brother and he didn't even know how to fix that damage he'd done himself let alone to fix the damage someone else had done. Unfortunately Lumos had been there, because he was basically a drama magnet and as much as he might have been friends with Jonah (why exactly Eli could not for the life of his understand) he liked to make wedges. Well, in Lumos' defence he wasn't trying to make a wedge, probably, but honestly if Lumos hadn't told him he probably wouldn't have found out about it unless Lili herself said something. As such, when he walked into History of Magic he didn't even look at Lili or sit near her like he normally would, instead he walked straight to the other side of the room and say anywhere that was available. Maybe they'd work things out, maybe they wouldn't but the the moment at least, Eli wasn't in the mood to talk to Lilith. She should have stayed out of it.

As the lesson began, Eli took notes about the material, finding himself specifically intrigued but the idea of animagi again. It was something he was really interested in and one of the reasons he really enjoyed Transfiguration class. He wasn't sure if all this stuff about Merlin was true, but he had grown up a little on some of the Japanese stories, and one of his favourites of course involved the Tanuki which was one of his favourite animals growing up, though as far as he was aware most of those involved the transformation of animals into people, but then, some people might not have realised the difference and it wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility for wizards to make muggles think that anyway. The idea of becoming something else was fascinating for Eli, and he wanted to be able to learn enough to do that. When the professor tied it back to the importance of adaptability and strategy, Eli nodded subtly, already mulling over how such lessons might apply to his own studies. When the lesson finished up, Eli tucked his notes into his robes before heading out the door.​
 
Vikram was content. He was just a very chill guy, happy with life, happy with his routine, his schedule. He did want to try to make some more friends, though. He decided to try and start in classes, be a little more social. He packed his bag and headed to class, and with goals in mind, he sat down with someone new. He smiled at @Victoria de Lacey before turning his attention to the Professor. He always enjoyed these lectures, just enjoying the note taking aspects of it all. He took out his parchment and quill. The subject was just fascinating. By the time they were dismissed, he'd gotten several good paragraphs of notes. Pleased, he put his things away and headed back out. This was definitely his favorite class.
 
History of Magic was one of Lilith's personal favorite lessons, who was she kidding all of them were, either way she loved learning the old tales that were either true or just less so. Lilith arrived and noticed Eli being off, he was avoiding her it would have been normal had it been anyone but, she pushed the fact to the back of her mind focusing on her lesson. As much as she wanted to figure out what was going on, she wanted to do well in her classes more. This weeks lesson was truly interesting and Lilith perked up at the mention of Transfiguration, the subject she had fallen in love with last year. Each word brought a feeling of excitement to the second year and she was fascinated by these tales, whether they were fully true or a stretch of truths, she did not care. Lilith took notes when she could, mostly just noting down to do her own research on this outside of the lesson. She actually wanted to know more. As the lesson drew to an end the Ravenclaw was thoroughly pleased by the content of it and left the room feeling happy, that was until she remembered the headache of having to soon figure out what had soured the things between her and Eli.
 
Asher Styx-Potter was having a good time in school so far, and thought that the siblings would have some decent grades. He wanted nothing more than to make his moms proud. Both of them would be, he felt. His dad would probably love him no matter what he did. Asher looked over his belongings and saw that he was ready to go. Was he going to be late? No, he seemed to be doing well with it so far. He wondered how his siblings were doing, and left to head out to the next class. At least his relatives would always be near. One way or another.

Asher entered the History of Magic classroom. He looked around to see if he saw his sisters, and then sat down where he had the previous lesson. He took out his parchment, ink and quill, and got started on the notes. Proteus was the first animagus recorded. Well, first major. There was likely more. Merlin and Madam Mim and Proteus could all turn into different animals. No one could do that now. The story between Madam Mim and Merlin made him laugh softly to himself as he tried to take notes without it looking silly. Professor Moncrieffe mentioned a couple of other names that he knew he would have to look up. He packed his belongings and left upon dismissal to go research on his own.
 
William was reluctantly prepared to take notes once he had settled into his seat in history of magic. It would be a long lesson and he hoped it would be an interesting one as they were discussing notable figures from history. He took out a roll of parchment and began taking notes once the lecture began and Professor Moncrieffe started discussing Proteus, Merlin and Madame Mim, all important figures in history each with interesting stories. William got as much of the information down about them as he could based on how he was able to keep up with the pace of the lecture. Once the lesson was over William finished up his notes and and packed them away, relived there was no homework he made his way out of the classroom.
