Open Phoenix Scouts: Petting Zoo

As was the case with seemingly anything Lysander had asked for lately, his father had not entirely been on board with lending out some of the menagerie pets to him until he'd stressed how important they were for Kauri and the scouts. It was quickly becoming frustrating. A fairy or a flobberworm didn't come close to comparing to a basilisk, but it seemed that no matter what magical creature he was involved with, his parents felt the need to keep a close eye on him and question everything. He was glad they'd relented in the end - he was particularly enjoying volunteering with the scouts, so much so that it was easy to forget that it was all part of being sentenced with community service, and it felt good to be able to contribute in more ways. He had been somewhat worried about helping out there at first, especially when they started to cover caring for magical pets, of all things. It had felt like only a matter of time before a parent said something about him being there, the apparent worst role model for kids when it came to taking care of creatures, but so far, so good.

Lysander hovered around Kauri while the older guy explained the day's activities. He was almost excited to see how well the younger scouts did in practice, after going over animal care in the last few meetings. While some people might have debated it, he liked to think this was his forte, and he wanted to be able to help out, do some good where he could. He did have to pause momentarily, sparing Kauri a brief glance at his comment on finding an adult for help if the kids needed it. Was that what he was now, too? An adult? It didn't feel quite that way most days, even now. He hung back while everyone dispersed to look at the animals, though it wasn't long before one of the kids was running up to Kauri to tell on another. Something about pygmy puffs not eating boogers. "Well, actually.." He began to chime in, quickly stopping himself when he realised it probably wasn't really his place. He did have to grimace as the young girl continued with some of the comments that had been made. "Oh man, kids are mean." He murmured quietly. It had barely been a few minutes and there was already name calling.

Sybil looked at the boy expectantly and wasn’t pleased with his answer. Maybe he was younger than she thought. “You think? Why don’t you know?” she asked when he said he didn’t know if they were his cousins. She felt like that was something you would know. She only had one cousin. But he was much older than her and lived far away but she still knew he was her cousin. Sybil didn’t get a chance to ask any other questions since she was interrupted by one of the older girls. She told her to follow along and she hesitated glancing back at the girl who had gone to Kauri. With a shrug she decided to follow them to the flobberworms. They at least seemed like they were doing the assignment which was why she was there after all. “Um, ok.” she said reluctantly when the one with red hair told her to make sure the other girls didn’t join them. "What does the sign say?" she asked. "What do flobberworms eat?"
