Fifth Years; Lesson One

Professor Lyra Potter stood at the front of the class, anxiously waiting for her students to arrive. The brunette was thrilled to be back in the castle with a permanent teaching position. Oddly enough, it was a position that belonged to her grandmother for quite a while, and most recently, it belonged to her step-grandfather. Lyra knew this was an important year for the fifth years. It was the year they sat their OWL exams. The were going to be under the most pressure that they will have had at school so far, and she wanted them to feel prepared. She smiled at them all as they entered the room.

"Welcome back to Transfiguration. I am Professor Lyra Potter, and I will be your professor for the next three years. I'm looking forward to getting to know each of you better. Please know, my door is always open if you need anything. " Lyra said, introducing herself. She clapped her hands together before moving around the room. "This year we will be learning yet another new type of spell.. You need to be ready to sit your OWLs later on this year and these are going to be on the exam." She flicked her wand at the board and the words Vanishing Spells appeared in block printing. "Vanishing Spells are an interesting sort of magic. They are used to make something disappear, just like their name says." She gave the class a look that let them know that she knew just how obvious she was being. "Now, we are going to discuss a bit of theory, then get into the pronunciation of the spell and how to use it."

Professor Potter took a few steps forward, walking to the front of her desk. "Now, Vanished items are gone. They are moved into nothingness. They are not just made to be invisible, but instead actually disappear. There is some discussion on whether they are actually transferred to another plane of existence, but that is still being researched through the Ministry, and we won't dwell on it. My Transfiguration Professor when I was in school used to say that the items go into non-being, which is everything. So you may choose to believe that the items we will vanish this term are now part of everything, or you may believe they are simply gone. That I will leave up to you to decide what makes most sense for you until the Ministry tells us otherwise." She smiled at her students, then walked back to the board.

She tapped the board and the words disappeared and new words appeared.
Evanesco Pronounced "ev-an-ES-ko"

"This is the spell we will be using this term. I would like everyone to say it with me." The class repeated the spell with Lyra three times. "Wonderful. I do believe you are all saying it correctly. Now, we will be starting out small next week, moving on to larger and more difficult objects for vanishing as the term progresses. As always, if there are any questions, feel free to contact me. My office door is always open." She smiled brightly at the students, then motioned to them they were dismissed. "No homework this week. You are dismissed. We will get right to work next time so make sure you bring your wands. If you have any questions, feel free to stop by for a chat on the way out."

With that, Professor Potter moved to sit down at her desk, preparing her lesson for the next class.

Please rp the lesson. Most of this year's class points will be based on your rps

Aura sat in the back of the classroom, her gaze flicking between Professor Potter and the other students listening intently. As the lesson began, she felt her excitement take hold, wanting to learn everything she could about transfiguration. She had heard so much about the pressure this year would bring with the upcoming OWLs. Professor Potter was making it clear that this class was not a repeat of what they had already learned, this was the real deal. Aura didn't know much about the woman, but she felt like she liked her, since she seemed to stand on business and Aura could appreciate that. Soon, she was introducing the concept of vanishing spells and her interest was quickly piqued. The idea of making something truly disappear, not just invisibility, was fascinating. She had always been drawn to the more advanced magic, wanting to know how far she could stretch it. When they began repeating the spell, she did so as well, "Evanesco, Evanesco," It was a good reminder that precision was key in Transfiguration.

When the class was dismissed without homework, Aura lingered for a moment, her mind racing with the possibilities of what they might be vanishing next. She made a mental note to visit Professor Potter’s office later that week, curious about the nuances of the spell and eager to get a head start on the term’s assignments. She was determined to excel and prove that she was more than just another student. She'd come here with a mission, but that didn't mean she could excel on her own beyond that. This was her year.

Marley had decided to give transfiguration another go, especially since she knew the subject wasn't her strongest suit, but she still wanted to give it another go. The Hufflepuff quickly packed up the things she needed for the lesson before quickly making her way up to her transfiguration classroom. Marley decided to take a seat near the back of the room. Once she had taken a seat, she took out the things she needed and placed them on the desk in front of her, as she waited for the lesson to begin.

Marley moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started off with the lesson. The Hufflepuff thought that the professor was nice enough. She listened carefully to what the professor had been saying, nodding her head to show that she was understanding the content, as well as writing notes down of what the professor was saying as well. It wasn't long before they had to learn how to say a new spell they were learning today. "Evanesco" Marley says, saying it slowly before pronouncing it properly and getting it right, which she was glad.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Marley quickly packs up her things as well as tidied up her area. She then says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor, before heading out of the classroom with her friends and classmates.

Callie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room. It might be a new professor but she knew that change in room wasn’t changing the layout. She took out her notes, books and her wand, placing them all upon her desk as the professor got started. She was keen to learn about vanishing items but was unsure as to how to feel about where vanished items went. She took a few notes as the professor was talking, making sure that she wasn’t missing any part of what the professor was saying, making sure to copy down the spell and how it was pronounced. They didn’t actually get to do the spell in the class but she didn’t mind this, she knew it would give her more time to read more about it.

Enoch stepped into the transfiguration classroom and took a seat at the back of the room. He glanced towards the front of the room where the professor was getting started on the lesson. He took a quill and had it in his hand as the professor began telling them about what they would be covering within the lessons. He had hoped the professor would just get straight into it, wasting no more time with it than to just jump in with the spell, but after the explanation. The wand movement and the pronunciation, the professor didn’t let them do it, they would have to wait until the following lesson before they did. That felt silly. But he packed up his things and left the room.

Friday walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her spot in the room. She was very keen to immediately get started on what they would be covering within the semester. She couldn’t wait to do the spell itself, but quickly Friday could tell they wouldn’t actually be doing it yet. She leaned back in her chair and was listening vaguely but was rather bored of it, just wanting to just get to actually doing the spell rather than learning about it. The lesson wrapped up and Friday packed up her things and then left the room.

Lucy was intrigued about what they'd be learning this year in transfiguration. Her question was answered almost straight away - vanishing spells. It sounded a bit strange to her to be doing something when people still didn't know exactly what was happening when you did it. But maybe nothing bad seemed to have happened so it was okay. Lucy made sure she had the pronounciation down, knowing it was important. She overdid the syllabic stress for a few times, then started saying it properly. That felt pretty good. Spell would be next week, but Lucy figured she might get some early practice in just in case she ended up finding it hard to just vanish something small. Once the lesson was over, Lucy packed away her things and went on her way.

Veronica was glad to see aunt Lyra back teaching at Hogwarts and even more so that she was teaching the upper years now that she herself had joined those ranks. She had proven to be a very good teacher which Veronica shouldn’t have been surprised by, she had always been a warm and encouraging presence for her when visiting her aunt and uncles home. Honestly, she didn’t understand how her Uncle Ezra had ended up with someone like her, she was way too good for him.

They would be learning the vanishing spell during the semester so Aunt Lyra spent the lesson going through the basics, explaining where vanished items went which Veronica wasn’t sure made much sense, but she got it down in her notes nonetheless, and then they went onto pronouncing the incantation. Her mind briefly thought about the people she could vanish, but that was probably frowned upon. She repeated the incantation along with her classmates, pretty confident she was getting it right but she would have to wait until the next lesson to try it out. Once the lesson was over Veronica packed everything up and made her way out of the classroom.

Teddy recognised Professor Potter from when she covered Charms a couple of years back and was perfectly fine with seeing her return, she had seemed like a good teacher from what Teddy remembered. At least it wasn’t his dad teaching this class, he had taken on lower years instead and the timing couldn’t have been better Teddy thought as he slid into his seat for the lesson. He was jotting down notes as Professor Potter introduced the Vanishing spell to the class and told them it wasn't really known what happens to vanished items. Teddy felt like this was an important detail they should know before teaching it, but obviously the school did not agree. When it came time to practice the pronunciation, Teddy joined in with the rest of the class. “Evanesco,” he repeated. He felt impatient waiting until next week to try the spell as that was ages away. Feeling a little disappointed, he packed up his notes at the end of the lesson and filed out of the classroom with his classmates.

Millie was glad to see that Aunt Lyra was back in a classroom after her brief stint as a temporary professor. She’d been a good teacher and had hoped she’d find her way back to the school in a permanent capacity, and there she was and would be teaching them until they left the school. She got into the classroom and listened as her aunt started explaining the vanishing and where vanished items went. It sounded quite fascinating, Millie had a feeling she would struggle with the spell itself but she would do her best and Veronica could always help her if it came to it, assuming her sister could stop staring daggers into the back of Teddy’s head long enough to focus on anything else. Millie spoke the incantation out loud with her classmates making sure it sounded right to her. She would ger to try it properly during their next lesson but for now she was happy with how things had gone so far.

Dominic was glad to be back for his fifth year. He was mostly excited to play some more quidditch, but was also excited for his sister Marley who had earned herself a prefect badge. He knew she deserved it and was looking forward to seeing her grow with the new title. The Hufflepuff had his first week of classes for that semester to attend, so he packed everything that he needed before heading to them.

Dominic entered the Transfiguration classroom, nodding in greeting to the professor as he passed her. She hadn't taught them before and so Dominic was looking forward to learning more about the professor during the semester. He listened as she began the lesson's material. She spoke about vanishing spells. There was only one incantation, which Dominic repeated with the rest of the class, and so the Hufflepuff thought that hopefully it wouldn't be too difficult. As the lesson came to an end, Dominic thanked the professor before heading out of the classroom.

Vanity didn't think the year had gotten off on a very good start. Not only did she have a new annoying roommate, she got a prefect's badge she didn't want and had to patrol with Lucy of all people. She also knew the OWL year was supposed to be a difficult one, though Vanity didn't really care that uch about her grades. She figured she could skate by with an A as usual.

The Slytherin took a seat in the back of the room and doodled on a scrap of parchment as she listened to the professor. It was a new one, and she supposed she would have to get used to that this year. She listened vaguely as the professor talked about the OWLs and then told them they would be focusing on Vanishing spells this year. She took a few notes on the spell, but didn't think it sounded all that interesting. There was a lot of talk about what happened to things when they disappeared, but Vanity couldn't imagine anyone actually cared to know. She said the incantation along with the rest of the class but didn't try very hard to keep up. She was glad when they had no homework and quickly got up once they were dismissed.

Audrey had to admit she was actually a little disappointed that Professor Styx had gone. Not that she had any personal attachment to the man, but he had such a reputation that Audrey had been looking forward to proving herself to him. That would've been a great challenge. But apparently he'd had enough (or maybe finally dropped, he was about a million years old) and Professor Potter was back from Charms to Transfiguration. Oh well, she thought. At least Transfiguration was still a great subject.

Audrey took notes on vanishing spells, curious about where vanished objects might go if even the Ministry wasn't able to say with one hundred percent certainty. Audrey wondered if the Ministry ever got anything done. Sometimes it didn't feel like they did. Audrey said the incantation with the rest of the class, making sure she was putting the emphasis on the right syllable. She wanted to get right to the spell but they'd have to wait until the next lesson, unfortunately. Something to look forward to at any rate.
