Professor Lyra Potter stood at the front of the class, anxiously waiting for her students to arrive. The brunette was thrilled to be back in the castle with a permanent teaching position. Oddly enough, it was a position that belonged to her grandmother for quite a while, and most recently, it belonged to her step-grandfather. Lyra knew this was an important year for the fifth years. It was the year they sat their OWL exams. The were going to be under the most pressure that they will have had at school so far, and she wanted them to feel prepared. She smiled at them all as they entered the room.
"Welcome back to Transfiguration. I am Professor Lyra Potter, and I will be your professor for the next three years. I'm looking forward to getting to know each of you better. Please know, my door is always open if you need anything. " Lyra said, introducing herself. She clapped her hands together before moving around the room. "This year we will be learning yet another new type of spell.. You need to be ready to sit your OWLs later on this year and these are going to be on the exam." She flicked her wand at the board and the words Vanishing Spells appeared in block printing. "Vanishing Spells are an interesting sort of magic. They are used to make something disappear, just like their name says." She gave the class a look that let them know that she knew just how obvious she was being. "Now, we are going to discuss a bit of theory, then get into the pronunciation of the spell and how to use it."
Professor Potter took a few steps forward, walking to the front of her desk. "Now, Vanished items are gone. They are moved into nothingness. They are not just made to be invisible, but instead actually disappear. There is some discussion on whether they are actually transferred to another plane of existence, but that is still being researched through the Ministry, and we won't dwell on it. My Transfiguration Professor when I was in school used to say that the items go into non-being, which is everything. So you may choose to believe that the items we will vanish this term are now part of everything, or you may believe they are simply gone. That I will leave up to you to decide what makes most sense for you until the Ministry tells us otherwise." She smiled at her students, then walked back to the board.
She tapped the board and the words disappeared and new words appeared.
"This is the spell we will be using this term. I would like everyone to say it with me." The class repeated the spell with Lyra three times. "Wonderful. I do believe you are all saying it correctly. Now, we will be starting out small next week, moving on to larger and more difficult objects for vanishing as the term progresses. As always, if there are any questions, feel free to contact me. My office door is always open." She smiled brightly at the students, then motioned to them they were dismissed. "No homework this week. You are dismissed. We will get right to work next time so make sure you bring your wands. If you have any questions, feel free to stop by for a chat on the way out."
With that, Professor Potter moved to sit down at her desk, preparing her lesson for the next class.
