Avie Mitchell had really made an effort for this yuleball, he had no date because that required asking someone and Avie didn't have anyone to ask, not that he even would want the romantic attachments of this night, he had gone to the Yuleball in previous years alone, generally running into people he knew and he'd only once attended with someone, Kris and though it had been fun, he'd yet to go with anyone else even in this friend capacity that he wanted but the teen was perfectly happy to be alone. He assumed that Lucien would be attending with his girlfriend, and that Esme would be attending with someone too, and Bothizar wasn't really the type he thought who would enjoy this night, which left Avie to attend alone. Or well, he wasn't really alone, as usual on his shoulder sat Rockie, the pet rock was a source of enjoyment and company to the otherwise alone teen. Avie could have fun without Rockie but it was fun to share the night with him he was sure.

The teen was carrying his camera around his neck and was ready to get this party started, he was both on official duty but looking for fun too. He had large pockets, ready for sweet stuffing and he was really excited about the entire event, his outfit was his old suit jacket he had been given, and the tie was an old tie of his brother's, the slightly greenish shirt was from last years Yuleball, and though Avie looked a little mix and match he was feeling pretty good about the night. He wouldn't be heading home for the holidays since the teen had decided there was little reason for him to since his mother wasn't there, but the teen was looking forward to spending time alone in the castle. He had each day planned, plenty of swimming and Avie had plans to improve his tree climbing and his spell casting of the bubble head charm, since meeting the mermaid he hadn't been able to redo the spell very well, and he really wanted some of those rocks. However, with a task at hand, the teen took his camera and began to take some pictures for the yearbook, stopping at tables with sweets on them to stuff them in his pocket.

There were many, many things that Emilee would have rathered be doing over attending a ball. She had enough of balls when she was at home, now she had to be attending one at the school too, which would do absolutely nothing for her other than annoy her. However being that Fiona so rudely decided to attend with her little friend, Emilee was forced to make herself presentable and wander down. She had no intention of staying past the time she had to and would take no pleasure in the event, yet she would do her duty and play nanny to her sister. She was glad of the fact that she had only one miscreant sibling to eye with Florence paying no mind to the festivities, which was just as well. Keeping an eye on two wayward siblings was not easy, especially when one had a knack for disappearing. Still, she supposed she needed to get out more and being in a social setting ought to help, not that she believed she needed it. She spoke to the necessary people, she needed no one beyond what she perceived to be her only friend. Still, it was nice to be wearing a formal dress again. The school uniform was uncomfortable and itchy and she would refuse to wear it if she could. At least it was mostly feminine.

As Emilee actually made her way into the hall, she made sure to keep an eye on her sister. She didn't want to lose her in the crowd too early and find out that she'd snuck in an after party or some such. She didn't know much about Fiona's personality, but if she was anything like Florence, well, that Arnost kid was in for a ride. She stayed by the walls as much as possible, trying to avoid the eyes and the attempts at conversation. The blank expression on her face did well to keep most people away from her. She didn't know any of these people and felt no fealty to them.Just as she didn't know them, they didn't know her and she wished to keep it that way. It wasn't long until she spotted that weird kid that she'd seen hanging around Bothizar in the common rooms or in the corridors. Emilee didn't really know much about him, let alone his name. She knew only his house, Slytherin and by the looks of it, he liked photography if the camera on his person was anything to go by. She noticed him stuffing sweets into his pocket and try as she might to keep her expression blank, it reminded her very much of her Grandmother. Very few people were as close to the late Matriarch as she was and she knew that the woman greatly enjoyed sweets, though as she was not allowed to eat them as much as she liked, she took to hiding the sweets in her pocket. Emilee didn't want to like this boy, whoever he was, but felt the need to at least be civil given that he seemed to be close to Bothizar, for whatever reason. Straightening her dress and moving along the tables to meet the boy, Emilee picked up a couple of the sweets from the other end of the table and held them out to the camera aficionado. "You enjoy sweets that much?" It was a wonder really, Emilee wasn't much a sweet person herself, but she had to admit that she enjoyed the odd nibble here and there. "Taking pictures for memories or work?"

It's not very good, I'm still a bit rusty.

Avie was definitely enjoying himself, and he was finding the balance between dancing to the music, picture taking and then stuffing sweets in his pocket, he had gotten some pretty good pictures of Jean singing, and some pretty good pictures of Clara waiting for Lucien, the boy was obviously a little jealous that they'd be spending the Yuleball without him, but he understood that Lucien wanted some time alone with his girlfriend, he had gathered that much from the need his friend to tell him about alone time and the importance of not interrupting, Avie had no idea what was so strange about interrupting kissing, since it was pretty disgusting and therefore in his mind it deserved to be stopped, but the teen continued what he was doing, taking pictures of some guy in a strange skirt, and of the professors standing watching, dancing the length of the hall as he did so, and stuffing sweets into his pockets and he knew soon they would be overflowing, he hadn't quite mastered the spells from this year, he doubted he would be able to do that spell that made things bigger on the inside so he could fit more, he guess he might have to use the inside pockets of the suit jacket.

The teen had been mid-picture taking when someone beside him spoke and he noted that she was holding out sweets, without even asking if they were actually for him, he took them and gave one to Rockie who still sat on his shoulder, who obviously couldn't eat the sweet but he was happy to give it to him, the girl in front of him, he recognised slightly, he was sure he'd seen her around Bothie, he didn't think Bothie and this girl were like Lucien and Clara, but obviously given Avie's lack of attention to most relationships there was a likelihood that he was wrong about it. But, Avie didn't care as long as no matter what she did, he still got to hang out with one of his best friends, the slingshot was a vital part of Avie's rock throwing fun, and he didn't want anyone stopping that fun. At her question he looked at the camera he was still holding and nodded, "I take pictures for the Yearbook!" he told her happily with a bright smile, "I'm Avie, Bothie's best friend," he introduced to her brightly, "Can I?" he asked her holding out the camera as if to ask if he could take a picture of her.

As the sweets were taken from Emilee's hand, she realised that there was some sort of rock on his shoulder. She heard of people having pet rocks, but they were usually children, not teenagers and he had to be nearly her age if she had to guess. It was a bit weird, more than a bit weird and she really had to wonder what Bothizar might see in this strange boy. It was bizarre, really, really bizarre. He gave one of the sweets to the rock, sitting it on his shoulder with it and Emilee raised her eyebrow slightly, a show of confusion that was likely to be missed by everyone. She turned to stand beside him then and scanned the crowd again, looking for her sister. Or Arnost. They were likely together, but she much preferred if they were separate. She looked at him as he mentioned he was on the yearbook and Emilee nodded at him in a form of a congratulations. "Really? Interesting... Do you enjoy that? They let you snap whatever you like?" Emilee had never been a fan of cameras herself, she never quite knew how to work them and there was so much effort involved, she just didn't have the time.

Bothizar's best friend was he? That would certainly explain why she saw the pair together rather often. It seemed that most people had one view or another of Avie. They liked him, or they hated him. She'd seen the looks that some people threw him and yet if the stories were to be believed, he was the stupidest, or maybe the bravest student in this entire school. Knowing his name helped in allowing Emilee to get a grasp on the kind of person he was. Avie, as in Avie Mitchell, the boy who hugged Styx. That was definitely a feat in itself. He was a man to rival her Grandmother, yet Emilee was sure the pair would not get along well at all. Hailey had a but of a complex against powerful male figures. It was why there weren't many highly respected males in her family. She was rather sexist, kind of different to how the world was many years before. Emilee bowed her head to him. "I am Emilee, Bothizar's... pen pal." There was little other way to describe them. They had not really met in the most traditional of circumstances after all and friend was a word that Emilee despised. Pen pal was going to have to do. He held his camera up to take a picture and Emilee stepped back, displaying her dress better and showing a half smile. She didn't smile often, but this was a photo, she could be a shallow in her meaning as she wanted. "Taken any pictures of a young girl with brown hair in a striped black and white dress?"

Avie didn't know too much about the girl in front of him, just that she was someone to Bothizar and Avie who while not completely there did pay attention to his friends and was a little bit protective over them, though this just manifested itself in Avie wanting to spend time with them alone, or the three of them together (with occasionally Esme), playing with the rocks or just doing something fun. He didn't particular want to have to share his friends but he knew he had to. Avie didn't know this girl, Emilee but he imagined that he would like her a lot, and if Bothie liked her then he had to like her, just like how he liked Clara, though he actually thought Clara was really nice regardless of what she was to Lucien, maybe she would be the same, "Well, I have to take pictures of everyone, but I can also take what I want," he told her, "I really like it," he said to her with a sure nod, since he really did like it, it was easy and good, and the teen found it far simpler to take pictures than to do anything else. Perhaps that would be his life following this place?

The teen frowned a little at her statement, a pen pal, what was that? The teen had no clue, he thought it was maybe about them sharing a pen, but he'd never once seen Bothie use a pen, he was always using quills, so maybe a pen pal was a pal who let you use a pen, perhaps it was a strictly magical term, but the teen didn't know, "Why did Bothie need to borrow a pen?" he asked shaking his head slightly as he failed to wrap his mind around what she was saying or what that could be about. The teen shook his head as he focused up his camera and then took the picture of the girl with a bright smile, double checking it as he asked if he had taken any pictures of a specific person, Avie just shrugged, "I don't know, you can check?" he held out the camera to her, carefully taking it off from around his neck where it usually hung and holding it out for her with a bright smile, placing on the sweets from his pocket into his mouth, the girl would likely note the slight stickiness of the camera due to Avie's sticky fingers if she opted to look for the picture of a young girl with brown hair.

Emilee nodded as Avie explained to her that he could take pictures of whatever he wanted, but that he did have a sort of schedule of what needed to be done. Well, that made sense. He was working for a specific publication and it would be rather foolish if they didn't specify what they wanted in said publication. She'd never really been around long enough to have her picture in the year book, but that was different this year. She adjusted her dress discreetly and scanned the crowd again before looking back at Avie. "Something you might pursue after Graduation then?" Emilee was still not clear on what she would do after her graduation, something that got her away from her sister, surely. She wasn't particularly interested in anything specifically, except potions and she was slowly getting a grasp on Arithmancy, but nothing really beyond that. She was hoping that Potions would be better, but she didn't really want to go into the potions aspect of her family, Kialla and Isla were involved in that and the greater distance between her and her sisters the happier about all of this she would be. "It's good to have a path laid out. I'm still searching for mine." She admitted. It was weird that she was speaking so much to this boy. She didn't usually offer so much about herself, but she just couldn't help it.

He seemed to be confused by the term pen pal, Emilee frowned a little, something she didn't like doing and shook her head. "No, that's not what it means. It's not borrowing a pen... it's, writing letters and things to each other. You know?" She wasn't sure how else to explain it really. She certainly didn't see how he couldn't have understood what he said, but perhaps he had just never had one before. Emilee couldn't be sure that she'd have understood the term had she not had a pen pal. Or was that owl pal? The terminology was the least of her worries at this precise moment. She shook her head then when he offered her the camera. "Never mind, I'll likely break it. I'll just keep looking for myself." Emilee and technology didn't get along terribly well. She tended to drop things, or they fell out of her hands because she wasn't sure how to hold it properly. Muggle contraptions confused her anyway.

At her words the boy just shrugged, after Graduation to him was so long away, he had so much time on his hands and so much to do over the next coming months, and the next few years and he was really just taking each day as it came, his inability to read which still lingered not matter the work he tried to do for it, the help of the muggle studies professor was pretty good but the teen had trouble still and in his mind his reading hadn't improved at all yet, but the motivation he felt towards trying to get it to be better outweighed his annoyance over it not being so, "I don't know if I want to take pictures forever," there was a slight whine on the word forever, clearly implying Avie' reluctance to grow up in any sense of the word. The boy then frowned further at her words, not knowing why two people who went to school together who were in the same house would need to write letters to each other, what was the point in such a thing, "Why would you be writing letters? You live in the same house," the teen asked as if she'd said the most ridiculous thing he'd ever heard.

As he held out the camera to her, he expected her to take it off him and find what she wanted, but he didn't expect her to turn down the offer and to then say that she'd break it, "It's okay, I can use magic to fix it, or if I can't I'll get a professor to!" he told her happily, although he figured that she really wasn't interested in actually checking to find the pictures which he didn't mind at all, and instead placed it back around his neck, careful to avoid knocking Rockie off his shoulder, "Do you want to look for her?" he asked, since he knew exactly what it felt like to not know where someone was and the confusion that caused, although he imagined that whomever she was looking for was not in the same situation as Avie's mother had been during that time last year.
