i have just noticed that the yule ball is in the middle os summer. however yule is the celibration of mid winter according to wikipedia however this doesn't fit in with the southern hemisphere. which as the north celebrate it they celebrate midsummer so maybe the name summer ball would be more appropriate.

Hiya

I think Nick explained this one already to someone else.
We have changed the seasons and everything to suit the southern hemisphere but are still using the northern hemisphere calender for things like halloween, easter, the yule ball etc.

We may eventually change it but for now it stays as is. When the site was created everything was pretty much in accordance with Hogwarts Scotland. ;)

Your own source said:
The festival was placed on December 25 when the Christian (Julian) calendar was adopted.
Therefore it is still December 25th as we still use the Christian (Julian) Calendar - and it's simply celebrated in the summer in the southern hemisphere. ;)
It would have never really been celebrated as a holiday in the southern hemisphere as it was anglosaxon pagan sects that made it a festival. So this being a tradition from HS makes sense.
Nicolas King rests his case. No change occurs. ^_^
