Professor Misha Haden had been a bit surprised to be asked to help out, he didn't often, but he didn't mind it. Though of course he was feeling a little more tired than usual with the boys keeping him awake. It was nice though, they were adorable. He looked at the two professors whose duel he was overseeing. "Let's keep this clean," he said, before inviting them to get started.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels. Duelers cannot cast spells at the spectators or face disqualification.

Ben is no stranger to a duel, but it has been some time since he has participated in one that was not training or with another juror - he is very curious to see how Kahurangi will fair and how she will choose to operate. He will try and read her and see how she might choose to fight, getting to know how she works. "Levicorpus!"

After last year's dueling touranment, Kahurangi had a lot to prove. She had always done well in tournaments in the past, but beating a former Auror last year had been a surprise even to her. But here she was, the reigning champion, about to face another former Auror. She half-wondered why James and Benjamin were allowed, or even wanted to duel normal professors, but she wasn't here to argue that point. She was here to win. After bowing to her opponent she took a defensive stance, waiting to see what her opponent was bringing to the table. She was ready with a shield spell, almost surprised he was starting so easy. Feeling it out, maybe, or trying to go light on a civilian. She decided to keep it simple too, hoping a chance would arise to catch him unawares later on. "Stupefy!"

"Protego, Expelliarmus." He's never been a big believer of being showy, that's where people get sloppy. Just get her wand out of her hand and go home. His father would snort.

Kahurangi wasn't sure whether Benjamin was going easy on her or just working up to something, but either way she wasn't going to take the opening for granted. She brought up a shield charm to block his spell before shifting to conjure, thick vines bursting from her wand and rushing to entangle her opponent.

Kahurangi hadn't expected her vines to be a match winner, but she hadn't expected them to be dispelled so quickly. She wasn't quite prepared for the spell coming and it hit her before she could bring up a shield, her tongue suctioning to the top of her mouth. She couldn't quite help the snort of laughter that escaped though - nonverbal casting had served her very well in previous duels, and she couldn't help but think of giving her opponent less clues as to her plans as a good thing. Feeling invigorated, she began to move her wand as though another wave of vines were coming, but with a change of angle last second she instead raised a tsunami behind her opponent's back, crashing towards him heavily.

Ben didn't even have a chance to admire how creative Kahurangi was with her spell use before he was almost hit by an unexpected tidal wave. He barely manages transfigure the water into steam. It's an unexpected play, but one he will not underestimate again. He turns back to the professor, nodding to her in admiration. "Perhaps I should be attending your classes, you're very creative," he admires, before taking a stance again and waiting for her next move.

Just like in last year's duels, Kahurangi found a thrill in managing to catch an Auror off guard. Maybe it was a good thing she had chosen teaching over crime. She tried to open her mouth to acknowledge the complement but was blocked by her tongue, and she gave a small nod instead. She was surprised when Benjamin didn't retaliate, deciding to press her advantage while she had it. With a flick of her wand she pulled the cloud of steam together into hailstones, pelting her opponent from above.

More prepared this time, he throws up a shield, and then creates a wall of fire he then throws in her direction.

Although the sudden change up nearly caught her off guard, Kahurangi was pleased to see Benjamin switching tactics. Adrenaline surged through her as she cast quickly, brow dripping with sweat even as the heat of the fire dissipated; the flames curling and knotting together as she transfigured them into a flock of Kea, the clever birds screeching in a frenzy as they tore towards her opponent, beaks and claws sharp.

It felt kind of mean to throw animals at the care of magical creatures professor, even if they are transfigured animals and not exactly flesh and blood. He waves his wand and they turn into shards of ice instead, heading back towards Kahurangi

Hoping the birds would be more of a distraction, Kahurangi hadn't quite prepared to shield in time. She resorted to dodging, shifting out of the way barely in time before the ice would have struck her. Hoping to use the change in angle to catch Benjamin off guard, Kahurangi fired back a quick stunning spell, figuring that if she was going to try to catch him unaware with a change of tactic, she may as well change tactic completely.

The change of angle hadn't served her well, but Kahurangi figured it wasn't a bad idea to keep moving. She ducked under the disarming spell and threw herself into a roll, rugby training helping her take the fall and stay cool as she extended her wand mid-roll and sent a sloppily aimed freezing spell in Benjamin's direction, aiming loosely to turn the ground beneath his feet to ice, though it would be just as likely to hit his legs or miss entirely.

Ben has to catch his balance as the ground beneath him turns to ice, being very careful to catch his footing as he carefully sidesteps the now icy patch. He raises his wand and conjures a snake he hopes will distract her long enough to set the rest of his plan in motion.
