@Eric Holland vs. @Professor Gabrielle Moncrieffe

Kahurangi had never helped run the duels before, but after having so much fun competing last year she had jumped at the chance to help out. Later on today she had a title to defend, but first she had the honour of refereeing the other staff duel, eager to see what her colleagues and potential final opponents each brought to the table this year. Keeping a particular eye on Eric out of experience, she made sure both duelists were in their proper positions before she spoke. "Alright, welcome to your first duel of the day. I expect a clean fight, but give it your all. On my mark, you may bow to your opponent, and begin. Ready?" She glanced back and forth between the two duelists, before giving a tiny nod. "Begin!"

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Gabrielle felt like a total fool lining up to actually duel this time. But she didn't often get a chance to flex her magic muscles, and she wanted to see how well she could do putting her lectures into practice. She bowed to the young caretaker with a small smile. "Do go easy on an old lady, won't you?" she joked. With that, she tilted her head slightly to the side with a raised eyebrow, and cast a silent jelly-brain jinx. She knew she should be demonstrating spellcasting more for the students, but she had to try and even the odds first by inhibiting her opponent's thinking.

Eric had thought signing up for the duelling tournament would be kind of fun, it would be something to do. He remembered his first duel as a student pretty well, how he and Sydney had both been disqualified because he had shoved her after she kept insulting him. He figured this would go very differently, but it wasn't until he faced his opponent that Eric realized he was probably a bit out of his league. All the other staff members participating were professors. They were probably in a slightly different league than him, especially Professor Moncrieffe who looked intimidating on the other end of the stage. Eric nodded stiffly at her joke, fully aware she was probably much better at this than him. He was trying his best to focus. He hadn't been a great student, and he figured that would soon be apparent. He put up a shield just in time, somehow not having expected a silent spell. Flustered, Eric realized he wouldn't be able to cast his spells like that when he felt this uneasy. He cast a spell quickly. "Langlock"

Gabrielle kept a close eye on her opponent. She knew the young man had been a student not so very long ago, but long enough that it had been before she'd commenced teaching here. How long it had been since her own school days was best not delved into. She put up a shield charm quickly, kind of relieved she'd been doing a bit of exercise on the holidays to stop herself from getting too sluggish. "Obscuro," she shot back, buying herself a little bit more time as she considered her next major move. She had to do something exciting and clever, for sure, if only for demonstrative purposes.

Eric could only feel relief when the professor's next spell wasn't nonverbal. He wondered idly if she was taking pity on him, though she didn't seem the type. He blocked her spell, then cast a new one in return. "Incarcerous!"

Ah, thought Gabrielle, cheerfully. This takes me back. Although she was a little rusty, she had in a past life best not mentioned amongst her students been pretty decent at this sort of thing. A smile crossed her face as she countered the incarcerous spell with a diffindo of her own, cutting the ropes into pieces before they could hamper her movement. Now she was starting to find the groove of it again. She pointed her wand at the ground beneath her opponent's feet. "Glisseo." Maybe she'd give the fourth years some inspiration for labyrinth traps.

Eric had known he was out of his depth since the duel started, but when Gabrielle cast a spell he didn't even know, he really knew he was f*cked. He tried to throw up a shield, but he was too late. The ground beneath him turned slippery and smooth like a slide and Eric didn't stand a chance. He slid backwards down the stage and landed on his butt, which was honestly pretty embarrassing. He could only hope not too many kids had seen it.
