@Aine Thompson vs @Monday Weeks

Angel stretched as he stepped up to the duelling platform, motioning to the two students to join him at opposite ends before surveying the crowd. Content everyone looked ready, he addressed the gathered students. "Welcome to your first round of duelling, let's have a nice clean duel today. The victor will be able to continue on to the rest of the tournament, and the loser will sadly be eliminated. When you're ready, please bow to your opponent and begin!" He said with a flourish, letting the students get started.
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

The definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. By that logic, Aine should have well and truly been committed to St. Mungo's because she was up here at the duelling tournament once more, despite the fact that every previous attempt had been an abject failure on every level. It had startedwith slug vomiting. And now she had to duel against Monday, who she knew was better than her in every way. It made the angry, rotten part of her deep in her heart stir in a longing for victory, to prove that she was better than she thought she was. Now her mind was unclear already to start, and she shook her head, bowing and trying to focus by throwing a babbling curse, as it was only fair that Monday's mouth work as poorly as her brain in this duel.

Monday Weeks didn't think signing up would be worth it, but then again, maybe it would be fun. Except who he was up against. He didn't want to fight against Aine. She was pretty much his best friend, but so it goes. He bowed and aimed his wand. The first spell was one that he had to dodge, since he wasn't sure his protego would have been strong enough. He thought quick, "Silencio."

For all Aine's fire and fury, and all her inadequacy when facing Monday, he was still her friend and she certainly didn't want to harm him. A lot of duelling spells were designed to cause harm, but Aine would avoid them if she could. She was surprised to see him dodge, only barely getting up her own shield charm in time to block his spell. Which would have been bad if it had hit, because she couldn't really do non-verbal magic yet. If he was going to dodge more than shield up, though, the best way to stop that was... "Impedimentia!"

Cameron was distantly aware that the duelling tournament would have been a surefire way to really test if his new wand was making a difference this year. Even so, he had absolutely zero desire to really put it to the test, especially if said test meant he'd probably end up duelling Aine again, or worse, Isadora. Still, he couldn't entirely quell his curiosity when he'd heard Aine had signed up for the humiliation yet again, watching pensively from the back of the chamber as she tried to take on Monday Weeks.

As fun it would be to see her lose again, Cameron was still quietly cheering for her as she just managed to pull up a shield charm. Very quietly.

Monday wondered how this would turn out, but she blocked his spell and sent out one that could definitely end the match before it started. Monday was fast, thankfully, to bring up his Protego. Since hed didn't want to actually injure her, he sent out, "Confundo!"

Aine quickly scampered out of the way, almost toppling over as she just barely dodged a spell. Self-pity bubbled to the surface, insisting that of course she'd lose, everyone was better than her. She could barely think with all the noise in her head, so maybe getting hit by the spell wouldn't have made a big deal, but she fired back in the midst of getting her balance back, hoping to get in fast with a "cr*p, obscuro!"

The next spell that Aine used was one that he had yet to even master. Monday was thankful that his protego helped block it, since he would definitely need his eyesight. He decided to try to go on the offensive, "Reducto!"

"Christ!" Aine exclaimed, barely biting back some more profane exclamations. The ground before her broke apart, destroying a majority of the stage she had to stand on. Some debris hit her leg and she stood on one foot, barely staying upright. She could have just gracefully accepted the loss, and she really should have, but losing that early felt embarrassing. "You aren't playing around, hey? Locomotor mortis!" She knew she was basically about to lose, but she could at least go down swinging. Plus, at least they'd be evenly off kilter if it did hit.

Monday winced when the spell he sent out was a bit more destructive than he originally intended. He asked, though opening himself up to being hit, "Sh*t, are you okay?" But then his legs were locked together. Monday wobbled a bit, but then ended the spell with Finite. He knew what not to cast though, and dialed it back a little bit, "Everte Statum!"

There was an intrusive darkness that lurked in Aine's heart that she tried her best to ignore, that much was obvious. It was like all the negative emotions she ever held were shoved into a box and pushed under a few coats in order to keep them at bay, rather than ever appropriately dealt with. And being on the back foot (almost literally) stoked her anger, an entitled fury that insisted everything in life was so specifically unfair to her, that it was not fair that she be made to look like an idiot, etc.. Without even thinking, she shot back with an incensed "incendio" as a rather on the nose way of expressing this, getting blown back off the platform in the process and landing on the ground with a thud. She groaned, blinking a few times and looking between her wand and what she could see of Monday. What was she doing? That was bad, even by her standards. "God...I'm sorry," she groaned, placing her free hand over her face as she lay pathetically on the ground, hoping if she waited long enough it would just swallow her whole.

Cameron stood up to get a better look as Monday practically disintegrated part of the platform Aine'd been standing on with a particularly powerful Reductor spell. As much as Aine annoyed him, even Cameron wasn't sure he'd be pleased to see her turned into red mist over a duel. He was more surprised however to find himself halfway across the room towards the stage after Aine got blown clean off of it (though not without trying to set Monday on fire first, he noted with amusement), and had to stop himself, hoveringly weirdly in the aisle of spectators before deciding to turn sharply and leave before Aine regained her senses and noticed.

Angel let out a low whistle as Monday Weeks managed to blow apart part of the duelling platform with a particularly good hit, also impressed that Aine Thompson had managed to keep her feet during it too. It was short lived however, with Aine being blasted clear off what was left of the platform not long after that. Quickly checking that Monday hadn't been singed, Angel skirted the platform to check Aine over as well before clearing his throat to address the room. "And with that, Monday Weeks is the winner, bravo!" He announced grandly. "Aine, you seeing any stars? Might want to go get that head checked in the Hospital Wing just in case," he advised her in a lower tone, barely resisting the urge to nudge her prone body with his toe just to make sure she was still moving.

"Professor, if the Hospital Wing could work out what was wrong with my head, I wouldn't be in this position in the first place," Aine groaned, smirking in spite of herself as she pulled herself up to her feet and moved over to shake Monday's hand. She had to be gracious in defeat, it was going to be a thing she'd reckon with a lot. Just like her brother's football team, who lost far more often than they won. She thought she saw someone run off out of the corner of her eye. Probably Aurora, getting ready to duel Monday for the title. She'd probably stay and watch, if she wasn't feeling too dizzy.

Monday was a little surprised that she sent out the fire spell, which did touch his robes but he managed to take them off quickly and step on the fire to put it out. Monday put his wand away and hopped off the platform after he was declared a winner. At least Aine shook his hand, but he was really worried about her. Did he go too hard on her? That was possible. His reducto spell was a lot stronger than he wanted it to be. "I didn't mean for you to get hurt, Aine. Are you going to be okay?" Monday asked. If it were anyone else, he honestly wouldn't care (and the amount he wouldn't care didn't faze him - which it should have). But this was Aine.

Aine quickly shook her head. "All good. Really. I'm sorry I almost set you on fire, I'm not really sure what happened." She did feel a little dazed, but that was probably more the adrenaline rush than any actual pain from hitting the ground. Likely she'd only have light bruising at worst from it, nothing that really needed any medical attention. "My ego was getting too big so I needed my annual humbling. Just make sure you beat Aurora, so I'm not too humbled." Maybe she did need to go lie down or something, but she'd stick around to watch the next round, stubbornly as ever.
