Hiro was pleased he had been asked to help proctor the duelling tournament again. It was something quite fun to do and he enjoyed watching the students and seeing what kind of tactics they could come up with. He was hoping to see some really good duels this year as well, smiling at the two students either side of him before clearing his throat. "Welcome to your first duel. The rules are quite simple and the winner will be moving on to the next round. But please try and keep everything above board, we want to avoid as many trips to the hospital wing as possible." While he knew it would happen, he'd rather no one got seriously injured. "If you both understand, then please bow to your opponent and you may begin!"

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Aine didn't know why she persisted in subjecting herself to this level of humiliation. She knew she wasn't good at spellcasting, especially against other people. Maybe it was misguided house pride, maybe it was unearned hubris, maybe it was the darker part of her pushing her into this. Whatever it was, she swallowed nervously as she bowed to Ngawaiata, and then wasted no time firing off a spell. It was all just a dangerous game, so this time she was going to really try. "Confundo."

After taking a year off, Ngawaiata was more eager for the duelling tournament than ever. She had a title to win back, and everything to prove. After bowing to Aine she took a defensive stance, waiting to see what her classmate would open with, gauging the other girl. Her shield charm was ready, and she quickly fired back a moment later; "Stupefy!"

It had probably been a bit too much like wishful thinking to hope this would be easy. But Aine was determined to prove herself, and hurriedly put up a shield charm to block the incoming spell. Her opponent was starting off with the classics, but Aine was hoping more to throw her off. "Rictusempra!"

Ngawaiata had already braced herself to block, the steps of the duel flowing like choreography in her mind. As her shield came back down she fired back, wand flashing as she cast. "Densaugeo!"

Try as she might, Aine could not match Ngawaiata's fluid, seemingly effortless movements, and she wasn't quite sure whether to admire her or be horribly jealous of her. Either way, her own movements were sharp and reactive and about as far from musical as one could get, hurriedly throwing up another shield charm to block the spell - thankfully - and casting the first thing that came into her mind. "Impedimentia!"

Ngawaiata kept her eyes locked on Aine's movements, hoping to catch the Hufflepuff off guard. Instead of shielding she sidestepped the next spell and fired from a different angle, trying to catch her unawares. "Expelliarmus!"

It was quite possible that Aine was hardly on guard, only her determination for self preservation (that seemed almost fraudulent by virtue of the very fact that she was duelling) keeping her on her feet, an almost fanatical drive not to fail (that would surely guarantee her failure sooner rather than later). Where Ngawaiata was graceful and measured in her movements, Aine was frantic, almost manic. She hastily shielded, barely managing to get the charm up to counter the brief feeling of losing control of her wand, before firing back a disarming spell of her own.

Aine's movement pattern was far less predictable than Ngawaiata had expected, and she was caught off guard enough to almost miss pulling her shield up in time. Determined not to show her surprise, she shifted back and retaliated quickly. "Stupefy!"

Aine's movement pattern was also less predictable than Aine expected, too. She thought she had something she could use to her advantage, but she was hindered by her own exhaustion, and her lack of refinement. Her movements were more sluggish than she would've actually liked, and so when she tried to dodge when she got tongue tied over saying 'stupefy' (much to her embarrassment) she stumbled. "Oh, sh-" she began, her swearing thankfully cut off by Ngawaiata's spell. Silently, she hoped they'd just let her stay stunned for a while so she didn't have to get up and face people.

Hiro was quick to step in to end the duel when Aine took a Stupefy, whipping out his wand and hurridly reviving the girl again. "Ngawaiata Martin is the winner!" He then announced with a smile, tucking his wand away once more, "If anyone is in need of the hospital wing, then please don't dawdle about it."
