Angel stretched as he stepped up to the duelling platform, motioning to the two students to join him at opposite ends before surveying the crowd. Content everyone looked ready, he addressed the gathered students. "Welcome to your first round of duelling, let's have a nice clean duel today. The victor will be able to continue on to the rest of the tournament, and the loser will sadly be eliminated. When you're ready, please bow to your opponent and begin!" He said with a flourish, letting the students get started.
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Please also remember site rules apply, including power/god modding. You can find the site rules here. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Aine had to have absolutely lost it. Maybe taking on all the subjects and throwing herself into everything with little care for how she could manage her time had caused something to snap. After last year, she'd had no intention of duelling again and yet here she was, squaring up against Aurora. Maybe it was a stubborn sense of pride, wanting to at least claw back some dignity after how undignified her loss was last year. Or maybe it was just the adrenaline rush. She felt almost sick from it, head spinning, but when she bowed to her opponent it was like her active mind completely shut down, and she was running on instinct, a look in her eyes that was not dissimilar to the way her boggart had looked. She raised her wand and nodded, starting off with a simple, surprisingly confident expelliarmus.

Aurora had been looking forward to this. She liked duelling, it was something fun to do and a way to practice her spells. She knew Rosie didn't like it, but was unphased by that. The gryffindor was facing off against Aine, whom she knew was friends or at least friendly with Rosie. She bowed and tried to give a warm smile to the girl. She wasn't quick enough with a shield charm and had to dodge out of the way of the first spell, but was able to follow her dodge up quickly with a slug vomiting curse

Aine instinctively flinched at the curse Aurora threw back at her, painful memories of last year's tournament poking through the haze of adrenaline. She didn't react fast enough to shield, instead dodging as quickly as her legs would let her and wobbling a bit on the spot. Oh no, not this time, she thought, narrowing her eyes and quickly firing back the first spell that came to her mind, which ended up being "...tarantallegra!"

Aurora managed to block the second spell sent her way. She immediately remembered what this was like and it was exciting but she felt a pressure to do well. She sent back one of the few spells she could do, a simple, trip jinx, cast with excited confidence.

Aine was stubborn, and determined, but she wasn't stupid. She knew Aurora was better at magic than she was and certainly a stronger duellist. Which made her feel very competitive, in honesty. She told herself she didn't have the right to be, but at the same time she couldn't deny the fire in her belly that spurred her forward, wanting to win. She was acting on impulse, knowing that she couldn't win in a straightforward show of magic. So she'd play it differently, taking the hit from the trip jinx and stumbling, careful to keep inside her spot. As she fell, she slapped the ground with her palm and her knee, tightly holding her wand and casting a quick and quiet stupefy, hoping she had at least somewhat thrown Aurora off. Her palm and knee stung, but she barely felt it through the sickly rush of adrenaline as she rushed back to her feet as fast as possible.

Aurora felt a little bad as her spell hit and Aine fell to the ground. She didn't want to hurt the other girl, not at all. It was just an unfortunate side affect of duelling. She had taken a step forward, as if to go help Aine but held herself back, just watching in concern and it was a good thing too because she was only just able to side step the spell sent her way. That was a little sneaky. But she just sent back a Jelly Brain Jinx.

Aine smirked despite herself. It had been a pretty sneaky tactic, and it had worked a little better than she had expected. Not well enough, but it had thrown Aurora off a little and that was the best she could hope for. Deep down, she felt that nauseous feeling of self-loathing for the whole thing, hating herself for doing this, but the adrenaline was still winning out. She quickly blocked the spell with a shield charm - her brain didn't need any help turning to mush, thank you very much - and fired back with a shrug and a "rictusempra!" as she continued to pick out the first spells that came to her mind. She could be strategic, but not that strategic.

Aurora remained focused on the task at hand. She blocked his spell and then cast back a quick "Stupefy," she knew this was a spell that could end the duel but she didn't have too many spells that she could actually use.

Perhaps in time, and with practice and with not denying her desire to prove herself, and to win, Aine could be a formidable duelist. Unfortunately for her, she was a fourteen year old girl who didn't really know what she was doing beyond trying to grasp at some sense of dignity from her embarrassment last year. If she was going to lose, she wanted to at least lose with grace. She was running out of steam, though, frazzled as she was. She was almpst too slow to block, just barely getting the shield up in time to deflect the bolt of light. "Accio...accio wand."

Aurora felt a little bad, she wanted to win, but she wasn't sure this victory would actually feel that good. Aurora wasn't sure why the other girl went with Accio as a spell, and she felt a tug on her wand but held tight and just sent a "Expelliarmus,"

Spite and envy were powerful motivators, but the adrenaline burst of putting oneself out there and performing in such a way could only last so long. Aine felt nauseous, her head starting to spin and the stinging in her palm and knee starting to become quite noticeable. Logically, she knew she was never going to win. Magic didn't seem to always work for her, and it really seemed to require strong emotions or duress. She wanted to succeed just to show that she could, that she wasn't completely out of her depth in a school of magic and that maybe she was worth something.

And maybe she felt jealous of Aurora, just a little. Aurora didn't struggle, she was on the Gryffindor Quidditch team, she seemed to make friends easily and she had a twin sister who she obviously was very close to in Rosie. And completely outclassed her, as Aine felt her wand fly helplessly out of her hand. She swore under her breath, looking down at her shoes for a minute and pondering before she lifted her head and plastered on a polite smile. "Good match," she managed to say in a voice that sounded like it came from somewhere else. Was that even what you said after a duel? Aine had no idea. She really didn't feel like it was a good match at all and could only be grateful that she wasn't vomiting slugs this time.

Aurora watched proudly as her spell hit and the duel was over. She gave the other girl a wider smile, proud of her achievement and then pushed down her worries about it. She then began moving over towards Aine. "Want to go grab some food? I think Rosie will in the crowd, she can join us?" Aurora offered.

Aine retrieved and pocketed her wand, wincing as she knelt down. That was going to bruise, and in the heat of the moment it had been her only real trick. If she did this again, she'd have to prepare better. If she could even do it. Deep down, she wanted to be the best. Partially to prove that someone like her could be successful in a world she wasn't born into, and partially to prove that maybe she really was worth something. She opened her mouth to speak, but abruptly closed it before an instinctive 'don't pity me' jumped forward. Aine had the market cornered on pitying herself, she didn't need anyone else to. Especially not people like Aurora or Valerius. Her fragile, buried, but still existent pride wouldn't allow it.

She reached out to shake Aurora's hand, feeling like she'd been in a netball game, before stepping back. "Thank you, I..." she rubbed her palm, shaking her head. "Think I need to lie down." She looked away, a maelstrom of emotion clouding her eyes as she fought to keep a polite smile of her face. Sure it was hypocritical of her, but what could you expect?
