Y39 Sorting Ceremony

Evie wasn’t exactly sure if she was ready for whatever was going to come her way at Hogwarts, but she was definitely excited for it. She loved the unpredictability of it and the unknown really interested her. Despite her half-sister attending the school for three years already, Evie still didn’t know anything about it, mostly because she hadn't bothered asking Estella any questions. It felt surreal to finally be old enough to attend, and she felt a sense of freedom as she walked alongside her new yearmates once getting off the train. The girl wanted to figure everything out on her own and wasn’t going to let anyone stop her from doing that. She knew there were plenty of adventures waiting for her beyond the double doors that led into the Great Hall as it was only just the beginning.

The Great Hall had to be one of the biggest rooms in the castle. She felt like she was walking for a very long time down a long path as she made her way between the long tables and to the front where an old hat sat on a stool. She thought that surely this ceremony would have to be boring to the people in the older years, but suddenly the hat started singing a song, and Evie couldn’t help but chuckle a little at how ridiculous that was. It was the first unusual thing to happen, and she was sure there would be many more. The hat would be telling her where to go and which table to sit at, and Evie couldn’t wait until it was her turn to find out where she would be placed.

A few people were called upon first before Evie, and the girl just watched as they nervously approached it. She wasn’t sure why they were so nervous and just wanted their turn to be over with so it could be hers. Eventually, her own name was called and she quickly stepped forward. She knew she could talk to the hat in her head, and so when it was placed on top of her, she made sure to do so. "Yeah so just don’t put me with Estella I guess.” she thought, hoping the hat would somewhat take that into consideration. There was no way she was going to come to Hogwarts just to be annoyed by that spoiled brat during her whole time there.

"I don't remember who Estella is or where she went. But I can tell you where you will go, and that is quite easy....you'll find exactly what you need in....Gryffindor,"

Sky entered the great hall in the middle of the other students. She hadn’t expected to come here. Growing up in Norway it has always been assumed that she would go to Durmstrang. But her dad had got a promotion to a university in New Zealand so after a year of him being here and she anther mum staying in Norway as she finished the year at baneskole. As it had been decided I was pointless moving her for one year of muggle school before he magic. Though other than the names of the schools. She didn’t now much about them or their differences. Which made everything unexpected. She ad had the run down from another student on the train. But even so she felt woefully unprepared for the castle. The great hall was amazing she looked around and was in awe of the ceiling. It was like sitting out under the sky at home. Except the constellations were different.

She listened to the headmistress talk and tell them about the sorting. The sorting hat surprised her she listened in awe as the had described the houses. She had only learned that there were different houses on the train today. She had no idea where she wanted to be, where she belonged. They were all just colours and animals to her. She listened to the description. She didn’t think she was brave, fair play and loyalty. Maybe the yellow table would be hers, then came creativity and air. Air was the element her family was closest aligned to. Or at least her mum was her ‘aunt’ was closer to the earth. she almost missed the last house. Silver and green they were good colour too. And sky meant clouds and sky meant clouds, and clouds were made of water.

She listened as the students were called out. The girl from the train was one of the first to come out. Then came the calling out of names the very excited girl from the train was sorted into Hufflepuff. She wasn’t too far down the list as she had her dads name Eriksen not her mums name Wilde. Before long “Eriksen, Harmony” was called. She rolled her eyes and sighed slightly and moved forward. She didn’t like the name harmony. It was her mums choice to go with her name of melody. But she had always gone by her middle name, Niamh or when she had gotten older and started at school she had picked sky as her name when Niamh had been too hard to write and confused the other students with its weird spelling and pronunciation.

"Hmmmm, an interesting one indeed, some gryffindor bravery, some slytherin cunning, but yes..I believe most of all, you'll find your best place in......Hufflepuff!"

Seamus would never admit to it but he did feel a little nervous about where he might end up. As the train had gotten closer and closer to school it had weighed on his mind, he didn’t want to be apart from his brother but he knew that despite looks they were fairly different people. He was sure that they’d probably end up in different houses and where it had always been them against the world they might just find themselves apart, so of course he was filled with nervousness. He didn’t think he’d manage sleeping in a dorm with like other people and one of them not be his brother. He was concerned in a way that he knew probably wasn’t a very good sign of how he could cope without his brother, but it was just that they had never had to before. Seamus stood close to his brother, a frown on his face though nodded at his comment. He then felt warmed by Hamish’s assurance but also didn’t want him to miss out on making friends just for his sake. ”Wait until like dessert, make sure you maybe get to know others,” he told him in a low tone. He was still holding out hope that they would end up in the same house and they wouldn’t need to worry about all this, but he felt sure that they wouldn’t. His nerves settled as the group reached the front and the hat began to sing. He let himself focus on that, on the song and on the hall itself. He had of course never seen Hogwarts Scotland so he couldn’t really compare them, but Hogwarts New Zealand was cool. It was at least a castle and the spirit of it felt rather magical.

Seamus focused vaguely as names were being read out but he knew they would be a while, lots of other names would go before theirs would and he wasn’t too bothered with this. He watched other students get sorted before them. He tried to guess by how they walked, how they approached the stool, their expressions where they might end up. He wasn’t very accurate but it was a way to pass the time as he grew nervous again and the crowd dwindled. Then his brother’s name was called. Seamus gave an encouraging thumbs up and didn’t have to wait long for him to end up in Ravenclaw..Then Seamus knew, it was impossible he was never going to end up in ravenclaw, sure he liked history enough but he didn’t do learning, he didn’t do classes. He was neither intelligent nor was he creative. He wasn’t a ravenclaw at all. He watched his brother walk towards the cheering table, giving him a smile as he watched the other boy head towards the table and then of course.

“Reid, Seamus,”

Seamus stepped forward, pushing down his nerves and going to the hat. He knew he wouldn’t end up in Ravenclaw, he wasn’t at all one of those, and though he wanted to be with his brother he knew realistically that wasn’t to happen. He sat on the stool, sitting up straight and looking out at the hall, he would be fine on his own, and he’d make sure Hamish was too. His mind was focused on just being sorted.

"You're right. Ravenclaw isn't for you, but that's ok. You have to be in the place that's right for you and that's... Slytherin. "

Leonardo Orr had never been surrounded with more students or further from his grandfather in his life. He had always been close enough or in smaller classes, but there were so many students he felt almost a little overwhelmed with it. Of course he had known there would be so many other students here but he had figured it wouldn’t be that bad, but in fact it was quite. Leo had been waiting for this for a while, the prospect of going to Hogwarts had been keeping him going over the last few months when his grandfather had decided to study the mundane properties of mud and soil. Leonardo knew it would be useful for herbology but he also thought it was very boring. Leonardo’s father had supposed to come see him off at the train but it hadn’t been much of a surprise when he didn’t. He’d missed his birthday too. But it didn’t matter, he was here now, and he was going to start learning and meeting people, he was going to make a friend for sure. It would be impossible that in a school with so many he wouldn’t make at least one friend. He just maybe had to watch the other kids and figure out how they managed it and he’d get it too. In the crowd he spotted that boy from the park but he didn’t go to him or offer even a hint of a smile, he was sure that the both would find more interesting people to spend time with. If anything, his lack of self belief in people wanting to be his friend would be why he’d end up with none.

The crowd stopped and Leo looked to the front as the headmistress and sorting hat got started. He was hanging near the back, standing stock still completely straight posture just listening along with a serious expression. He did feel nervous but he wasn’t going to show it. He did think that the hat was silly in its singing but some students appeared to enjoy it, a lot of students seemed excited by this, the older students all seemed eager. Was watching students get sorted that interesting? With that in mind, and knowing it would be a moment till his name was called. He wasn’t quite sure he got what was interesting but it wasn’t bad. Leo was trying to commit some of these names and faces to his memory, trying his best to know who everyone was, after all he might end up in a house with them and therefore it would be useful to remember who they were. He was so focused on learning that his own name caught him by surprise.

“Orr, Leonardo,”

Straightening out his uniform Leo walked with quick purposeful steps to the stool. He looked out at the hall and felt immediately overwhelmed with the people but he just kept his expression neutral and focused his attention on keeping himself calm as the hat was placed on to his head and the decision was to be made. Leo was sure though, that no matter where he ended up he’d be just fine.

"You've got a fine mind but it's your kindness that's shining through. You belong in ...Hufflepuff!"

It was somewhat overwhelming to be standing in the Great Hall, surrounded by more people than Avie was sure he'd seen in his entire life. It might have been an exaggeration, but to him, in that moment, it felt the closest to reality. There were a lot of people, a lot of kids, more than he'd seen in one place before. He stood slightly to the side once his arm accidentally brushed against someone else's, to put an invisible barrier between himself and the others. They were too close, too loud. Some of them practically buzzed with an energy it seemed they could barely restrain. He watched a girl bounce on her heels, over and over, and had to remind himself to look away and pay attention to the Headmistress as she spoke. It felt an awful long way to walk to reach the stool the hat sat on, past tables of people that seemed to extend infinitely. The ceiling's open sky did little to help the expansive feeling that occupied the room.

Avery dropped his hands to his pockets, his fingers fishing around for the smooth stone he'd kept in one. He turned it over and over in his hand, an action he found comforting in an otherwise uncomfortable situation, and watched as person after person walked up and took a seat beneath the hat. It spoke, in a way that wasn't totally unexpected. The corridors of his home held paintings that did much the same, though they lacked the capability of knowing what he was thinking. It was an impressive piece of magic.

"Lancaster, Avery."

The stone sank back into his pocket, and the boy took a few steps ahead, glad to break away from the dwindling group. He took his seat, and felt the hat settle over his head. There were no thoughts in his head, no comments to be made. He just listened, focused on the voice he expected to hear in his head that for the first time, wouldn't be his own.

"This is interesting...this is a head full of curiousity, full of magic. You've maybe been underestimated so far but I think you'll excel here and excel best in.....Slytherin,"

Katarina took the first day easily, it was her place and she already came in like she owned it. It was only a time matter when she was going to rule it, right? She totally wasn't going to be some hated weirdo, she was better than that. She wanted to be the cool kid and what the cool kids did? Right, they owned the place and controlled it, she needed to get both and also popularity, no matter a good or the bad one. She was like Zeus, everyone knew her bad qualities and respected her because of that.

She lightly smirked at Gola, who was already sorted in, when she heard her name. She immediately put her chin up and came over with a smirk, she didn't care where she was sorted in, she was still going to get what she wanted and she was still going to do it with Gola by her side. There was no other question.

"Well, this is rather easy...though I'm not sure any of them are cool....you'll do best in....Slytherin,"

Tiffaney made her way up to the front of the massive hall. She couldn't believe how big this place was. She was enchanted by the roof and the floating stuff. At the same time, she was scared. She didn't feel like she belonged here. She missed her mum and dad although they weren't always together she always knew she would see them at night and they would eat together. Now it was different. She would be alone. She did see some people she had run into during her explorations of the world she was now in. She was shocked by the hat that spoke.

Tiffaney watched in awe as others went to the hat before her. Then her name was called and it was her turn to walk up to the hat. "Hi, Mr. Hat. You aren't going to hurt me, are you? Are you controlled by someone else? Like they cast a spell on you. How do you know where someone must go? How do you talk?" Tiffaney asked. She remained curious but scared.

"There is nothing be afraid of, I'm just an enchanted hat, all I can do is see into your mind, nothing more. And there's a lot for me to see here, you've a quiet curiousity that would suit you in ravenclaw...but you'll manage best in.....Hufflepuff,"

Lolly was the first child in her family to start school, and she was excited. Her younger sister would be joining her in three years, but for now she was by herself. She had to make friends pronto. She didn't like being alone, and having no one to talk to. Following her schoolmates, Lolly watched as the sorting ceremony began. She couldn't wait to get sorted. When was it going to be her turn? It felt like ages.

"Dannenbring, Lorelai"

Lolly bit her lower lip. No one ever called her Lorelai, she went by Lolly. Everyone called her Lolly. It felt weird hearing her real name being called out. She proceeded up to get sorted, waiting for her destiny.

"Hmmm...this is your destiny indeed, and yours lies quite firmly in....Gryffindor,"

Gola knew that the first day was just the most peaceful, if not to know in which house she would be assigned. She had thought about where she would fit in at home, but she also didn't understand where everything would fit, so she probably decided to leave everything to her hat. Standing next to Katya, watching the students call each other and get to their homes. Before she left Katya, but it didn't take long for her turn to come and her name was named.

She didn't wait long up the stairs and put her hat on, then waited for someone to make her decision. There was such a bit of excitement that internally, of course, wanted to be with Katya, but could not know what the decision of the hat would be left to wait. Whatever the decision, you will have to learn to live with it, because nothing can be changed. What will be, will be.

"Hmm, what will be will be, and there will be plenty of opportunities to spend time with people of different houses. The house for you is.....Ravenclaw,"

Evander was a bit worried about sorting, it was his chance to be like his sister again, it was his chance to show everyone that he was as good as Sofia was. When he passed by the tables, he gave light and unsure smile to Kiara and Nick as they were both at that house table where he wanted to end up. He had to be a Ravenclaw, no other chance that he was better for any other house, right? He stood next to Roxanne, hoping that they two won't get parted away, they both were perfect Ravenclaws. Their older siblings were Ravenclaws too, why would they be something else, right? But Roxie was called out faster than he was so he just stood there awkwardly until it came to his last name. Mikaelson... The school just got rid of one Mikaelson and now they got another one. He almost ran to the sorting hat to get sorted. He didn't ask for anything, anyway, everything was based just on him, not his desires.

"Hmmm, you want a very specific house, and really, after a quick look, you are exactly right, but remember that you also have a great deal of bravery which would've suited you to gryffindor...have fun in.....Ravenclaw,"

First day of school. Nawra hated first days with a fiery passion. That meant introductions, meeting new people and remembering names. She hated all of that. Why did schools make you do that? Was this new school going to be the same like the muggle ones she had been to as a child? Was everyone going to magically know each others names?

Nawra grumbled under her breath when she watched the sorting ceremony get started. Great, now everyone was going to know her name. Her plan was to be invisible, and quietly survive her first year at her new school. Well now she had to scratch that plan, now she could not be invisible anymore. She did not even come up with Plan B.

"Fereshteh, Nawra"

Taking a deep breath, Nawra made her way up to get sorted. Everyone now knew her name. Her Pakistani name probably seemed weird to the other students. Let's just get this over with then. So I can go back to being invisible.

"Perhaps now here in this new school is a chance to not be invisible. You've a little ambition, a little adventurousness, but you'll do best in....Hufflepuff,"

Akara watched her fellow schoolmates get sorted into their houses. She scanned them from top to bottom as their names were called and they made their way up. Akara made a mental note of the ones she thought seemed pleasant enough to her. If she was to stay in this horrible school for an entire year, might as well make some friends. She missed home. Home was so far away now, she was all alone in this foreign land.

When it was her turn, Akara took her seat and waited.

"Hmmm...this is a little tricky, there's definitely something strong pulling you in one direction, but a little desire for adventure too...hmm..but it's not as strong.....Slytherin!"

It was one of the best days of her life. It felt like just hours ago that Belle had discovered that she was to study at a magical school. She never knew it would be possible. She never felt like she was different from her friends back home in Tasmania. But then again growing up in the outskirts, she didn’t have many. She could count them with one hand. She had more friends who were animals, then people.

Leaving Tasmania proved one of the most difficult decisions she had made. With Belle here in New Zealand, her poor grandmother was living alone. Oh how she missed Nana. A little tear trickled down her cheek and Belle quickly wiped it away just in time as she heard her name being called.

"You might miss your family, but I assure you'll make a new one here, and you will achieve that best in.....Hufflepuff,"

No nagging mother, no intruding stepfather and no noisy stepsiblings. This was heaven. Fiorella Matisse smiled to herself, this was she wanted from the very beginning. She was finally away from home. She did not have to see her family again, at least not anytime soon. She grew tired of them and if she was old enough she would have ran away from home. But alas, she was only ten. This was the next best choice, being in school. Even though her family were technically in the same country as her still, she was in a whole different part of the country. The furthest she had ever been away from them. Fiorella missed her now-passed father. He had been from Hufflepuff. She looked up, knowing that he was watching her from on top. She knew he was. She wanted to make him proud. Fiorella walked over when she heard her name. It was time.

"You might have done well in Hufflepuff, but that's not the house for you. Not really. For you, the best house to suit you and your desires is....Slytherin,"

Marcus stood sheepishly in the crowd. There was something electrifying in the air as the student's walked up and were ultimately met with applause. The odd thing was, Marcus wasn't too sure how to react to this "electricity". He'd never been eager for center stage before, and the thought of taking that seat in the front of the great hall was nauseating. At the same time, he couldn't help but think it was immature to be so frightened of what is clearly a welcoming process.

He hadn't settled his internal debate when his name was called. Unsure how to act, he lifted his hand and proceeded to the stool staring at he shoes the entire time. He wasn't about to face the crowd, just his shoe-laces in this moment.

"I'm sure your shoe laces are very interesting, but I'll make this easy and quick so you don't grow too bored too quickly...Ravenclaw,"

Eston had been waiting for this moment for what felt like a lifetime (in reality about three years when his oldest sister was accepted into Hogwarts New Zealand). Suddenly the world was all about her then his other two sisters. He, being the youngest of his siblings, had to wait this turn. It felt like he was being sweep under the rug, a feeling he hated. Eston loved being the center of attention, all eyes on him. He had so much to say, so much to prove. Now he would finally get the chance. He would no longer just be the younger brother going to a muggle school. Soon he would be sorted into a house of his own. It's about time The young boy thought as he entered the Great Hall.

He had been told all about the school from his sisters and even his father (a professor he was making sure not to make eye contact with). It was hard enough being a younger sibling nonetheless a son of a professor. Eston did not want to be associated with anyone like that. He wanted to be his own person. He wanted people to compare his family to him, he was the one going to make a wave here. His eyes glanced around the Great Hall at the different tables. He caught the eyes of Zee, sitting at the Gryffindor table. Soon he hoped to join her, although he wouldn't mind any of the other houses either. It was just that Zee and him always had a good relationship. She understood his determination, his anger. Something that his family often thought he would grow out of. Eston was not so sure.

He followed the first years to the front of the Great Hall. He listened to the Headmistress begin her speech. It seemed basic, nothing too important. nothing that caught his attention. The young boy hummed a song in his head, something he had come up with on the train. It felt like forever for his name to be called. One of the negatives of having a last name with the letter S. But he bided his time. He had waited so long for this, he could wait a little while longer. The song in his head turned back to the Sorting Hat song, as the tune was instantly stuck in his head. I could write a better song He thought as he tried to get the catchy tune out of his mind as he waited. Finally his name was called as the first years around him dwindled down.

"Spencer, Eston."

Eston held his head up high as he walked to the stool in front of him. He tried not to make eye contact with anyone. He did not want the hat to be biased about where he was placed due to his family. He wanted to be sorted for who he was and no other reason. Eston took a seat on the stool, the song from the sorting hat still stuck in his head. He tried to think of another song, but nothing was working. A little bitter, he sat there as the hat was placed on his head. I can't get your song out of my head He thought a little frustrated. Maybe I can help you write a better one in the future He thought again not sure if that Sorting hat would take it the wrong way, not that he cared too much. Eston was sometimes too honest for his own good, and not always in the best way. The young boy sat in the stool with the Sorting Hat on his head, waiting for his chance to shine to begin.

"Once you've learned all the magic you can..maybe you can help me with a song..but let's focus on you for now and where you'll go.....You'd have made a good slytherin, but I think you'll do as well, if not better in....Gryffindor,"

Her thought was full and her violet hair and she fwel here diffirent becouse of her hair. "HI!My name is Twilight Thomsom!" She smiled the hat and she hoped she will be okay right now and she needed a little time take deep breath to came down.

"Hello Twilight Thomsom, you will be okay, this will nice and simple, I'm just going to take a little look inside your mind. Hmmm.....a good amount of hufflepuff, but there is something you want, and hmmm...I see it too....Ravenclaw,"

Roxanne entered the great hall with a confident walk, she had been waiting for this moment for a long time. She was watching the tables looking for her relatives but because of the crowd she couldn't see very well. Roxanne was not used to having so many people in a room which unsettled her a bit ,luckily she was next to Evander so that reassured her particularly.
"Easterling, Roxanne."
When her name was called she turned to him with a smile "See you on the other side cousin". She started walking towards the stage, her heart pounding hard in her chest. She sat down on the chair and when the sorting hat was placed on her head she tried to clear her mind of all thoughts. Roxanne didn't like the fact that someone could read them.

"I only read what I need to, to gleam what you might be like. There's a good amount of kindness here, but above everything a whole lot of creativity and intelligence too..Ravenclaw,"

Charlie was amazed by the beauty of the Great Hall. He never saw a architecture like that before. All the new students rushed to the front of the stage , they all couldn't wait for the turn and Charlie wasn't the exception. It was gonna be a long time before they call his name so he sat in a corner and waited.

"Stark,Charlie"

Charlie woke up from his micro nap before running toward the stage "It's me ! I'm here". He sat rapidly on the chair before feeling the sorting hat be put on his head " Hello ! ".

Oh, hello there. Aren't you polite? Honesty seems to be very important to you. Quite a sense of adventure too, and you're not above a good hearted prank. You'll do well in...Hufflepuff!"

Finn had gone into his most quiet, reserved state. He couldn't tell if he was overwhelmed, excited, or still feeling guilty and angry at himself about this morning's events. He had wanted to say a proper goodbye to his father, as he wouldn't be seeing him for a few months, and wanted to let him know that he would work on the farm with him next summer. But his dad had left early that morning, slamming the front door without so much as a hug. The next few hours had been a whirlwind; his mother seemed distractedly nervous and excited about getting him to the Hogwarts Express on time, and had spent the drive to the station telling wild tales of her time at Hogwarts. Finn wasn't sure he was going to have such a good time, not when he felt like he was ruining his family by being here.

As the first years walked into the Great Hall, thoughts of his parents were momentarily disbanded. He almost uttered a small "Woah" but caught it just in time. This place was like nothing he had seen before; huge vaulted ceilings, a starry sky stretching out over them, four long tables full of teenagers, and a long head table lined with what looked like teachers. Faces turned from every table to stare at the group as they made the long walk up to the front of the hall. Finn stared ahead, trying not to make eye contact with any of them. Meeting a whole bunch of new people at once had never been his strong point, and he was feeling vaguely sick. At least his mother had told him what to expect from the Sorting ceremony. They came to a halt in a tight group, the hall eventually went silent and the headmistress spoke. Finn tried to concentrate on what she was saying but the nervous fidgeting of the other first years around him, and whispers of the students at the tables made it difficult.

About half the group around him had their names called, went up to the stool and were sorted into the four houses. Finn watched closely and by the time “Millar, Finn” was called he had a pretty good idea of what to do. He walked slowly up to the seat, avoiding the gazes of students and teachers around him and sat down. The hat fell just below his eyes and he waited for it to speak.

"You might make a good Hufflepuff but your curiosity, sense of adventure, and fiery spirit mean you're meant for...Gryffindor!"

Lina's eyes scanned the enchanted ceiling, where the inside looked like the night skies. Grey night clouds blended in the skyglow. Where it’s not dark due to the stars beaming miles, miles away or something like that. Lina read it somewhere, she can’t remember where but she has and well, it felt like she’s been here before. Odd, that’s what a normal person would feel. However, Lina embraced it. Like stepping into her past life self, the deja vu made her comfortable to stroll down the middle of the hall like it was a normal day for her. While another firstie would be a nervous mess, the familiarity that Lina felt made it easy for to come across as if nothing bothered her. “And they say I’m strange, what even,” Lina rolled her eyes, mumbling to no one in particular. “This feels like home,” she added, and no it wasn’t because her mum or the rest of her dad’s family went to this school. Lina dismissed that quickly, she’s been here before. Many, many years ago she was here before. Not as herself, no, no she wasn’t immortal. She was here before as someone else. Lina will prove it somehow...but for now….

“Holland, Thalina!,” Lina shot a hand up, waving from the crowd of firsties.

“Here I am, ready to rock and roll!”

"You have a creative side to you that seems to know no bounds. No better place to nurture that than...Ravenclaw!"

Leah knew what she was there for but she was easily distracted from the Sorting Hat. She was looking around the Hall, especially looking at the ceiling and at some points she was hiding behind some of the other unsortees to put some candy in her mouth. However, she was getting more and more impatient with so many kids sorting, why couldn't they get sorted faster so she didn't have to wait for her turn? But she finally got called and without thinking twice, she shot towards the Hat, impatiently turning in her chair to finally hear in which house she was going to end up at.

"You're a quick thinker, pretty curious too. Better be...Ravenclaw!"

Tagai examined the bright room with squinted eyes. Floating candles. Red, green, yellow, and blue flags. She loathed the sporadic cheering and the weight of the wand in her pocket. It was strange. Back home, everyone knew why her hair was a vibrant, bright purple. She was not expecting to stick out like a sunflower with its back turned away from the sun. Tagai wrung her hands anxiously. She would be the first in her family to get a formal education. Her family's expectations were high, but Tagai was going to make this work for her.

"Seward, Tagai."

Tagai slumped on the stool. Apparently, the old hat spoke, and a little encouragement would do right about now.
