Leading the competitors of the first round to the duelling platform, Katherine gestured for each of them to take up a position at either end, while she herself stepped up to a podium overlooking them. With a tap of her wand in the air, the headmistress pointed the tip at her throat, speaking out in a magically-amplified voice. "Welcome, competitors, to the first round of duelling. As always, the victor of this round will move on to compete in the next, and is brought one step closer to becoming one of this year's duelling champions. Wands at the ready, and prepare yourselves for the duel ahead." Katherine called, giving the students an opportunity to take on a comfortable stance. "Now, bow and commence."

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Brooke was eager for the tournament to start; this was her last year to potentially prove to Sydney (and herself), that she was a good duellist. Brooke had been working hard and, she couldn't help but think with a smile, she had noticed that Ivy seemed more distracted this year than previous. Hopefully that would be to her advantage. Brooke bowed to her friend but didn't waste any time figuring off a jelly-fingers jinx.

Ivy wished she hadn't been paired with Brooke for the first duel. Brooke was good and Ivy wanted to get through to the next round. She had never done as well in duelling as she had wanted. And last year, she had lost to Brooke. She bowed, then blocked Brooke's spell. She cast one of her own. "Rictusempra!"

"Protego! Cute spell," Brooke called to Ivy as she blocked her friend's first spell, giving Ivy a sweet smile as the spell was deflected. She was tempted to return the favour with something like a boil or antler jinx, but Brooke wanted win, not waste time. "Stupefy!"

Brooke laughed at Ivy's response, getting into the swing of the duel as she blocked her spell again. "Don't tell me you're feeling competitive, Ivy," she asked, deciding to borrow one of Sydney's favourites for her next spell. "Everte Statum!"

Brooke just smiled at Ivy, throwing up another shield though she grimaced as the impact of Ivy's stunning spell caused her to flinch. "You sure you want me at 100%? I wouldn't want to hurt you," she said sweetly, deciding to hit Ivy with a conjunctivitis curse.

Brooke laughed back at Ivy's confidence. She knew Ivy was a clever witch, but she was certain she was a better duelist, what with Ivy's mind having been elsewhere lately, but it would definitely make things more satisfying to remind her friend of that. Block Ivy's spell again, Brooke simply shot another stunning spell back her, aiming to show off simply by winning.
