Leading the competitors of the first round to the duelling platform, Katherine gestured for each of them to take up a position at either end, while she herself stepped up to a podium overlooking them. With a tap of her wand in the air, the headmistress pointed the tip at her throat, speaking out in a magically-amplified voice. "Welcome, competitors, to the first round of duelling. As always, the victor of this round will move on to compete in the next, and is brought one step closer to becoming one of this year's duelling champions. Wands at the ready, and prepare yourselves for the duel ahead." Katherine called, giving the students an opportunity to take on a comfortable stance. "Now, bow and commence."
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Signing up for the dueling tournament had been a no-brainer. It was a chance to show off her magical skills and make a name for herself. But as soon as she saw the round one pairings, Celia was filled with doubt. It wasn't her opponent that was the issue — she was sure she could crush Louis — but her proctor. The last time she'd seen Professor Alicastell this close up had been that terrible meeting in her office last year, and Celia had been hoping to keep it that way. What was the headmistress even doing proctoring a second year duel?

Celia stepped onto the platform, trying to ignore the fact that the headmistress was literally looming over them. Could this really be a coincidence? Did the school not trust her? Her mouth felt dry, and she bowed stiffly. All the nervous excitement from before the tournament had left her, and she just felt dread. Celia raised her wand. "Everte statum!" She wanted this duel over with as quickly as possible.

Louis had been excited to finally sign up for the duelling tournament. Last year he had watched the duels and he was happy he was finally an official part of it. His first opponent was Celia, and Louis grinned at her before bowing briefly. He figured he could beat her pretty easily. She looked pretty nervous. "Protego." He cast, putting up a shield. Then he cast his next spell. "Expelliarmus!"

Celia was starting to think she could feel Professor Alicastell's stare, like she was trapped under a giant microscope. The sight of her spell glancing off Louis' shield proved to be a decent distraction, however, and she swiftly cast her own shield charm. Though she hadn't really expected to knock him out in one shot, that hadn't stopped her from hoping that would happen. But it did make her feel better that he'd chosen such an elementary spell for his opening attack. "Petrificus Totalus!"

Louis blocked Celia's spell and sent back a new spell in return. Something that could be a bit more fun. "Tarantallegra!" He cast.

Celia was annoyed to see Louis block her spell once again, and she summoned another shield, her frown deepening when she realized which jinx he'd chosen. She refused to be hit with such a humiliating spell in front of the entire school. That would be even worse than messing up on the Quidditch pitch. With a glare, she sent back a jelly-legs jinx. If anyone was going to flail across the platform, it was going to be him.

Louis laughed at the way Celia glared at him. He managed to block the spell again, though he was only barely in time. Then he cast his next spell. "Rictusempra!"

As far as Celia could tell, there was nothing funny happening on the platform or off it, which meant Louis was laughing at her. And if there was one thing she did not enjoy, it was being laughed at. Celia quickly cast another shield, blocking his jinx, before pointing her wand at the space above his head. Hopefully all those extra lessons with Professor Corrins were about to pay off. "Serpensortia!"

Louis jumped a bit in surprise at the spell Celia used next. A huge snake appeared on the stage, and Louis knew he wanted it to get away from him. He did the first thing he could think of and used the banishing charm to blast it back, aiming to blast it off the platform. He then cast a spell at Celia as well, trying for a simple disarming spell as it was the only thing he could think of.

Celia couldn't hide her gleeful smile when Louis jumped at the sight of the giant snake. She didn't recognize the snake species and had no way to tell if it was venomous, but at least it looked impressive. It was definitely a step up from the harmless thing she'd conjured during practice that Professor Corrins had called cute. Unfortunately, Louis pushed the snake off the platform before it could do any damage. Without thinking, Celia quickly sidestepped his attack and pointed her wand at the snake, which was writhing on the ground next to the platform. "Wingardium leviosa." She moved the creature back over to Louis before releasing the charm, hoping it'd fall on top of him.

Katherine had been watching the duel from her podium, keeping a somewhat closer eye on Celia than she perhaps might have with most competitors. The duel had gone smoothly for a time, though as a snake was tossed closer to the audience, the headmistress had been prepared to remove it from the space before it could be given the chance to slither into the audience. There'd been no time, as it was soon levitated back up to the platform. Katherine pursed her lips, and snapped her wand toward the serpent, vanishing it before it could land on Louis. "Ms Vuong." Katherine said sharply. "Competitors are not permitted to use magic on anything outside of the duelling platform. You are disqualified from this round. Mr Alcott is the victor."

One second, the snake was falling. And then it was not. Before Celia could comprehend what was happening, she heard a voice that made her blood run cold. Her head snapped up and she locked eyes with Professor Alicastell. For a few minutes, Celia had been so intent on winning the duel that she'd completely forgotten that the headmistress was there. But then Alicastell had to reassert her presence in the worst way possible.

Celia gaped at the woman as she tried to understand the words coming out of her mouth. Disqualified? Her fear of the headmistress vanished, replaced by anger. "But I conjured the snake." She could understand the intent of the rule, presumably to prevent duelers from using outside objects as extra weapons. But that wasn't what she had done. It struck her as extremely unfair that the snake had been considered fair play one second but not the next.

What could she do? Maybe she could complain to the SDA leaders? But even as Celia contemplated this possibility, she realized it would be no use. There was no one more powerful than the headmistress. This whole duel had been rigged from the start since Professor Alicastell was never going to give her a fair shot. She gave Louis a bitter smile. "Enjoy your technical win." Trying to keep her head up, Celia turned and stalked away, intent on getting out before she did something stupid, like cry. She'd made one mistake in her life, and it seemed the universe would never forgive her for it.

Sydney liked watching the lower year matches, if only to see if there were any younger students in the SDA who were clever enough to do more than just throw stunning charms at each other. She'd caught the tail end of this duel, just in time to watch Professor Alicastell weilding her own special brand of justice on Celia Vuong and ending the match. Sydney frowned, recognizing the look on Celia's face and narrowing her eyes at the Headmistress. Making her mind up, Sydney left the duelling chamber quickly, hoping Celia hadn't gone far yet.
