Leading the competitors of the first round to the duelling platform, Katherine gestured for each of them to take up a position at either end, while she herself stepped up to a podium overlooking them. With a tap of her wand in the air, the headmistress pointed the tip at her throat, speaking out in a magically-amplified voice. "Welcome, competitors, to the first round of duelling. As always, the victor of this round will move on to compete in the next, and is brought one step closer to becoming one of this year's duelling champions. Wands at the ready, and prepare yourselves for the duel ahead." Katherine called, giving the students an opportunity to take on a comfortable stance. "Now, bow and commence."
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

@Indira Khatri vs @Salem Lee

Salem didn't think she was a very good duelist. But Tyler was, and maybe if she was lucky some of his skill had rubbed off on her. Family stuff was like that, wasn't it? She did wish she didn't have to go up against Indi first. Not just because she was her friend, but also because Salem figured Indi was probably pretty scary at the other end of a wand. Not wanting to find out first hand how scary, Salem finished her bow and immediately shot off a disarming charm at Indi. Maybe she'd get lucky and end it quick.

Indi had been waiting for her chance to duel ever since she learned about them. She still thought it was unfair she had to wait a whole year but ready to make the best of it now. She frowned slightly when she saw she was up against Salem. She actually liked the other girl and it wouldn't be quite as satisfying to beat her instead of someone she didn't like. Indi decided to wait and let Salem act first as a test and blocked her first spell easily. "Locomotor Mortis!" she cast next.

Salem hadn't really thought about what to do after she'd fired off her first spell, belatedly raising her wand when Indi sent a curse back her way and having to just dodge to the side instead. "Uh. Um. Stupefy!"

Indi grinned as Salem seemed to be caught off guard. Hopefully this might be a quick duel. She was able to block her next spell with a shield charm and quickly cast the jelly-legs jinx, hoping to get her opponent off balance before disarming them. At least that was her plan.

Salem did manage a shield this time, but her face fell when it wasn't strong enough to stop Indi's jinx, feeling her legs tremble before collapsing under her. Salem spent a moment trying to get back to her feet to no success before giving up and trying to just fire her own jelly-legs jinx back at Indi from the floor.

Indi tired to hid her laugh as Salem flopped to the floor when the jinx hit her. She was almost too distracted to block as Salem sent the same jinx back at her. But she threw a shield charm up just in time. "Expelliarmus!" she cast, hoping to catch the other girl in a vulnerable spot now that she was on the floor.

Tyler had been a bit surprised to see Salem sign up for duels, it had never seemed like her thing. He hoped she wouldn't embarrass him. He watched the duel quietly, not feeling very hopeful. Salem's opponent seemed a lot more competent than her, though he had to admit he admired how Salem kept going even after falling down.

Salem spent a minute too long trying to figure out how she could cast a shield spell from the ground. She'd been trying to work out what was the best angle so she didn't get hit when Indi was already casting her next spell and Salem's wand was launched from her hand, hitting the ground with a clatter. "Aww," Salem whined, propping herself up on her elbows to look at her wand in disappointment.

"Yes!" Indi exclaimed as her spell succeeded to disarm Salem, her excitement getting the better of her as she raised her hand in victory. "Sorry." she said a little sheepishly as the excitement of the moment passed. She used the counter jinx and held out her hand to help the Gryffindor girl up. "You did...alright. Maybe you'll have better luck next time." she added playfully with a grin.
