Ryder lead the two contestants out onto the stage and appointed them to the north and south points of the stage. After explaining the rules he walked off the stage and watched.

All right, make sure that you use the spell list for guidance. No board rule breaking is acceptable. Have fun! I have a copy of the code that you should use with every post. Remember, when you are knocked out, unable to shoot anymore spells, you lost. And if you run out of points, you lose.


The duel begins now. If someone doesn't post after 24 hours, they are disqualified.

Vader had tossed up whether to compete or not in the tournament. He hadn't been sure he wanted to learn to duel, but the recent experiences with the older girl and the roses had made him more keen to figure out if he liked it. Figured out how to use his magic for something where he could in the future protect himself. He didn't like the idea of fighting Alice but he didn't mean anything by it. he gave a little smile and bowed as they were meant to. He mouthed a small sorry before raising his wand a little nervously and saying, "Rictusempra" closing his eyes a little as the light shot out of the wand.

Alice had been a bit unsure about signing up for this tournament, but it had seemed pretty exciting last year. She just hoped it would all be friendly fun, and nothing really bad happened. Her opponent was the only other person in their year to sign up, so this match would immediately determine the winner. Alice gave her friend a bright smile."Good luck!" She called before the duel began. Vader went first, and Alice blocked it with a shield charm. Then it was her turn. "Expelliarmus!"

Vader knew that they were the only two to sign up and it made things more difficult. this was all or nothing. The gryffindor watched, opening his eyes as she cast a protective spell around her and stopped his spell dead. The boy watched as she cast a spell back and just dodged to get out of its way. He thought about defence against the dark arts class and how they were about jinxes and curses. He threw back a trip jinx at her, his eyes remaining open this time as the spell shot out

Alice felt a little strange pointing her and at her friend, and a part of her was glad he dodged out of the way. She dodged his spell as well, then turned to him and tried to steel herself. "Uh." She swallowed. "Stupefy!" She hoped that he wouldn't hurt himself by falling if it hit him.

Vader blocked her spell just in time, conjuring up a weak but sufficient shield charm against her spell. His mind was still upon the spells they'd be considering in defence against the dark arts and cast a knee reversing hex. He didn't feel particularly good at it, causing people pain wasn't what he wanted to do, but this was safe, right?

Alice was honestly a bit relieved this spell didn't hit either. She blocked Vader's next hex with a shield charm, getting the hang of them more and more. Then she decided to try a spell she hadn't tried yet. "Locomotor Mortis!" She called, firing the spell his way.

Vader blocked her spell, with a much better shield than the day before, he took a moment to decide what spell to fire next. "Tarantallegra," the boy cast, waiting the spell as it shot from his wand, this spell made the person dance or something, he was sure it was enough to maybe help him win, but largely harmless.

Alice grinned encouragingly as Vader managed to do a better shield this time. They were both learning, and that was really what was important. She was thinking of what spell to cast next, and actually forgot to block Vader's. She yelped as it hit her, but then quickly laughed as her legs started to dance in a weird way. She was moved along with them for a moment as they had a mind of their own, then she remembered the counter spell. "Finite!" She said, pointing her wand at herself. Thankfully, her legs stopped dancing. "Uh, Rictusempra!" She then cast at Vader, hoping to get a hit on him as well.

Vader was very concerned when the spell he cast actually hit Alice and he took a few steps towards her to help, nearly opting to drop his wand on the ground to go help her, but she managed to make it stop before it got to that. Instead he focused on blocking her spell with a very weak protego, barely managing to get it up in time as his concern for Alice had still be on the forefront of his mind. "Stupefy," he cast.

Alice was a little unsteady on her legs after the dancing spell, but managed to block Vader's stunning spell thankfully. She took a deep breath, then tried her best to focus. She cast the first spell that came to mind. It was one she had already tried, but there was only a limited choice for second years. "Expelliarmus!"

Vader was glad when it seemed that Alice had recovered enough, and was able to block his spell easily. vader's shield against Alice's spell remained a bit weak, just managing to protect him. He thought for a moment then fired back with "Petrificus Totalus"

Alice was finding that she really enjoyed dueling. She had enjoyed casting spells in Charms and Defence Against the Dark Arts before, but this was even better. The quick thinking, the thrill of not knowing what was coming. She could understand why both Diana and Phoebe enjoyed it so much. She blocked Vader's spell. "Rictusempra!" She then called.

Vader was in time to get up a shield, he made an attempt but the shield didn't produce and instead he was hit hard with the spell. Immediately he began laughing, he couldn't stop it. he didn't feel like he should be laughing, and he couldn't stop, he panicked a little as he cast the counter to it. he bent over slightly drawing in long breaths. Sucking in as much air as he could before finally standing back up and sent back a weak trip jinx.

Alice's blue eyes widened when Vader was actually hit with her spell. She stepped closer automatically as she noticed he couldn't stop laughing. The spell had seemed harmless enough when she cast it, but now that she saw the results she realized it could be kind of scary too. But Vader managed to use the counter spell, and as Alice was about to ask if he was okay, he sent a spell to her. She moved her wand too late to put up the shield in time and as the trip jinx it her, she stumbled and fell to her knees on the platform. "Ouch." She muttered, then quickly cast a spell at Vader again from the floor. "Uh, Expelliarmus!" She cast, as she didn't want to cause any more harm to Vader, even if it was just the annoyance of laughing uncontrollably.

Vader didn't expect his spell to hit her, and he didn't expect the little quiet ouch too, only heard because they'd both moved a little closer. He couldn't do this. He had wanted to try some spells and learn to fight, but he'd hurt Alice. He'd hit her with the two spells, he didn't want to keep fighting her. He felt awful, truly awful. This was a duel and it was all allowed but she maybe didn't want to be his friend after this. He wanted to keep going, prove himself a little. Learn and be able to fight. So he barely managed to get a shield up in time. It was weak, and his face betrayed some of the worries he was having. But he should try to see this through. So he sent back, "Expelliarmus," the only spell he could think of that would cause her no harm, if it hit her.

Alice scrambled to her feet and smiled at Vader reassuringly. She wasn't hurt that much, she would at most get a bruise on her knee. She could tell that Vader seemed worried about her, so she tried to look as okay as possible so he wouldn't feel so bad. "That's good!" She called, blocking his disarming spell. She liked the idea of using disarming spells, they were harmless and wouldn't hurt them in any way. "Expelliarmus!" She cast back, grinning at him to show that this was okay. It wasn't like they knew a ton of spells anyway in their second year.

Vader shook his head at her encouragement. He didn't deserve that. He needed this to end soon, he didn't know if he could keep going. Vader managed to block her spell and he shot back with "Stupefy," he knew it stunned, it probably wasn't a good spell if he wanted to avoid hurting her, but he wasn't sure he would be allowed to just keep casting expelliarmus. Even if they only knew a limited amount of spells.

Alice was sad to see her words did nothing to improve Vader's mood, and frowned a little as Vader's next spell was a stunning spell. She used the protection charm to block it again. She had thought they were getting somewhere with the disarming charms, but it seemed like Vader hadn't been on her wavelength after all. Alice squared her shoulders. "Expelliarmus!" She cast stubbornly, unwilling to give up on her strategy yet. It was a way to duel and possibly win without hurting or humiliating Vader, and that was what she wanted. If i was against the rules she would hear about it, but she would also tell whoever was in charge that it was then a stupid rule.

It seemed that Alice was sticking to the spell that she'd been doing. The one spell, to him it made sense, it was the least likely to injure her, and least likely to end with her falling because of it and getting hurt. She was sticking to it. Would she be mad that he hadn't? He hadn't been sure they were allowed to keep using one spell. Would she be mad that he'd picked another spell that she could get hurt because of? would Alice hate him even more now? In all of his concentration, the spell hit and the wand flew out of his hand, but it was all the encouragement that Vader needed to just rush out of the room. Leaving the important wand behind.

Alice felt some relief when the duel was over, but not really a sense of victory. Vader had seemed to grow more and more upset as the duel went on, and she wanted to make sure he was okay. Had she hurt him with one of her spells? She wasn't sure, but she wished to talk to him so she could know. She stepped forward, but faltered as Vader turned and ran away. He left his wand behind, which Alice picked up uncertainly. Her stomach dropped, had she messed up? She should bring Vader his wand, but didn't know where he had gone off to. After a few moments, she headed out as well, hoping to catch him in time.
