Transfiguration 1:5

Lesson Five: Learning Flammeus Tailora (match into a needle)
Leif was stood in front of his class, leaning against his desk as he usually did while he waited for his students to arrive. Beside him sat a large glass jar. One that normally wasn't present in his classes but would be necessary for today's lesson.

"Good morning! I know we're all excited to be working with our wands once more so I won't be doing much talking today. Let's get right to it." He started, waving his wand at the jard beside him. It floated up off his desk and into his outstretched hand. "Alright. In this jar are matches. I would like each of you to walk up to me and carefully take a match. Single file now, and don't push anyone. No trying to light them, either, or you'll have to attend your next lesson completely soaked." He told them with a wink, yet his voice was stern enough for his students to realize he was being serious.

Once everyone had a match, Professor Odegard put the jar back down and turned to the students, his own match in hand to use as a demonstration. "Today we are going to turn matches into needles. Of course we will be using the 'three tap' motion with our wand as usual. The incantation for this is 'Flammeus Tailora'." He tapped his wand in the palm of his hand three times and said "Flammeus Tailora". In the blink of an eye the match's wood became sleek metal, and the phosphorous sulfide changed into the needle's eye, perfect for threading. "It is that simple. Well, as always, I will be walking around the room as you work. If you need something, raise your hand. At the end of the class, I need you to turn your needles back in. I'll be counting them. Begin!"

Note: "Finite" is a counter-spell, not Untransfiguration, and shouldn't be used to reverse any transfigurations.

Roleplay turning your match into a needle for full marks.

Winnie was having a good semester she though, it had been interesting so far, and she felt optimistic that the work she was putting in was going to result in her really managing to do well int he exams, which was all she really wanted. She just wanted to do well in her exams. The slytherin was getting ehrself together for the day, she was waking up early to finish homework and revise a little before she headed to class. It was a good time to study, usually quiet enough. The slytherin gathered up her things and then headed out of the dorm room and to class.

Winnie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She glanced at the professor as the man got started on what this lesson was about. She took her wand, and was very glad that they would be doing another spell. She took a few notes on the spell they were learning and then was glad when the professor was still quick to hand the lesson over to them. Winnie took her want and the match. She imagined the latter turning into a needle, could see it in her mind’s eye, and then she cast. ”Flammeus Tailora,” it took a few tries but she was able to eventually get it. She had the professor change it back and did the spell over, managing more quickly a second time around, she practiced the spell over and over until the lesson was wrapped up and she was able to leave the room.

She couldn't believe the semester was almost over and they would be heading into the review week. She still have some time of course, but that didn't mean she didn't lay awake at night thinking about everything she'd messed up this year, and the things she had learned. Some of it was great and she couldn't wait to get back home to tell her mother about it all - other things weren't so great, and she found herself wondering if those not so great things went into the pot of things her mum disliked about magic. Sometimes she couldn't be sure what aspects her mum enjoyed and what parts she didn't. The other part of course being that she was going to lose access to her brother when he graduated and she had a lot of mixed feelings about that. She was trying to process it but she wasn't sure how she felt about it yet. She already saw her brother less than she would like and this year had been great because she'd seen him almost daily at breakfast and after his games. When he graduated that would stop. She didn't know how she felt about that.

She gripped her matchstick tightly, her eyes fixed on it as she replayed the professor's instruction in her head. She couldn't help the excitement buzzing up in her at the thought of trying something new, especially something so precise like this. She wasn't usually a precise magic kind of girl, always one to move for something big and exuberant, but this was smaller, and would take more concentration, she thought. She took a steadying breath, tapping the match three time, and then, "Flammeus Tailora," just like the professor had shown them. Nothing happened the first time, but she quickly shook off the frustration and tried again. This time her focus paid off and she watched the wood being to gleam and sharpen, the head narrowing into a small, rounded eye. She beamed, satisfied with her nearly perfect needle. She held it up proudly before setting it down to wait for the professor's inspection.

Kanako couldn't believe they were actually do a spell, even if the spell itself seemed reductive and somewhat pointless. Kanako got a match from the professor and took her seat again. How hard could this be? She had slight butterflies but she'd never admit that to anyone. Kanako made the note of the three taps and the words to say and sat at her desk, determined to succeed. "Flammeus Tailora," she said, surprised when nothing actually happened. She frowned. She'd tapped it three times, maybe it was her wand? She looked over to see how others were going and tried again. It sort of worked this time, but not completely, the transfiguration not entirely successful. Kanako gave a irritated sigh and tried once more. It took her nearly the whole lesson but eventually she had a needle. She was full of frustration but she'd managed it.

Now that they had begun to use magic in Transfiguration, Sayuri was starting to look forward to the class more than she had before. While transforming a match to a needle was hardly interesting, it did sound frankly a little more challenging. Something as tiny as a needle required finer details. She quickly took a match from the jar, examining it closely as she walked back to her seat. She supposed she didn't need to change the length. With this length though, a needle would definitely be thinner. She wanted it to be smooth, smoother than her attempt with the spoon previously. Sharp and pointy, not enough to quickly bleed, but enough to sting if one was careless enough. Steel the color of silver. She stared intently at the match, taking into account her vision of the needle. Three taps with her wand and "Flammeus Tailora". For a second, nothing happened, but she kept her mind on that picture of the needle. The match began to shimmer, the wooden body slowly turning into metal. The flammeable end growing thinner and thinner until the tip was a sharp point. She picked up the needle and was quite satisfied with it for a first attempt. No matter, the professor had more matches she could practice on.

William was looking forward to doing something practical in Transfiguration, there had been a lot of theory in the early lessons and he was itching to actually practice some magic. A jar of matches sat on Professor Odegard’s desk and that gave William an idea of what they would be doing and what they would be working with. After the professor told them what they would be doing, William made his way up to the desk and took a match back to his own desk and listened to the rest of the professor’s instructions, particularly the incantation for the spell.

Once William had repeated the incantation several times in his head, and a couple times out loud, and then tried it on the match in front of him. “Flammeus Tailora,” Nothing happened the first time, but on his second attempt his match slowly turned into a silvery needle. William was pretty happy with himself and sat back in his chair to take a moment to pat himself on the back before he took another match and continued to practice until the end of the lesson. Once it was over he packed everything up and made his way out of the classroom.

The semester was going by in a flash now and Sybil felt like she was already behind on her exam prep. She wanted to be ready which meant she needed to start early. So she was a little stressed as she took her seat for the day’s lesson. So she was glad when she learned they would be practicing spell work again. She listened attentively as the professor went over the steps and the incantation. When it was their turn to practice Sybil took the match and placed it delicately in front of her. For some reason this was harder than the other spells she had learned. Maybe her stress was blocking her. Finally the match thinned out and turned into a mostly straight needle. There was a slight curve along the middle but it was the best she could do for now. She’d just have to practice more before the exam.

There wasn’t much of an introduction from Professor Odegard as he announced they would once again be working with their wands. She joined the single file line up to the professor’s desk to grab a match that they would be attempting to transfigure into a needle. In theory it was reasonably simple, both items were similar sizes and looked quite similar. Once Esme had her match she returned to her desk and watched Professor Odegard for the rest of the demonstration. They would be using the three tap method as usual and the incantation was Flammeus Tailora. Once they had been given their instructions Esme set off trying to transfigure her match. It took a couple of attempts before her saying the incantation actually worked and the match on her desk turned into a metallic needle. Once the lesson was over Esme showed Professor Odegard her needle then left the classroom.
