Transfiguration 1:3

Lesson Three: Transfiguration Restrictions and Laws
Leif waited comfortably leaning against his desk as he waited for the first years to file in for yet another lesson. He had waited outside for them the previous two lessons, feeling they might be ready for things to be switched up now that they were hopefully a little more used to life at Hogwarts. "Good morning! Happy to see you all back." He greeted as they all took their seats. "Wands won't be required today, sorry, but we have some more theory to get through before moving on to the exciting stuff." There were a few groans and other disappointed sounds, but the professor shot them a warning glance. He wanted to get to spellcasting as much as they did.

"We'll try get through this quickly. Your first year is all about introductions and general familiarization, which I'm sure you've found to be the case in other subjects too. While you won't be performing most types of Transfiguration during this year, with the sole focus being Inanimate to Inanimate, you will need to know about what you'll be learning in future to help you prepare for it. Next year you'll be going into Inanimate to Animate, and so on through the list we covered earlier in the year." Leif gestured toward the board with his wand as he spoke, causing the chalk to come to life, as usual, and write up the list again for those who needed a refresher. He could only imagine having to write everything himself during these lessons. Perhaps magic made them all a little lazy at times.

"These are your building blocks. Think of Inanimate to Inanimate transfiguration as the foundation for which the others build upon. That being said, Animate to Animate transfiguration will provide the backbone for nearly every advanced transfiguration spell that you will learn in future years. You must capable of transfiguring animals in general before you can hope to learn to switch, vanish, or conjure them, or even put your hands on human transfiguration." Leif paused to allow the few stragglers to keep up with their note-taking before he continued on once it looked like they were all ready. "Of course, human transfiguration, as we discussed during lesson one, includes the animagus transformation. An animagus is a wizard or witch who can transform into a specific animal at will, though they are rare. This school however, much like Uagadou, is quite known for the number of animagi it has trained. Even some of the professors who have taught here are animagi. Naturally, with this power comes responsibility, and the Ministry has regulations in place to avoid them causing havoc, if they wanted to. Here is a list of branches of magic, particularly transfigurative such an animagi and apparition, which have strict laws." He stopped once more and flicked his wand towards the blackboard. The chalk floated away from the list it had already written up and began working on another.

Animagi: Requires a license and is heavily regulated. The Ministry has a list of registered animagi, for obvious reasons. Any animagi found to not be on the list faces time in Azkaban prison.

Apparition: A license is required to apparate legally. You will learn to apparate in year six, and not a moment before.

Invisibility: The Ministry has tried time and again to keep restrictions on the use of invisibility cloaks and spells. Naturally this is the hardest for them to detect, but be aware restrictions do exist and should be researched thoroughly.

Muggles: The Department of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office, also known as Creation of Dangerous Objects Department, attempts to minimize the number of harmful objects created from muggle items. Sometimes they are successful, sometimes not.

Time Travel: This branch is heavily restricted, and for obvious reasons. Very few people ever receive permission to travel back in time.

"That's all the time we have for today. Please make sure you have these lists written down, it'll make things much easier! See you all next week."

Roleplay the lesson for full marks

The game of tug-of-war was supposed to be just a game, but from what Tori had seen, there was something else going on. Eury had said she wanted to join the boys and honestly, Tori kind of wanted to echo her sentiment. Not that she was giving up on the girls, but... since the introduction back in the first weeks of the school year, she hasn't even spoken to her assigned sister and she's spent more time with Veronica than Rose has. She's not even completely sure Rose knew who Veronica was - does that make sense to anyone? Tori didn't want to suggest that maybe there are too many girls all in the same room together, but... well the management could maybe use some sprucing up. She didn't want to say anything against the leader but there seemed to be a theme she was not exactly happy with - not that she had any say in the matter at all.

She sighed along with the rest of her classmates when the professor mentioned it would be another theory lesson. It's become a habit recently that she didn't enjoy and if they would just let them practice things then maybe they'd all be a lot better at this. It's getting late in the year now, Tori felt like she hadn't learnt anything - maybe that was more a comment on her than on the education she'd received so far. The interesting thing of course was how complicated it all was and yet somehow also very simple. It was like her mum had said once, everyone and everything can change, but she probably hadn't been talking about transfiguration at the time. Although, maybe she had? Animgi was a cool branch to think about though, so she took as many notes on that as she could whilst she listened to the lecture, trying to maintain some semblance of her own vision for the rest of the class, not that she specifically disliked it. As she copied down the final list of heavily restricted magic types, she felt sort of like she'd achieved something, even though all she had done was realised she didn't actually know anything about magic at all - but perhaps that was just the first step in her education. She was sure Eoghan would agree. Years of study of course, but that was the end goal. Honesty and understanding. When the class ended, she quickly packed up her things and headed out to find Rory - after all, he was about to graduate in a couple of weeks and then she'd never see him.

Lumos hurried into the classroom, taking his seat next to his friend as the professor began. He was annoyed they wouldn't be using their wands, but he supposed he expected that too. Maybe next week. Transfiguration seemed like one of those classes you really had to pay attention to and know what you were doing to make sure you didn't end up doing something that would cause problems later. The Professor explained the foundations of transfiguration and he wrote some of it down, but he'd never really been a note-taker so he didn't bother too much with it. The categories kind of made sense, though he wasn't sure why time would have anything to do with transfiguration? That felt more like a charms thing, but then what would he know, he doesn't know anything about either of them. He'd done charms already maybe but that wasn't the point. It was kind of terrifying to think that someone could just jump about in time, though maybe that wasn't quite true. He'd seem some movies on time travel before, but... none of them really answered his burning questions about it. Maybe they never would. But with magic involved? Who knew. He could kind of understand muggles coming up in the class, but he didn't understand how apparition was transfiguration? How was time travel transfiguration? He hoped they would cover that in the rest of the course because now he needed to know. Once the class wrapped up, he quickly left the class room because he had too many questions and he didn't want to ask them yet - lest someone mistake him for a good student.

Winnie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze moved towards the professor as the man got started. She was a little disappointed that they wouldn’t need their wands, she had wanted to do a spell, but she just nodded and began by taking her quill and beginning to write down what the professor was saying about the transfiguration magic, and the building blocks of the magic. She was taking notes as the professor was speaking, making sure that she didn’t miss anything and then got down what was on the board behind the professor. With that the lesson was wrapped up and Winnie was able to pack up and leave the room.

The words that William dreading hearing in ever class were uttered by Professor Odegard soon after he arrived. Wands won’t be required today. He sighed deeply as he kept his wand in his pocket and instead took out a blank sheet of parchment and his quill and ink so he could take notes. He was starting to dislike Transfiguration which was a shame because he knew eventually the class would be interesting, he hoped he still retained some interest by that point. He listened to Professor Odegard as he gave them a lecture on the restrictions around Transfiguration. It felt like a natural progression of their previous lesson but that didn’t mean William would enjoy it, he could feel his hand starting to cramp from the excessive note taking. Once the lesson was over, William finished up his notes and packed them into his bag and made his way out of the classroom once they had been dismissed.

It was perhaps disappointing that they would still be going over theory today and not be doing spells. Fortunately, Sayuri actually didn't mind lectures. She found them calming and a little relaxing. Besides, she was firmly of the opinion that knowing the theory was vital in performing spells. Which is why she always took the time to read up on the spells they would be covering for the year. As the lecture began, she took careful notes of what they would be covering through the years. It was interesting and helpful as she now at least knew what to read up on every year. As the professor discussed regulations, she listened and jotted down notes. She was definitely curious about what it would take to master the transformation that comes with being animagi. It sounded like a lot of work that she wasn't sure she had the determination to dedicate herself to. Cutting off her thoughts regarding animagi, she diligently copied the writing on the board. As Professor Odegard dismissed the class, she packed up her notes neatly and left to go finish some of her homework in other classes.

Kanako wished she'd been given a heads up about transfiguration. It was boring. Mind-numbingly so. Theory just wasn't exciting to Kanako, though she supposed her brother loved it. He always did like boring things like history and such and such. Kanako barely paid attention, regretting even showing up. She perked up a bit at the mention of animagi - she remembered having a conversation with that older girl about that. But that was the extent of the excitement, and once over, Kanako happily left.

Sybil took her seat for the day’s lesson and was quickly greeted by Professor Odegard as he began the lesson. She was a little disappointed to not need her wand but she was sure there would be plenty of time for that later. Instead she made sure to get out her things to take notes and got to work as they went over different rules and terms they would need in the future. She made sure to take good notes so she’d be able to use them later. There was a lot to go over and her hand was a little sore by the end but she was excited to learn.

Esme wasn’t enjoying the theory heavy Transfiguration lessons but she was nervous to actually start trying to perform transfiguration so for the time being she was happy to continue getting lectures. She took what was becoming her regular seat and settled into it for a lecture on the restrictions of transfiguration, specifically restrictions placed on it by the ministry in the form of laws. She took notes as she followed along with the lecture, it was pretty long but she did find it interesting. It was good to know what was restricted for future reference. Once the lesson was over Esme packed up the notes she had made then made her way out of the classroom.
