The Sorting Ceremony

Ava was stood waiting to be sorted, surrounded by the rest of her fellow first years. They were all packed a little too close together for her liking and she could practically feel the boy behind hers breathe on her neck. This made her uncomfortable, she was already sweating in her new school robes and she could feel her pale face flushed red. She began to fidget, rubbing her palms against her shirt and biting her thumb nail. She could practically hear her mothers voice in her head, "Nasty habit, darling, please stop" it made her smile a little and she hit a sudden wave of misery as she realised she missed her parents, she'd been so nervous she hadn't thought of them all day. They'd be sat at their big oak dining table right now, having dinner, talking about their day, most likely about her, wondering how she was getting on. She knew they'd both been worried, she wasn't the best in social situations but that could've just been down to lack of experience more than anything. She knew she had to make an effort to make friends here to put her parents minds at ease, they didn't want her isolating herself as she so often did at home.
Please, lets just get this over with, she thought. She wanted nothing more than to be sorted and sitting comfortably at her new house table, ready to begin the feast.
The headmistress began reading out names, and it wasn't long before "Cleever, Ava" was called. Oh, thats me, she realised, stepping forward, willing herself not to blush, her face was pink enough with the heat.
She sat down upon the stool, trying to avoid the glares of the mass of students before her, and felt the sorting hat placed on her head. How does this work then, she thought, her parents had talked her through the process and how the sorting hat would be able to tell exactly where she belonged, but she wasn't sure what she was supposed to think of while the hat was on her head. Did she just sit there, was she supposed to talk to it.. with her mind? She had absolutely no clue which house she'd belong to. Her mother had been a Hufflepuff and her father a Ravenclaw, but she didn't consider herself particularly alike either of them, not in personality, they all had different interests, although they tried to take an interest in each others. I suppose I'll just wait for the verdict, she thought..

Al could barely contain his excitement as he waited for the sorting to begin. Today had just been mental, like something out of a dream. After finding out he was a wizard and would be attending this school, he'd tried to find out as much as he could about it, but he still felt like he'd barely even scraped the surface on Hogwarts and the Wizarding World. He could tell the students who came from magical families and backgrounds just by how comfortable they were in this setting and with everything that had happened so far, and the way they seemed to know what was going on. Then there were the people he suspected were like him, muggle-borns as he was told they were called, who seemed more nervous and unsure. Some people, like himself, were still staring around the Great Hall in awe at its grandeur, when the Headmistress began to talk and introduced the sorting hat.
This was it, the most important part of the day, the moment they'd all been waiting for! He looked around at the four house tables, the older students watching them, probably wishing the whole process would move along so they could start their feast. He himself was looking forward to the food, he'd been told it was quite something and he did love his grub, he was a growing boy, after all, as his mother often said!
Names were being read out and students took their seats at their house tables, and Al realised he hadn't actually done that much research on each of the houses. He didn't know where he wanted to go, though he had read the Sorting Hat would know better than him were he belonged anyway.
"Darcy, Alyus" echoed throughout the hall, and it took Al a moment to realise that it was his name that had been called, he was Alyus! He rarely ever heard his full name spoken as only his great grandfather actually used it, it was strange to hear.
He made his way towards the stool, giving the headmistress a toothy grin before sitting down, re-positioning his glasses on top of his nose, and having the hat placed on his head.

Penelope Klein felt confident as ever, she had her uniform tailored to perfection, she had her hair slicked up in a high bun, and most importantly she was finally at Hogwarts New Zealand. She felt right at home in the midst of her peers, surrounded be the entrance hall. Discreetly looking around, Penelope was scoping out the group for a potential acquaintance; the girl feeling particularity sociable after the long train ride.

Once the doors opened to the great hall, Penelope smiled casually. She was extremely excited about her sorting and couldn't wait to meet her roommates. Hopefully they had a good sense of fashion, and didn't want to constantly be left alone - a deadly silent room at all times would drive her crazy. Inching her way to the front of the clump, Penelope listened carefully to the Headmistress's introduction, along with the Sorting Hat's song. Nell couldn't wait for her turn up at the stool. Everyone's eyes would be on her as the biggest decision for the next seven years was about to be made.

Waiting for the letter 'K', Penelope was analyzing every student before her - watching the newly sorted student walk over to their table and sit down with the rest of the house members. Lo and behold, her name was called "Klein, Penelope". Gracefully and confidently, the brunette walked over to the hat; she sat down and waited for the decision to be made.

Jae-Sung was terrified as he entered the Great hall of his impressive new school. The train ride to school had thrown up an interesting surprise when he found his dance partner Amella had also received a letter from the school. It was a huge relief to the boy to have a familiar face with him, someone to hold his hand while the train carried them off to their new life, and if Amella was going too then perhaps he wouldn't have to give up the only thing that made him feel alive.

The school itself was terrifying, he didn't understand how those around him were so calm, some even seemed excited. The castle looked like something out of an old movie, and not one with a particularly happy ending. They were taken from the platform, through the grounds and into the castle. It wasn't long before they were being led through the Great hall, through a sea of loud students, some quieted down as they eyed the first years. Jae-Sung avoided making eye contact with any of them and instead focused on Amella, who had not let go of his hand since the train departed. One by one students were taken to be 'sorted' into a house. Jae-Sung watched the reactions curiously and before he knew it he was next. The boy was almost shaking from the nerves, Amella pulled him into a hug which made him feel a little better and he was able to drag himself to the stool and take his seat. "Please don't separate us," he mumbled quietly so only the hat could hear.

Brandy entered the Great Hall amongst the large cluster of first years, her eyes scanning the place, giving it the once over. It was old but grand, like everything else she'd seen of the castle so far, and a bit like her own home. The ceiling appeared not to be there, and instead it was as if they were looking straight up at the night sky, millions of stars glistening there. She had to admit it was pretty magical.
The Headmistress began to talk, introducing herself and welcoming them, and Brandy wished she'd move things along a little faster and get the sorting started. She looked around herself at her peers, some of them looking rather nervous, some so excited they were practically giddy. She wasn't really sure how she felt herself, she'd known it was coming, the past few years had been leading up to this and she was bored of sitting around her house constantly, being home schooled by her mother. It was no fun when her father was away at work, he was the only person that really understood her and could make her laugh. She couldn't really imaging being friends with any of these people, but maybe when she was sorted in to her house she'd find more people like herself. She'd never really had a friend, her parents friends would bring their children over when they came for dinner parties and the likes, but she'd never been very fond of any of them.
Brandy was pulled from her thoughts and the examination of her fellow pupils when the Headmistress announced that the sorting would begin. She began to call out names, and Brandy realised she'd probably have a while to wait before the V's would roll around, the joys of having a name at the end of the register!

Students were sorted one after the other and doted off to join their new house tables. Gryffjndors, Ravenclaws, Hufflepuffs, Slytherins.. her whole family had been Slytherins, although she had no idea how her mother had managed it, to Brandy she was more of a Ravenclaw, possessed more of the traits that were typical of one, but then again maybe she hadn't always been as much of a sad act as she now was.
"Valor, Brandy" reached her ears, and she immediately made for the stool, brushing her hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ear. Taking a seat, she felt the hat placed on her head, and had to remind herself to breathe properly as she waited in anticipation.

Corrine couldn't help but look around at everything as she followed the rest of the students into the castle. There was just so much to see, and if this school was anything like Hogwarts Scotland, where her sister attended, she knew it would be ages before she got to know it all. With a smile on her face, Corrine glanced towards the front of the room, having an inkling of what was going to happen. Still, it was amazing to watch the sorting hat sing. The eleven year clapped her hands, a delighted expression on her face when it had finished.

With her arms crossed tightly against her chest, Corrine waited quietly for her name to be called. She was too nervous to do more than simply listen to the excited chatter all around her even though she desperately wanted to join in. As her name was finally called, Corrine took a deep breath, dropped her hands, and marched onto the stage as her mother had told her she should. She settled onto the stool just as the hat was dropped onto her head, momentarily blocking the sight of the very full room.

Willian strolled slowly into the Great Hall, looking amazed at the sight of it. He hadn't met any students yet, and was slightly unclear what was going on. He admired a lot of things in the Great Hall, including the magic. Willian's eyes lit up like a child in a candy store. He paused for a moment to allow eveything to sink in because truth be told, the eleven year old had never seen or heard about a school where they would teach a bunch of children magic. After a while his name was finally called out, "Moran, Willian." and without hesitation, cause his legs started to get rather tired from all the standing around waiting to be put in a house, Will walked towards the stool. He could feel that all eyes where on him, and he had not the slightest idea of what to do. Was he suppose to wait until an old and ugly hat put him into one of those four houses? Because that was just ridiculous. Willian waited for the woman to put the old hat on his head. He really wanted it to be over so everyone wouldn't stare at him and he could eat something.

Austin didn't care for being shipped off to a new school, he wasn't exactly the biggest fan of his old school but it had been comfortable. Austin didn't like change. The letters that came for himself and his sister telling them that they were magical, Austin didn't react much, Autumn on the other hand was ecstatic and he just didn't see what was so exciting. Sure there would be so many more books he could read that he had never even dreamed of, but at the end of the day it was just another school. So who cared. Ever since they got on the train to make their way to the new school, Autumn had seemed determined to make Austin be social, he didn't want to be social, he had a book in his bag and he just wanted to sit and read it. People made him nervous, books were comfortable and relaxing.

Autumn dragged him into a carriage on the train, made him speak to strangers and had him sit down next to a girl he didn't know. He was thankful when the train ride was over, even if one of the girls on the train had caught his eye. The school itself was enormous and if he wasn't nervous before, he was now as they were lead into the castle and to the entrance to the Great hall where something called the 'sorting hat' was waiting for them. The pathway through the tables to the stool at the end of the hall seemed to stretch on forever. He stood nervously holding onto his sisters hand as he waited for their names to be called. Autumn went first and was sorted into Gryffindor, he didn't know what that meant, he didn't know if he would join her or not. Austin was the next name to be called and he nervously walked out of the crowd and took his placed on the stool.

Prosper waited in line with all the other first years for the Sorting to begin. He watched the old, pointy hat, become animated to sing a song. It wasn't like anything he had ever seen before. The creases of the rim formed the mouth which belowed out the Sorting Hat song. Prosper was apprehensive about putting the thing on his head since it had the ability to read his mind. What if it spilled all his secrets? Not that he had any big ones of course. *Shifty*

"Voltaire, Prosper."

The first year stepped forward and placed the hat on his head, holding his breath as he waited to hear which house he would spend the next 7 years in.

The excitement on Delphine's face was visible as she and the other children stood just outside the double oak doors leading inside the Great Hall. She has been in a good mood since the red head boarded the New Zealand express, waving goodbye to her parents and two younger siblings. Though, her other siblings had gone to school already in different parts of the world. Delphine's choice of the school near home was not her choosing, instead her parents picked it but she was still fine with it because it says that she'll be alone for quite sometime.

As the doors opened, they piled up in two straight lines and off they walked inside. Delphine smiled as she saw the hat, two of her older siblings are study at Hogwarts in Scotland and they mentioned about getting sorted and picked which house. Her older brother, who's a 7th year and graduating was sorted into Gryffindor while the next one was sorted into Ravenclaw. Although, she wasn't aiming for a specific house, she would like to end up in Gryffindor because of her brother's stories. Jean was the only person who understands all of them, they were trapped from a misery that they can only escape when all of them had become legal age.

As the list of people getting sorted already, the red head youngester heard her name next "Grimbald, Delphine!" The Headmistress called out to her. And she took a deep breath and released it as she walked in front and sat at a tall stool. Once the hat was on her head, she talk to it through her mind. Hat, do you think I belong somewhere deserving like Gryffindor? My brother said I have a heart of a Hufflepuff but no bravery like a Gryffindor because I tend to cowar when our parents are there. Please, do so pick wisely where I belong truly. It was now or never and she waited its answer and for a moment a flash of memory came to her when her parents found out that two of their children was never in Slytherin house, the house her parents came from. They were furious and almost banish them for good. Delphine held the side of the stool, scared out of her wits, she closed her eyes and relaxed.

The compound Klementos and the rest of his family lived on was grand and large, but looking at the Great Hall with his own two eyes, and having seen the rest of the castle on the way there, Klementos had no idea which was bigger. He noticed other Dragonslayer's dotted around the hall, cousins and distant relatives some of which didn't even notice him. That didn't surprise him, back at home he kept himself mostly with his elder siblings, Abrax and Elektra, and while Elektra had said she'd try and transfer in, Abrax would still be to old to come with him.

"Dragonslayer, Klementos."

His name was called out and with one last glance around the room in the hopes of spotting his sister, he made his way towards the stool, having unsuccessfully found her. He sat on the stool and watched as the room went dark as the brim covered his eyes. Without any idea what house he'd like to be in, he awaited the magical hat's decision.

The acoustics in the room were amazing, Missouri noted as she stepped into the great hall, smiling as her brother waved at her from the Hufflepuff table. He was a nerd, but finally seeing him inside the place he talked about so much, she understood why, he had a fair handful of friends surrounding him and that was a first for him, and hopefully the same would happen to her. She loved Marzen to pieces but then again, she couldn't spend several years being referred to as "Marzen's Sister," which is why she had to convince the sorting hat that she wasn't Hufflepuff material.

"Svajone, Missouri!"

She shakily stepped forward, careful not to make eye contact with the Hufflepuff table, especially not her brother as she sat down on the sorting stool and the hat was placed on her head. "Please, I love him but I cant stay with him for the rest of my life." she whispered. 12 years of nonstop living together was enough for her, she needed a break.

The only thing Maya could do to prevent her hands from trembling was to ball her fingers up into a fist and glue them firmly to her side. She tried to contain the feeling of a million hopping chocolate frogs in her stomach by taking deep breaths and humming softly to herself.
Walking towards the stool with all eyes on her, Maya felt helpless and alone, until her eyes unexpectedly caught sight of a cat. Locking eye contact for only a second, the pair of yellow eyes quickly disappeared under the robes of another first year who flashed her a smile.
'How strange' she thought, taking a seat on the stool, momentarily forgetting about everything but the flashing yellow orbs. The voice of the hat inside her head snapped Maya back into reality and her eyes closed to block out everyone else in the hall. The hat was very silent as it observed Maya's thoughts and feelings, trying to understand which environment would allow her maximum potential to arise, but her mind seemed to be distracted, filled with only the smiling stranger with the sleek cat.
Sighing, the sorting hat exclaimed for the whole hall to hear ".......!"

The sorting hat's song was so contagious that Millicent wished she could sing along. The blonde girl bet that Durmstrang didn't have anything that fancy. In her spot she wiggled about, excitement forcing her to move or she may explode into Milly-confetti all over the great hall. And how great it was! The sights and sounds were almost too much for the student - almost student - to take in. Up in the front, which she stood on her tippiest tip toes to see, was an old raggedy hat. The thing was to sort them, and Millicent couldn't help but hope that it sorted her somewhere that covered her true intentions. The only reason she'd been able to be in this school was because she portrayed to her parents that Slytherin was just as valuable for the dark arts as Durmstrang was. Otherwise they'd have never let her go. At the very least Milly thought she was clever enough for it.

After a few names it was time for the O's, Milly was almost always the first O. "Oakland, Millicent The girl nearly squealed. As she pranced to the stool her ultra-blonde tresses bounced up and down. Finally it was time. She had been so excited she'd almost knocked over the stool. Giggling slightly the girl steadied the wood and then sat herself down, back as straight as could be, chin forward and proud. She waited patiently for the hat to be placed on her head. This was the moment for any final request, but the girl remained silent. She knew that the hat knew best, and she was just excited to be there.

everything had been very different compared to everything at home. the landscape had been so diverse, the weather and even the people he encountered and had managed to nervously talk to. the surprises remained and the mexican native had been petrified, in awe of the glorious sight that was the castle that would be his school for seven years. the different statues, the colours of the four houses people wore -- one of those he would wear soon enough himself.

the great hall was probably the most magnificent room he ever entered. the magical high ceiling and the hovering candles left him speechles. barely able to follow the ceremony he too, was part of, instead too focussed on everything that was so new to him. even so distracted that he didn't hear the first time he was called forward for his own sorting.

"Lopez, Luciano!" a second time would hopefully do the trick. which it luckily did even though he almost ended up tripping over his own feet as he managed to get up on the stage in his enthusiasm. enthusiasm and energy were quickly replaced by nerves as soon as he sat down.

legs swinging in a nervous manner. softly gasping and feeling a shiver run up his spine as the soft material of the sorting head touched the black tousled hair he inheritated from the father he never met. feeling nauseous as the hat started to speak, talk with him and trying to figure out in what house the mexican belonged. merely wishing for an accepting place where he could express his thoughts, while befriending others and someplace apart from the school he could call home. hands clenching into fists, eyes pinched close as he awaited the hat's decision. almost as if it would be painful for it to decide where luciano belonged.

Braxton Combe sat in the great hall of Hogwarts, still in disbelief. He couldn't believe that he was there. He couldn't believe he had gotten that letter delivered by an owl. He couldn't believe that he was a wizard! He couldn't believe that he was sitting among many other kids as he watched them get called to the front of the hall one by one and have the sorting hat placed upon their heads. He couldn't believe there was a talking hat! Braxton eagerly awaited his turn, giving his best attempt to fight back the nerves that were covering him. This was all still so surreal to him. In fact, his mouth was wide open as he stared vacantly at the magical ceiling of the great hall. The splendor and awe of everything was too much for him to handle. It was like sensory overload.

He was so hypnotized that it took an elbow to the side from one of the other new students to break Braxton's trance. He winced in pain and his eyes darted all over the place as he realized that his name had been called. With one last nervous gulp, the young wizard collected himself and took a deep breath. "I got this," Brax thought silently to himself as walked to the front, sat on the stool, and had the sorting hat placed upon his head.

As Evren cautiously walked into the Great Hall, she marveled at the tall ceilings and beautiful architecture of her new home. Hundreds of students lined the long tables, all of their faces turned towards the group she came in with. She felt a little nervous as she saw the sorting hat was in front of everyone, she worried that something would go wrong and everyone would laugh at her. Few people went before her, her last name being Bates; as they called her name, she slowly pushed through the crowd. She walked to the hat and sat on the stool, twiddling her thumbs. "This is it, your big moment Evren!" She exclaimed inside her head. Once the hat was lowered on to her head, she stared up at it as far as her eyes would allow as she waited on the sorting into her house.

Maggie Applewhite was not exactly nervous about all of this, but that didn't mean that she wasn't slightly hesitant about what the outcome of this was going to be. Her siblings were in different houses, so she wasn't really picky on what she wanted. She didn't know if she wanted to be with them, or not, but she was sure she would be pretty happy anywhere. It was times like this that Maggie wished she had her sketch pad with her.

Her name was called and Maggie looked over to her siblings as she walked up to the stool. She was so excited to finally have her house. She couldn't wait.

Clara walked into the sorting ceremony and immediately looked on is awe as the students all gathered around a stool. Clara harboured a great admiration for history, magic and architecture. It all interested her greatly. She smiled happily as she quietly chatted to a soon-to-be student next to her. She'd seen her half sister around earlier, though the were brought up more as cousins and that would be how she would refer to her. Wynter and Oliver had disappeared into the crowd early on though and Clara had not been overly inclined to keep track of them. She didn't care terribly where they were and only hoped that Wynter was not getting herself into trouble. Oliver was okay on his own, but she always dreaded what Wynter was up to.

It was not long until Clara's name was called. Once she was done she would have to see where Wynter and Oliver were sorted. She had family in different houses, Gryffindor, Slytherin and Hufflepuff. She wasn't sure about Ravenclaw, but she didn't really care what house she ended up in, as she knew she would excel at any house. She would be writing a letter to her father tonight, detailing the entire ceremony and her house colours.

Wynter walked into the Great Hall and smiled at her brother. She, Clara and Oliver had shared a carriage on the way up but had split once they got to the lake crossing. She was curious to see what houses each of them would get, wondering if they would be separated or together. Wynter and Oliver were very different, but they got along well enough. Clara was a bit weird, but Wynter liked her. Wynter's mum had given her a few tips before they'd left the platform and told her that she could owl her if she ever needed to talk, but admittedly, Wynter was much happier away from them. She hated that they were constantly on her back about things and much preferred to be here than there. There was no chance she'd want to leave. However, all the deaths at the school and the fact that Alexia felt it was necessary to send her kids to the school to prove there weren't any problems, did not help with the woman's health. Wynter was sure she saw her mum double checking her luggage before they'd even left the platform.

"Mckenna, Wynter."

Hearing her name made Wynter realise that she'd missed both Clara and her brother's sorting. She cursed slightly under her breath, not sure where they were now, before making her way up to the stool. "Just let me know when you're done."

Although he truly looked forward to his sorting, Alfie was more apprehensive than he would acknowledge. It grew increasingly clear to him that the wizarding world was no egalitarian paradise; there was prejudice here as well, and he apparently was among those looked down upon. He took in the splendor of the castle and forced himself to repress the unease. "Pryse, Alfred." He approached the Sorting Hat without inhibiting his great eagerness.

Oliver was rather excited to be in the hall, with his sister and cousin, waiting for the hat to sort them. He had heard some things from his cousins, but it was still new to him. The hall was huge and the crowd was large - it was a tad suffocating, but the young boy could ignore it with the promise of being sorted and starting his school career. He waited patiently as names were called and students were sorted. When it finally came to his turn, he took careful strides up the stairs to the stool and sat down. When the hat was placed on his head, he settled his. nerves and waited in silence.

The Great Hall was just as the young girl imagined. She was finally here. The first of her siblings, the best! At least that is how Emerson saw it. She was the eldest, thus she was able to attend school first. She would learn wonderful and useful things in her classes as well as be the first of her siblings to legally be able to use magic when she reached of age. Finally the young impatient girl thought briefly.
Walking into the Great Hall she held her head up high. This was it. This was her moment. All eyes were on her. Finally She thought again, not once thinking about the entitlement she felt as a negative characteristic. After all, it was about time she got some recognition. Having a large family often pushed her under the table, not noticing all she had to offer, how amazing she would strive to be. This was different. This was Emerson alone, willing, able, and exciting to finally be sorted into the house that would start her journey, her adventure.
Upon hearing her name, Emerson walked confidently towards the stool and the sorting hat. No big deal. Just the start of my book She thought grinning. Emerson sat on the stool her legs dangling in the air. The start of my autobiography She thought as the hat was placed upon her head about to make it's final decision.

Sylvester walks into the great hall with the rest of the first years. Astonished at the grande sight in front of his eyes, he can't help but look like a buffoon with his jaw dropping. The excited first year stands ready in front of the rest of the students and staff, waiting for what happens next. He was well aware of the sorting process, but he was very nervous as to where he would be sorted! His father was a Gryffindor and his mother was a Ravenclaw when they went to the Hogwarts in the UK, so he was hopeful for at least one of those houses. However, he was simply excited to be here and knew he would be happy in any house the hat decided to sort him in.

Sylvester's mind was racing a hundred kilometers an hour when he heard his name called out. "Sylvester Buffone!" He walked up to stool with the hat, suddenly his mood switching from excited to madly nervous. He sat down and waited for the inevitable...

At last! The famous great hall's doors were about to be opened. Lycus along with all the unsorted youngsters were all lined up into several lines. The voice of an old man passed Lycus' ears, his voice was bold and loud. At once, the doors were magically opened and the students entered the room. The sound of people clapping filled the room and it irritated Lycus. Being born in a quiet family, Lycus hated anything noisy. The sound of people laughing or clapping or talking to each other loudly were noise pollution to the young boy. He looked at them in disgust and glanced at his side, finding a beautiful girl standing not too far from him. He quickly looked away and payed attention to what the professors have to say. One by one the students' names began to be called and each one of them got sorted to four different houses "Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin" he whispered to himself.

"LYCUS JIN-HOWARD"

Before he knew it, his name was called out loud making his heart jumped a little. None of the Jin Howard have ever talked that loud before, this is new to him. At once Lycus walked straight to the stool and sat as the professor placed a sorting hat on his head.
