The Sorting Ceremony

Trinity felt awkward and foolish in her uniform and robes. She sighed as she followed the others into the hall and stood close to the only friend she had, who thankfully she had made outside of magic school. She watched as one after another students were called up to have a strange looking hat placed on their heads. Trinity had not been told about this part and was more apprehensive than she thought she would ever be. She couldn't run out screaming blue bloody murder because every single student sitting at the tables had wands with them and could use them. The professors looking very serious and deadly terrifying to the small girl also had wands. She felt unsave and very insecure. This was a place of nightmares. Her name was called out and she simply blinked until Tony nudged her. She stepped forward and looked at the hat, not sure if she was to actually say anything to it but as she did not want to stay on the stool too long, she decided to just get the whole thing over and done with quickly.

She sat down and let the hat be placed on her head. Suddenly feeling like Dorothy from the wizard of oz and muttering over and over to herself with her eyes tightly closed.
"I don't believe in magic, I don't believe in magic" right at that very moment she could feel the first pangs of real hatred for her parents. They had abandoned her all of her 11 years to go about their ministerial duties which seemed ultimately more important than their child and now here she was, in a world she abhored being forced to attend a school that was going to teach her how to be dangerous. The world really was a strange place and Trinity knew that as soon as the hat started to speak, it was only going to get stranger.

"Well you better believe in Magic. I'm Magic. You're full of Magic. Right, and by the way - you're a GRYFFINDOR in denial."

As Francell walked into the great hall, he felt as if a great pressure was propelling him forward. He looked around to see groups of students at different tables. As he moved a little faster, he started to plot how he would manipulate his way into the social "in-crowd". By the time his name was called to be sorted, he had already formulated a plan. When the hat was placed on his head, he was calm with knowledge that he would be placed where he would be free to plan his social takeover in peace.

"SLYTHERIN!"

Cassi walked (unpurposely) gracefully into the big room. She didn't know the name, just the big room. She looked around and saw about hundreds of people were sitting, wearing cloaks. That's it? She thought that witches was supposed to dress like old witches? And wizards.. well, like old wizards! She began to think that this school wasn't such a disaster after all. In a fashion mode. But in food mode? This little girl whose dream was to marry a refrigerator, had to think about her stomach. Is Hogwarts' food good? she thought. She shrugged and just let them flow. She followed the other student, who walked to the front of the room. On the podium, stood a chair. And on the chair was a dirty black hat. She had to wear that? So not cute. But her 'acquaintances' were called one by one into the podium. She had to be fair. And that meant she had to put the black old hat onto her blond hair. And did she mention the hat SANG?!

One by one, her acquaintances walked to their selected dorms. Some are smiling, some are.. not smiling. Well, whatever the outcome is, she was ready. She didn't understand the whole 'dorm-ing' thing in this school, so she would be fine. Right?

"Messer, Cassiopeia!"

Oh, that's her! She began to worry. What if there's a bad dorm in the school? I mean, there are some mischievous looking people on the corner, are they on the bad dorm? she wondered. She shook her head and 'flew' to the podium. She meant walk. Unpurposely gracefully again. Didn't mean like that, her walking style was like that. She sat on the wooden chair and her ice blue eyes began to wandered around the hall--oh, now she calls them hall!--. The other students seem nice, except for the 'corner people'. A professor then placed the black hat on her head and she began to clear her mind so that the hat can read her personality easily--was that even connected, dear?--. She closed her eyes, hid her two blue pearls. And when she opened them again, she heard the hat screamed from above her head. It screamed her new dorm, her home for the next seven years. And it was...

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

Tori walked into the big room with the rest of the students. The small girl looked around, everyone seemed to have an excited look on their faces, the opposite to her bored expression. She followed the big group she had entered with up to the front and they all gathered around a stool and a hat.

Well this looks interesting(!)

She thought sarcastically. Tori watched as the first name was mentioned, almost laughing at the expression on the childs face. A look of shock crossed her face briefly when the tattered hat spoke but quickly returned to the previous bored look. Eventually her name was called.

"Sharpe, Victoria."

Tori winced at the name 'Victoria', she had always hated the girlyness and poshness of it and felt like hitting anyone that called her that, excusing her parents of course. The brunette made her way up to the stool and sat on it. The hat fell over her eyes and she sat in darkness just waiting for the hat's verdict. Just do your thang hat thingy.

"SLYTHERIN!"

Carter followed the big group of children, her age, into the giant room. Her face showed signs of fear, shock and wonder as the emotions flickered through her. She continued to follow the soon to be students to the front of the hall and watched as, one by one, they were picked out and placed under the hat. She had jumped when it first spoke, but then rememinded herself she was in a school for magic. This is probably normal for this place.

"Taylor, Carter"

As Carter made her way up to the stool where the hat was placed she couldn't help but think about how her name backwards sounded better to her than her name frontwards. She sat on the stool and braced herself and closed her eyes as she felt the hat slip onto her head. Hello mr hat. Or mrs hat, maybe miss if you're not married. Sorry, I'm a little nervouse, could you possibly be quick if it's no to much trouble.

"My gender would be male, thank you, but I have no sex. You'll clearly have a lot to learn, but you'll still fit in in RAVENCLAW!"

Zeke walked into the hall, right in the middle of the group. He looked around as they entered, not at the magnificent room, nut the students in it. Specifically the girls. He grinned a lopsided, yet charming grin and continued forwards, happy with his choice within the school. He had noticed some of the girls he had met already and had managed to hide from Rose, his current girl, succesfully. When people began to speak, Zeke zoned out.

"Newton, Ezekiel"

Zeke was pulled back into the real world and walked up to the stool. He sat down and managed to keep his grinn on his face, even though he felt nervous. Y'alright hat? Do me a favour and put me in the house with all the best girls woud you? I'll love you forever if you do. Even his thoughts were spoken in a jokey manner.

"You're a strange one, but something tells me you'll do well in HUFFLEPUFF!"

Skyle walked into the great all with all the other first years. She was very anxious, she hadn't slept at all the night before. She watched as the kids before her had their names called to be sorted. Finally, after what seemed like a life time, her name was called.

"Darnelle, Skyle." She walked to the stool and felt the hat placed on her head. 'Ravenclaw.' she thought to herself. 'Please be Ravenclaw.'

"Yes, you definitely belong in RAVENCLAW!"

Gilfred watched as everyone was getting sorted before him. It seemed to take forever. He just wanted it to be over and done with. Then, his name was called out and Gilfred's heart skipped a beat. He looked around slowly, examining the rest of the students. He walked slowly up to the three legged stool. He sat down, feeling more and more nervous as the seconds ticked by. He wanted it to be over quickly. 'Please let this be over quickly', it was all he could think of as he waited for the hat to make it's decision.

"You're wise beyond your yearse and will definitely find many friends in RAVENCLAW!"

As she climed the stairs up, up to the grate hall, Taloola could hear her heart beat in her ears. She was among a mass of children, all of whom were merily chatting and laughing with their already made friendship groups.
Although the mass of people, Taloola felt alone. Alone, and scared. She had no idea what the grate hall would be like, what was going to happen, anything. All she knew was that they were going to be sorted into houses. And that there was going to be a feast! That she looked forward to, she had been to nervus to eat breakfast that morning, and had hardly any lunch, and her stomach churned. She wasn't sure weather it was hunger or nerves. "Be brave" she muttered to herself.
The doors swung open, and Taloola felt herself go white as paper. She shook her head and followed the others in. This place was amazing! Floting candles! An indoor sky in the celing! She knew it would be magic, but this was fantastic. She felt a gleaming smile spread from cheek to cheek, and she huried in. It was as if seeing this Magic, and in a sense knowing that it was good, got rid of her fears and aprehension!
The crowd gathered around at the end of the hall, by where the teachers sat. "A hat...?" Taloola thought!

"Wow. You really don't fit to any mold, do you? In that case - HUFFLEPUFF!"

Darian took a breath to quell his stomach. It have taken a liking to doing backflips at the moment. He looked around at the great hall and it was easy for him to see why they called to the great hall. The air was scented with food, making his stomach feel even worse. After a few moment his name was called.

"Dinu, Darian." He stepped forward and took spot beneath the worn hat. He could feel power deep in it as it was place on his head. In his head he let his thoughts wonder. 'Place me where you will. I know I can trust your magic.'

"How does GRYFFINDOR sound?"

Kala took a deep breath. The air smelled wonderful and she couldn't wait to sit down. Her nerves where so bad that every time she stepped she could feel her whole body sway. She smiled when she saw a few of her new friends get sorted. Finally her name was called.

"Kelly, Kala." She laughed to herself as she stepped forward. She never realized she had two first names. When she sat she tried to focused on the house she wanted, nearly screaming it in her head. 'RAVENCLAW! I HOPE YOU CAN HEAR THIS! RAVENCLAW PLEASE DON'T BE DEAF!.'

"PLEASE DON'T BE RUDE! You're clearly not the brightest Ravenclaw around. That's right. RAVENCLAW!"

Drusilla walked into the Great Hall unable to see over the tall boy infront of her. All she could do was look up at the majestic ceiling in wonder at the thosands of candles that floated. It was just like the photos her mother had shown her. As names where called out and people cleared she finaly got the opertunity to take in the room. At first she was a tad shocked at the number of kids seated. Growing up with only family members and a few classmates she was a tad stunned, but still excited at the prospect of finding someone she could truly confide in.

After what seemed like ages her name was called by a proffessor. It was her turn. Taking a deep breath she walked forward, butterflys buzzing in her stomac. This was what she had been waiting for for so long.

Biting her lip and taking a seat she awaited the hats decision.

"SLYTHERIN!"

Jude waited in the Great Hall with the other unsorted students, practically tingling with excitement and a huge grin on his face. He couldn't wait to be sorted. He glanced around at all the other students, wondering if there were any like him. Muggle-borns. That was the word, wasn't it? He thought with a slight frown. The word sounded weird to him, and he wondered why they were called that, and not all just 'human'.

"Nicholason, Jude."

Jude heard his name being called and immediately shot up to where the sorting hat was. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw. He thought in his head. He didn't exactly mind what house he was placed in, but he had heard the Slytherins were nasty. Seating himself on the stool, Jude felt the Sorting Hat be placed on his head, then waited patiently for it's decision.

"Already dislike Slytherins. You're a natural GRYFFINDOR!"

Matt walked down the great hall watching a bunch of other students aready sorted. Matt was a bit nervous but he knew the hat will put him in right house. They yelled Matt , Green !! Matt's heart beated like a rock hitting a hard surface Matt walked up sat on stool and Matt felt the professor gently put the hat on Matt's head. Matt was hoping hes wasn't going to be slytherin. And he was shaking like never before as if he was in really cold weather rubbing his arms and everything students started laughing and Matt was embarresed. So Matt sat they're and waited for decision he never felt so nervous in his life but he hoped he was in griffindor he mumbled griffindor , griffindor, griffindor....

"Gryffindor? Are you quite sure? You could be a great Hufflepuff. No? Alright, then. GRYFFINDOR!"

In a sea of heads, Clarice Jane Herrington peered through the shoulders of her peers, her cognac coloured eyes landed on a singing hat. Wow, she thought, that isn't something you see everyday. Of course she had seen magic in use before, she was after all her father's daughter and her older brother's, little sister but never had she seen a talking hat in her father's shop. How amazing that would be, she thought, in awe of such magic being showed before her.

Of course by the end of the 'A' students it wore off and Clara fell bored, so she looked to Benson Thacker, her only friend so far. She grinned at him as she pulled back her bushy hair out of her face with aggravation. How she detested having her hair let down. However, these futile thoughts dripped out of her mind as she heard a familiar name being called.

"Herrington, Clarice." The young girl smiled eagerly, not feeling any anxiety. It was only going to change the rest of her life right? She stepped clumsily to the seat after offering one last glance to her friend, hoping that they would both be in the same house because it would give them more chances to see each other.

Taking a seat, she felt the Sorting Hat being placed on her head and she glanced up, only seeing the tattered rim of the speaking hat.Gryffindor. Gryffindor. Gryffindor! she sang mentally, before looking straight ahead, seeing table of the house she felt she was destined to be in. But it was up to the Sorting Hat...

"Another one for GRYFFINDOR!"

Osiris heard his name called. He immediately turned a ghostly white. Ever since he had been in New Zealand this was the moment he was waiting for. He couldn't wait to be sorted, but being up in front of everyone made him pretty nervous...
He slowly walked towards the stool with the Sorting Hat. The teacher who had called him up put the hat on his head; by the Osiris was trembling...

"Your future lies in GRYFFINDOR!"

Adam watched impatiently as all the people before him were called. He really just wanted this done and over with. Soon he saw a few of his friend's go up and his cousin Darian. He watched wondering what it would feel like when he was put on the spot.
Simons, Adam. Adam heard his name and he smoothly walked up ignoring the butterfly's lingering in his stomach. He sat on the warm stool and noticed all the other student's and the smell of food. The hat fit his head snugly and he found he was bored waiting, He began singing the phantom of the opera untill he came across the inside your mind part. 'Crud your in my mind arn't you? Slytherin, please let it be Slytherin, Sly-ther-in please, nice good, kind hat?'

"Yes, alright. SLYTHERIN!"

Adam walked into The Great Hall and stood flabbergasted at the site of it. It was everything he had every imagined, and more. Candles were floating in the air, tables with fried chicken, cakes and every food he could think of was there. "Whoa," he said, short of breath.

"Collinswood, Adam," he heard a booming voice say.

Yikes. This was the moment of truth. He ha temporary forgotten why he was here. The sorting ceremony. He walked up slowly to the hat. Beeds of sweat rolled down his face as the hat was placed on the head....

"Gryffindor!"

Maria stepped confidently into the Great Hall, with a toss of her perfectly curled hair. Finally, she had made it to Hogwarts! A school of magic, where her brother couldn't do a thing against her, beyond writing her letters, and those were hardly going to spill soda all over her "accidentally". She grinned widely, unable to cover a gasp of delight when she saw the legendary ceiling, and the candles floating everywhere. Glorious! Magic was everything she had ever dreamed it was, only so much more! She tugged slightly selfconsciously at the uniform she really thought was hideously drab - though it would have to do - and breathed in deeply, exhilirated by the feeling of simply being here, for real, at this amazing, magical place! It was everything she had ever dreamed of and more.

Anxiety squirmed in her stomach though, when they began calling off names. Which house would she be in? Her parents wanted her so desperately to follow in their footsteps and take one of their houses, and to be honest, Maria didn't like the sound of the other two houses anyway. She didn't like Hufflepuff so much - it sounded like too much work being nice to everyone, and well... working hard. Maria didn't like the sound of anything to do with work - yuck! Her dad's old house sounded much better - lions were infinitely cooler than badgers, and what kind of loser wanted to be represented by yellow and black, anyway? You'd look like a bee, gross. Maria was so caught up in her tangled thoughts about which house was what and why, that she almost missed her name being called

"Madison, Maria."

Not having realised they had reached the M-s, Maria groaned when her name caused the same problem it had at her old school. Maria would never stop hating how her last name sounded just like another first name. She couldn't wait to get married and change it. Why her mother had taken it when she married her dad, Maria would never know.

BUT NOW WAS NOT THE TIME TO THINK OF THIS! Almost tripping over in her hurry, Maria walked determinedly over to the hat, avoiding cringing at the thought of such an ugly thing touching her head. She sat down in the stool, relieved that the hat didn't cover her whole face like it had for some people. That last minute decision to wear a headband was a lifesaver, and she smiled slightly.
'Alright hat.' Maria thought, hands fiddling with her skirt in a subconscious nervous habit, as she suddenly realised how many people were staring at her. 'Sort me.'

"It may shock you - but I see you most in HUFFLEPUFF!"

Malcom was standing in line, more nervous than he had ever been before. Not only was this magic, but it was real, and it was his life now! Everything in the hall even looked magical, right down to the older students sitting at the tables. He was so lost in thought that he didn't realise how far along the names had gotten until his was called.

"Harrison, Malcom."

He scuttled over to the stool nervously, and the hat was placed on his head, almost covering his nose. Malcom wondered what this hat thing was supposed to do - he really should have found out more before coming to this school.

"Your desire to learn points you to the house of RAVENCLAW!"

Jessye confidently practically flew into the room she was sick of people acting like she didn't exist. She smiled boldly then skipped while spinning to her seat. Her wide sparkly eye's wandered over the crowd and she began to wave to every one. But then her mind wandered and she slowly drifted to her seat eye’s, mind and her pale, delicate, pretty body was blank not showing any sign’s of anything being in there. Just a empty body sitting there no soul what so ever.

“Marino, Jessye!”

And at the sound of her name she glided to the stair’s as if she was only a shy lonely spirit like she had no body. Jessye almost tripped but caught her balance and all of a sudden the crazy happy her came back as she bounded up the stair’s and over to the hat.

"Your kindness will get you far in HUFFLEPUFF!"

Olivia walked into the room sticking her tongue out at people she didn't like and giving nods to people she did. She took a seat and concentrated on what every one was saying.

"McLean, Olivia!" was called out.

So she stood up and walked to the hat. 'Rvenclaw oh I beg of you put me in raven claw!' she wined in her head.

"Ravenclaw? Alright, sure. RAVENCLAW!"

Beau had found out about Hogwarts only a week ago. He was reluctant to leave his little sisters alone in Dunedin (although of course, his parents were there), but he was always up for a challenge, so was looking forward to this new school promising exciting things. His mother had told him once or twice throughout his childhood that she was a squib, and that he would understand what that meant someday. He figured it had something to do with this magical world.

He'd chatted away to anyone who looked friendly or scared on the train, but was silenced in awe of the Great Hall when he entered it. Woah! This place was awesome! He listened and laughed away to himself as the mangy old hat on the stool sang and other students took their turn on the tiny seat. When they called "Karhunlappi, Beaumont," he grinned, wondering where he'd fit into this grand scheme of things. He walked on his solid legs to the front of the room and sat on the stool, hoping it wouldn't break, it looked so delicate. The hat was placed on his head and started talking to him! "Woah! Hey!" he tried to slow the thing down and stop it getting inside his brain. "Dude, put me somewhere fun."

"I think you'll have plenty of fun in HUFFLEPUFF!"

Lance breathed in and out slowly, just like his mother had told him to. According to his mum it would let more oxygen enter his brain and thus calm his nerves. Smoothing the front of his new robes, he stood in the line, as nervous as everyone, and as jumpy as everyone. A week before he set off for Hogwarts Lance's mother had told him about the houses and such, so Lance wondered which house would he be put in? He had watched the new Headmaster Nicolas King glare coldly towards the Slytherin Table, thus he inferred that most of the Slytherins were considered bullies. Lance had spent most of his time in Muggle School going against bullies, so he sure didn't want to join their lot. Ravenclaw was known to be the brainy bunch, but somehow he knew he wouldn't fit in. Yeah, he passed his tests in Muggle School with above average marks, but Lance knew that he wouldn't belong there. Next was Hufflepuff, an average bunch that didn't quite fit in with the rest, but were also known as the hardworking bunch. Oh well, Lance was NEVER hardworking. His mother had always wondered how he got past his exams, when he had never opened a book in his muggle school life?

Last but not least, Gryffindor. The brave, the courageous, the loyal. Now, that was the house he wanted to be in, the house that was to him, the greatest among all four of them. When the man had shouted his name "Jefferson, Lance!" Lance had walked forward in a casual stride, though he managed to muster some form of dignity in it. Sitting down on the stool, he put the old and rugged hat on him. It had a funny feel to it, and he had watched the hat speak as it sat on the heads of others, so he knew it was different. But then, there was that feeling, as if wearing the hat had made your mind open up, as if something was going to probe your mind.

"You could do quite well in Hufflepuff, but I'll give you what you want. RAVENCLAW!"

He went through the names, soon it was only me and some kid with red hair. finally the headmaster said, "Waldorf, Blair." I walked up, and jammed the hat on my head.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Note: Roleplay in the third-person using "she" and "her" instead of "I" and "my". :)
