History: Maria was born the second of three children, in a relatively happy, normal family. The first five years of her life were exceedingly ordinary, with friends and learning and fun. Maria's older sister fell ill though, and passed away when Maria was five. Maria's parents refused to tell the younger children what had happened at first, and Maria and Richard both assumed that Vanessa had simply left because she hated them. Even after their parents told the truth, Richard never stopped blaming Maria, and began taking out his anger and frustration on his older sister, misbehaviour their parents turned a blind eye to. Maria, meanwhile, was growing to resent her mother as well, for being the one behind the lie about Vanessa's death, and by the time she left for Hogwarts the strife in their family had grown unbearable. After so long under so much pressure, by the time Maria arrived at Hogwarts she was a time bomb, and being sorted into Hufflepuff set everything off. She loathed the thought of being in the same house as her mother and lashed out in every direction she could, a violent first year culminating in her throwing one of her roommates down a flight of stairs. Maria's struggles only worsened when her brother followed her to Hogwarts the next year and she lived out her time at school in misery, filled with pain and fury with no outlets at all. As soon as she graduated, Maria had made up her mind never to see her family again. She did a clean break, moving to Australia and severing contact with everyone she knew in New Zealand. Finally free but with no direction in mind, Maria finally sought therapy and began to deal with her problems, a process which changed her life. She quickly realised this was what she wanted to dedicate her life to; helping other people with the pain in their lives. While continuing with her therapy, Maria began studying again, eventually accomplishing a Master's degree in Counseling at the University of Notre Dame in Sydney. She chose to specialise in youth counseling, and began working with children in foster care, work that Maria quickly discovered her heart was much too soft for. There were dozens of children Maria ached to take home and give better lives to, but eventually the need became too much, when she met two children who reminded her so much of herself. After a lot of discussion and planning, Maria adopted her first two children, Charlie and Emily. Becoming a mother to children who so desperately needed one felt like the last step in closing the wounds from her own youth, and Maria devoted herself to her family, feeling a peace she hadn't known before. After a couple of years, and many discussions with her children, Maria adopted a son as well, Finn, and at that point she felt her family was complete. Her oldest child was approaching Hogwarts age though, and after weighing the different options, Maria chose to face the fears she had run from so long ago and return to New Zealand, finding absolution in a counseling job at the school she had once hated so much. Settling into her new job and her new home, Maria slowly began to feel settled again, but it wasn't long before her life would be shaken up once more. After the death of one of her clients' mother, Maria faced a difficult decision that she didn't hesitate on for a moment, and welcomed Odette to her family.
